The first question regarding Paly's and Warriors. If there's a good balanced group, yes, they would probably choose a warrior over a paladin for tanking. On the server I play on though, tanks are a commodity so any should be able to find a group.

As far as agro goes, Paly's have stuns, Warriors have hate discs. I suspect that holding agro better would depend on the mob, the group make up and the skill of the player.

Depths of Dark Hollow had some pretty revolutionary content for EQ. Two biggies are the Monster Missions - a group enters an instanced zone and they all become monsters that complete a mission. Since you step right out of your character there are no requirements on level or class of group. Most of them can be completed quickly, they offer up decent xp (without a death penelty) and ok rewards.

They also introduced Shrouds, similar to the Monster Missions, the shrouds allow you to become a different class/race of monster. You talk to the shroud NPC and pick a class and level that you may need for a group. I've very little xp with this, but would be interested to hear how far people have progressed with shrouds and if they are a sufficient subsitute in a regular xp grind group.

DoDH also provided some new zones - most high level, some new quests, spells, gear and a new method to research high level spells.

Well honestly its more about you

do you like the fact of having nice heavy armour and being able to cast spells such as heal or so or the other fact of always being wanted into group as a tank and being able to equipt any weapon in the game and at lvl 13 having duel weild so which ever one you like better is only up to you because most of the classes in everquest are equal until the owner makes a differnce

like some of the downsides of a warrior is there no magic no healing yourself so you cant really get nasty with an certain mob unless you have a cleric or druid buffing you up

and some downsides of paladins is theres no duel weild your not as strong as a warrior and its harder for a paladin to get into a good group then a warrior

thats how it was on my server

me I would have go with a DarkElf ShadowKnight or a Vah Shir Beastlord

but out of those two..id have to say paladin better for a main I think

To start with a paladin will be better able to solo with.
However now that you can bind wounds up to 70 percent, and can easily buy heal potions in POK, a warrior can solo.
Once you get to higher levels, no one can quite tank as well as a warrior at least that is the previous "general consensus".

Keep in mind thatTank classes are very gear dependent, then decide what class you want to play. It is after all the player that makes the character. Play well and you will be in demand.

Decisions, decisions. Like Froglokpaladin said it's up to you and what's going to make you happy. If you're really unsure you might want to try out both and see which one you're spending more time on. If you're new to EQ I would recommend against chosing a tank as your first character. Their equipment and grouping demands can be very trying. But if that's what you really WANT to play then you should just be aware of some of the problems you may encounter.

Paladins: As for grouping, I think paladins and warriors have equal opportunities for groups. From my experience as a paladin there are some situations that paladins may get chosen over a warrior:

- Ability to group heal and heal over time. Most often asked to tank for groups with a druid or shaman as the main healer since I can provide backup.

- Difficult group content that may require a backup rezzer. Though many classes now get this as an AA so I don't see this as much at higher levels, I was chosen many times over a warrior in my 40-50s for this, again especially if the main healer was a druid or shaman. LDoNs and basic dungeon crawls come to mind.

- Fighting in areas with many casters. My stuns can interrupt casters and prevent gating. I watched many warrior friends lose out to paladins in BoT groups (level 62-65) because of this ability.

Warriors: As for warriors there are many times when they will be chosen over a paladin.

- Difficult content with high hit point mobs. Warriors have the discs to maintain long fights and take less damage.

- Higher dps needed. Weaker dps groups will chose a warrior. With duel wield and crits they can do much more damage than a paladin.

- Plenty of healing available. A group with a cleric and a druid or shaman will pick a warrior. They will have no trouble healing the group and will benefit more from the added dps and mitigation abilities of a warrior.

- Raid content. Warriors will be chosen over paladins and sks for many raid targets. Especially mobs with mana draining AEs or huge hits. Paladins/SKs will tank trash and fill the role of rampage tanks.

There's many more I didn't think of. Personally, I haven't been passed over for a warrior very often and I would say that most of my warrior friends haven't been passed over for a paladin or sk either. The most important thing you can do is establish a good reputation as a well geared and capable tank and stick with content that is within your ability. The more people that know you and what you are capable of, the more group offers you will get. No one likes to take chances with the tank and many tanks try to get into zones and tank areas that are above their gear and ability.

Much more frustrating than finding a group is the struggles you will go through with gear. You will watch your non-tank friends move into zones that you simply cannot tank in. This is not a big deal unless you are starting the game with a few close friends or family members. But it can be very frustrating! Getting into a good family guild will make this easier and help you keep pace with others.

As for the new expansion. There's a wealth of information in the Forums here. Do a search for the specific questions you have and you'll find more than enough reading material for all those boring lunch hours.

In groups I always prefer a Paladin for Stuns and group heals.

Warriors I prefer as a raid target tank.

I prefer a warrior for groups(well really I like a Zerker =p)....better DPS=faster EXP.

Raid wise Knights are trash tanks(still a very important job) but you wont be on the MT tranking rotation(unless you are doing something trivial or a special encounter mob)
