Computer restarting during game play.Follow

Recently, I've been having some unusual problems in a few zones. I was doing an Unrest mission with some friends, and I was running through the zone to the tower to make all the undead mobs spawn. When I was about halfway up, my computer, for no reason I can tell, reset and restarted. When it was started back up, I logged back on, went to the character select screen, selected the character, and it started loading back up again. While in the process of loading up, again my computer reset.

I did not attribute this to something having to do with EQ until I ran the scandisk, and it found errors in the Unrest_1 and Unrest_3 map files.

A few days later, I was running through Neriak Foreign Quarter on another character of mine, and again, the same thing happened. Right in the middle of the zone, my computer reset for no reason I could explain.


I've been in both these zones before with no problems. I recently upgraded my video card to a GeForce 6200, and this was my first time in either zone since installing the new card. Could this somehow be the source of the problem, and how do I fix it. Does anyone else know what else the source could be and how to fix it, or if not, at least point me in the right direction.

Make sure your drivers are up to date.

Another problem that can cause this is heat. Take a can of air and blow the dust out of the comp.

I would also remove those 2 files that are giving you errors and then do a complete file check and the patcher will replace those 2 files.

Hmmm, that's wierd.

I wouldn't discount the heat. I have one computer with 2 video cards in it. It gets so hot that it reboots itself. I have to run it with the case open. =/

Oh wait, I remember a problem with nvidia. Something about the pixel shaders needed to be turned off and wern't compatable with nvidia. I think it was pixel shaders....it's in the advanced options somewhere (eq options that is). Anyway, that used to make my computer crash and reboot too.

f you were on different characters you might need to change the settings on each character seperatly. Beyond that I'm not sure. You did mention that you had just upgraded your video card. Did you change any of the settings?

Heat is the most common problem. The video card produces a lot of heat, more so when processing graphics. If it is a heat problem, it might be that certain zones could heat up the card more then others. I know it does with my computer.

Anyway, let me know what happens.

HI, lurker here who thought he'd finally send a post to help out with this issue. I've had the same spontaneous restarting problem with two seperate computers and the root cause has been bad RAM memory chips in both cases. Try downloading MEMTEST or similar memory chip testing program (almost all of them are free) and I'd be pretty sure that you will find your memory chips are having memory write and read errors. As far as I can tell, if a modern motherboard encounters a severe problem writing or reading to a memory chip it will reboot the computer spontaneously. In both cases I had no viruses, had completely defragged the hard drives, and run two disk utility programs to check for corrupted registry entries all to no avail.

Just my two cents. Hope it solves your problem. In any case, it's always a good idea to check how your memory chips are doing when we play a game that utilizes the RAM so intensively and definitely heats our computers ( my CPU runs at 128 degrees F while running EQ, but only 106 degrees F during normal operation).
