EQ capable laptopFollow

Sorry in advance if this is not the right forum, I think it is close though since it has to do with EQ...

Im currently a High School senior and am going to be going off to college soon and my parents are saying they will buy me a laptop. Now i know laptops are not as powerful as desktops are, but I thought i would try to make the most of it for under $2k. I've seen Alienware offering their area 51 series and I have been intrigued. It seems I can get a quite potent laptop with an nVidia 6800 go gfx card and 1 gb ram for under $1800. I want to know your opinion as to wether (sp?) this will be sufficient. I know the computer (desktop) i have currently is not that nice, but somehow laptops are always crappier than desktops (or so it seems to me).

Dont know if this link will work but here is what im thinking....

Any commentary or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, also think that this comp has to last me 4 years, till i finish with college.....

For Christmas, I got my wife a Dell Inspiron 6000 and it works great. To save a bit of cash, I used the small business site on Dell; main thing is you don't get charged for the useless software they bundle into the home PC's. Then I dropped the HD down in size, but increased the video card (check the Sony site for compatible cards once you get it down to a few choices) and made sure that the mother board could take more than came from the factory; a common trick is to use multiple mem-sticks to give you the listed memory, so when you go to add, you realize you have to remove memory in the process. Finally, I waited until Dell had a discount offer; I got 10% off and free overnight shipping just after Thanksgiving. I have a co-worker who got a kick-*** Alienware system, but that was when they first came out and now that they are popular, they seem to be a bit pricey, IMHO.

A final point to consider, while laptops are typically slower that PC's, they still walk around with you, and after a bit you could always get yourself a flat screen monitor to make your gaming a bit more comfortable, if you find the images a problem.

I use a Sony Vaio and it copes with EQ fine. Main thing to stick out for is a decent graphics card and 1Gb of RAM. It is a bit old now and has the ATI Mobility radeon 9700 but that seems quite adequate. New machines probably do far better.

I've used my GF's Vaio and my IBM Thinkpad from work when I travel. Even though both have 512mb ram and the default video cards both can run eq. With both had to adjust the settings and use the old models but it works. Like others have already stated, 1gb of ram and a good video card and you should be fine. As far as the Alienware goes, its a bit expensive but I have a friend who has one and it puts many pc's to shame.

Alienware systems are great but a large chuck of the price is the name and case design. They are great systems but unless you have the money to throw around I would advise against it. Also EQ system req's are abit old and even though a system will run EQ it won't run alot of the new and upcoming software.

Pricewatch. Great website for computers and electronics in general.

Xtreme Notebooks is one of the sites on Pricewatch. You can customize your own system and can get a 2.5 - 3.0 pent 4 well equipped in the 2K range (give or take).

Keep in mind that upgrading a laptop can get very expensive. Make sure you get something that is going to keep up for awhile. I suggest at least 1 gig of ram and a video card with 256mb (I prefer Radeon but thats just me).

The hard drive isn't that big of a deal as that's probably the easiest part of a laptop to upgrade as your needs change. I suggest 1oo gig at 7200RPM. 10,000RMP drives are great for gaming but can be hard to find and a little expensive.

Edit: Almost forgot, get yourself a USB mouse (rollers and touchpads suck IMO) and a solid case. Dropping a brand new notebook sucks.

My son is looking to buy a laptop for school that can play EQ also. but he does not have 2k to spend. Dell has an EPS system for $900 that has Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 900. Any ideas how this graphics card stacks up? I am thinking with 1 gig it should run EQ ok but not great?

integrated grafics cards are only good for 2D grafics, they will NOT handel EQ, i can guarantee that

I run EQ on my Dell laptop with integrated Intel video and EQ runs (and only 512 ram). I have most of the old models on and a lot of visual crap turned down, but I can box with it.

My laptop also has integrated graphics, it runs EQ just fine.

I'm been using a Dell Inspiron 700m as my primary EQ device for the past 6 months and it's been working fine for me. It has a 1.7G Centrino processor, 2 GB of ram and Intel's integrated video. (I think the current model is more powerful.) For me, the main limitation I've found is the screen size. I have my resolution set for 1280 x 800. Also, using a touchpad instead of a mouse takes a little getting used to.

I dont believe SOE supports eq on laptops. driver support for the vid card can be sketchy over upgrades. try and stick with a driver version that works.
