howdy.....new to the boards....
I havent played Eq for a few years now...
Im thinking about picking it up again.....
when I played , a long time ago..
It was the only thing out there.(and it was good)
Now, there are so many new games out there.
what do you think of eq 1 VS eq 2?
Ive heard a few conflicting things..
one is, Eq 1 is re-vamped....and strong .less crowded.
others say its slowly loosing members and my shut down, from all of the pull from the other new games.
IF its worth it to jump back in....
Im lookn forward to it.....
I guess what Im asking is,
has Eq 1 cept up to speed with the Jones?
Ive seen Eq 2,The graphics were pretty cool.
just wondering.

EQ 2 is a very kiddish version of EQ IMO.
The only people who say EQ is dieing are those who play other games in hopes people will join their dieing game. EQ is alive and strong and actually growing. EQ survived when WoW and EQ2 came out and it will survive through the others.
EQ is an old game which means most of the game is higher end at this point. A new player can still join and be succesful but it will be harder than before.
The graphics aren't great but playabilty and content > graphics IMO

Not sure how one defines a game 'dying', but EQ1's server populations have most certainly reduced significantly. That's a simple fact. We're back down now to pre-merge numbers on servers now, and it doesn't seem that this trend will reverse any time soon. Perhaps we can look forward to another server merge. ;) Maybe we'll all be rendered down into one server eventually. Tarew-zek-nameless-druzzil-xev-tunare-bayle is OPEN! WOOT!
There are myriad reasons for this decline in EQ's population, and they have all been beaten to death, into undeath, back to life, and then back to death again. Suffice to say that SoE will do anything it can to keep accounts as long as it costs them absolutely no money. SoE won't lower the monthly fee. In fact they raised it...after cutting their overhead tremendously by slashing bandwitdth costs with the closing of half the game servers. Their ideas to keep players so far include VETERAN REWARDS...*snicker* and...well, that's sort of it. Everything else they offer costs money. SoE gives no real or concrete appreciation for loyalty, only pixels and data that are free. Not the best method to make customers happy, but it's the most cost-effective way and it seems to work on fanbois. Thus, populations keep falling and DoD is the poorest-selling expansion to date.
The rabid fanbois will howl that EQ is doing better than ever and it will never die. The bitter cynics will laugh at them and say EQ will be dead within a year. Do I think EQ will 'fold' completely? Highly doubtful. Do I think it will continue to dwindle in population? Definitely, though I do believe it will eventually reach a sort of stable rate of lost/gained accounts. Some players return after trying other games and finding they do not like them. Others do prefer WoW, etc. and do not return. Still others get sick and tired of MMORPGs in general and actually try to focus on RL instead of a game world. Yes, it's hard to imagine I know. I personally find RL to be a terrible curse that I must endure in order to continue playing various computer games.
My HOPE (and the reason I still play EQ) is that SoE will eventually figure out that most EQ players are very tired of spending money on expansions and 'value added' features, while subscription rates keep going up, customer service is nonexistent, and EQ is not the only game in town anymore. There are simply too many other games out now to choose from, with more coming. Dungeons and Dragons Online is about to go gold. Following closely will be Middle Earth Online, Conan: Age of Hyboria, Neverwinter Nights 2, and a host of others. I can tell you as a Dungeons and Dragons Online beta tester that Everquest will be in very serious trouble indeed if they don't learn to actually take care of customers instead of simply draining them of funds and then shrugging nonchalantly as server populations continue to fall. My greatest fear is that this cavalier attitude will eventually lead to the game's utter stagnation--if not true death--as SoE figures they've gotten as much money out of EQ as they can, so it's time to close up shop except to rake in the monthly fees from the few remaining die-hard fans.
I don't believe that will happen, in truth. I hope it won't anyway. I hope that SoE will eventually start making real, measurable improvements to the game, like revamping the countless old zones that still have graphics from 1999. They've revamped what...three? They were supposed to revamp them all with the release of the new graphics engine. I do believe that offering huge packages like EQ Titanium are a good idea, but reducing monthly fees or giving free months to veteran players would be even better. They're offering a free month to those returning, which is also a good thing. On the other hand, wasting time with something like EQplayers, which costs even more money, is not.
