How is EverQuest?Follow

Hi everyone. First off, I have never played EQ. I have only played one mmorpg - Final Fantasy XI. I've been playing for 2 years and I love the game.

Recently, on our forums the question came up about how long these games last. We are preparing for our third expansion next month, and as of now we are still getting new people faster than people are leaving. But, when the subject came up of how long these games last it was mentioned that a lot of mmorpgs, including EQ, have been going on for a long time and still have a huge fan base. I belive you guys have had over 10 expansions?

My question is, what has kept you playing for so long? What kept you from leaving EQ for a newer game? And is there any ties between EQ and EQ2? I would have assumed the introduction of EQ2 would have meant the end of EQ1, but obviously, that's not the case.

This is just out of complete curiousity. I guess I can understand, I probablly would keep playing FFXI even after the next great mmorpg comes out.

We are on the 11th expansion and some of us just love the game.
I dont see any tie in between EQ the original and EQ2.
Others might but from what I saw on EQ2 it is not for me. I prefer EQ.

The answer is complex and long.

A very brief summary would be something like this;

There is a very strong social aspect to the way EQ works which meant that a strong community developed from the very beginning. Some people have been playing the game together for five years now.

The character development path, although very frustrating for some, is still the most compelling of all the games around.

The game is still very immersive, more so than EQ2 and WoW it seems. Many people continue to return to EQ telling tales of disappointment with the newer games.

The developers have worked hard to keep the game reasonably "modern", i.e. continually upgraded graphics, upgraded character models, upgraded UI.

The new content that comes along twice a year, for the most part adds to the depth of the game in a way that makes people want to keep playing.

The rich history of the game - the detailed story as well as the personal achievements - is what keeps me around. So many various people I've met and played with, things I've done and seen. So much time invested in my chars. Those are all reasons why I think, starting now, you'd probably do better playing EQ2. I introduced my girlfriend to EQ about a year ago, but then she switched to EQ2 and loves it.

Depth. The updated graphics and expansions are icing on the cake. What this game has is a unique depth. Because the original/core EQ was carefully thought out, the world is sufficiciently rich to sustain the player's suspension of disbelief, i.e. the world seems 'real', despite recent aberrations such as the GoD expansion and the MMs. It's all about storyline when you measure durability of a fiction, be it movies, novels or a MMORPG, and the basic storyline of EQ is solid.

That's very cool and I am glad you guys are all enjoying your game. It seems (just from reading these posts) that your fanbase is a little more mature than that of a WoW or the like. Thats one of the reasons I stick with FFXI - an older playerbase and leet talk is rare and looked poorly upon.
