Luclin Models - Do You Use Them?Follow

#27 Mar 26 2006 at 12:54 PM Rating: Decent
Laptop - some, Desktop - all

The use (or not) of Luclin model does not affect lag (in the traditional sense of a delay in data transmission from server to PC). Using the models does require more graphic rendering time (higher polygon count) and I think the textures are much larger. If you have very little video RAM, slow RAM, or an old graphics processor (or handicapped one, like those found in laptop) you will experience lag-like moments in any highly populated areas. The computer may have to pull textures in from main memory (or worse, hard drive cached memory) to render the screen in which case the frame rate plummets. It's been quite a challenge at times to keep the frame rate up on my laptop which is where I prefer to play most of the time. The fewer polygons, the simpler textures...the better.

I like the overall graphic improvements in the game. The modelers tho' really need to keep supporting low-resolution support as I suppose the most loyal players are less inclined to upgrade (our) hardware just to keep playing. So far...so good.

I don't know what they did to "fix" Freeport, but the initial framerate drag has been largely eliviated...good job folks! I haven't noticed if the Ro's have gotten better.

OH!

Additional comment: In any case, I wish the designers would give easier access to the pc/npc clip plane. I'm always sliding that bar to adjust frame rate. I've modified the UI to create a window I can always keep open, but in my limited experience modding the UI, it seems you have to keep components in their original windows which means...hiding components so you can have a tiny, but limited contol panel (and you have to load another UI if you want access to those controls you've hidden) and always having to open first the Options panel, then the Advanced panel...just to get to the control.

For those of you who haven't tried it...you can move around PoK just fine if you have the clip plane cut short, but of course, you can't see anyone unless they're standing right next to you. :p

My PC can run comfartably with all Luclin models on, but I only use Horses and Elementals, and that unwillingly.

Reason? The original models are full of character and personality, the Luclin ones are bland.

I use everything available also im running eq 2048x768 with 2 monitors. one for the game window and one for my ui and i have no problems with lag. Im even thinking of expanding to three monitors so i can have more chat windows open and my intire inventory as well.

In response to WoodElvenDruid.

My brother and I never use Luclin models. My brother sums it up by saying, "The Luclin models make the men look like pansies and the ladies just look ugly. The old models the men looked like men and the women look hot."

I have horses and elementals turned on but my brother doesn't even have that. He likes the old mage elementals. Without the Luclin characters turned on neither of us see mounts, except i see them when someone is in skelly form or a froggy.

I just now remembered that my brother does have the Var Shir Luclin models turned on. He says he can't see much of a diffrence between the two and the old model kittys when they dual-wield a weapon and are just standing there they have the off-hand weapon being heald upside down.

I don't use any at all.
although i have a fast PC and a nice video card, i much the prefer very fast displaying (especially in raids) that the lulin models don't allow.

and even with that, some encounters are extremly laggy graphic wise (*kof* *kof* Yar'lir )

I have all the Luclin models turnes on, never really noticed a difference with them off, except that i couldnt stand the old human models. As for Lag.... i always had lag in pok or with large groups of people, or... for no apparent reason, untill.. i was fixing a friends computer, amd athalon 1900 + with a old gforce 2 and 256 m of ram. Lo and behold, i hardly had any lag whatsoever, then i look to my 2.4 gig celeron R with 1.2gig of ram nividia 6600 256 M of ram graphics card, and i cant move at all in pok at bank !! My 2 previous computers were both intel's too, and both those i had the same lag issuis. So i took my 6600 256 ram card out, put it in the 1.6 mhz computer, added another 512 ram to mak it run 1 gig, and WOW, i never knew EQ could be like this! I could turn on a dime, walk into the main bank in pok with 150 peps in the zone, plus have all shaders on and shadows ! and NOT lag. Why this works?? i have no idea, if anyone has any thougts, please let me know.

I hate new models primarly since I think ogres look just like taller humans with em. Trolls are lousy looking too.. Old models ftw! ^^

Ferrangie,

Try shift+ the + or - key to adjust your clip plane without opening up the options/advanced panel.

On my main box I always have all modles turned on. If I am 2 or 3 boxing, I have on female wood elves, female DE, male barbarians, elementals and mounts so that my characters can use their mounts.

Actually the lag produced by internet connection and the lag produced by graphics processing are not related. You may experience "Lag" from having the graphics too high - but that is lag caused by processing graphics. The data that EQ receives across the network is not related to graphics processing as your client receives the same information whether or not you have graphics on super high or super low.

I will go more in depth for those that have the interest. Your EQ client receives data that tells your computer whats going on in the whole zone (yes the entires zone). You don't see all the data but your client does. The data being sent is a very small amount of data. So if there is a high elf wizard on the other side of the zone, wearing a red robe and holding a wooden staff, your client is told by the eq server the facts about that one dot on the map. The server is just sending the coordinates of a DOT and a a few pieces of code that tell your computer how to draw that dot and which direction that dot is facing.

??? ogres looking like taller humans?? i doubt anyone seriously mistakes them lol, although ogres still look like the idiots they are. And anyone who prefers the fat tub o lard old troll graphics is just saying "look at me i been playing the game since beta and dammit i deserve some recognition for it"
whatever, the new troll look is fricking awesome. Its the entire reason I play THE DOMINANT RACE. Muscular gargoyle looking creatures to instill fright in the weaker races. Shadowknight was meant for the troll. Not some weakling lil dark elf sheep (biggest percentage of sk is de). New models FTW

I use all old models except elementals.

My computer is decent except in the ram department I have about 500MB. At one point I was really frustrated at my long load times so i got a nice graphics card and it didnt seem to make much difference.

I have had a bug for a while where if there is an effect on me like sow or bard speed the animation looks really demented like one leg is straight down and he pivots back and forth on it really quickly almost like he is limping really fast.

I use the horses and anything I have a character for. I would rather have the faster gameplay than enhanced graphics...

Luclin models don't care about your connection speed, they care about how much RAM you have in your computer

Maybe I'm the only one but I started EQ back in 99 before kunark when cap was still 50, and I got addicted so fast, it's really not even funny at all, it's just sick, how the game manifested itself in my brain. I love all the old graphics, the new ones are crap, everyone holding their weapons at different angles, sitting down in sensi style... I tell ye the classic holding your weapons in each hand help straight up, that's classic, can't beat it.

Ogres are simply the coolest old model ever, a big fat tub of lard with size 25 feet and enough belly role for a family of hobbits to crawl up in and live out their entire life as well their grandchildren, while becoming rich as real estate agents selling empty spaces of fat on different locations on the surface of the ogres belly.

Alot of things done "back in the day" are alot better than to day, like wizzy/droods porter service... but besides the point, old eq models are the best and will always be the collest.
