I would like to bring to you attention of a petition Attempting to bring back the Classic Everquest many of us enjoyed before it was watered down, the link to sign the petition is here:
http://www.classiceqpetition.com/petition.php
for anyone who is intrested in a classic server plz take a small amount of time to sign the petition it, and maybe post on the forums afterwards if u like. If at all posible you can help get the word out to old guildies or friends it would be greatly appriciated. Our goal is to reach 5000 signatures so sony cant turn a blind eye to this : )

Yeah, this has been done. If Sony ignored the polls before opening Mayong, they're not going to respond to yet another dead-horse-beating petition.

Although i do admire all of your persistence, i really do not think an original EQ server would draw enough to make it worth the financial cost.

I believe thay SoE went with the highest number of votes on their poll, and that is why the 51/50 server was made. I also believe they were sincere in their statement that they would do whatever the population decided.

Personally, i wish they had made every server have an option to start at 51/50, but that was not to be.

Of those 993 signers on your petition(as of this post), even if half of created and maintained active accounts, that is Still only ~$7,500.00 a month. I do not think that would pay enough for the maintenance and the development costs.

Thank you for reading, and have a great weekend.

Ask for something technically simpler and perhaps it would happen.

I'll explain: so many patches and updates have occurred between expansions. Many of these were to fix things that were broken or decided to be broken. A true classic progression server would launch with all these warts and then be patched in a historically accurate manner?

Alot of people would quit the server the second they realized they had to stare at a spellbook.

Even if you got "EQ as it was just prior to the launch of Luclin" then you would be getting what is already offered (albeit buggier) on the Ak Abor server for mac people. Switching to Mac isn't that big of deal (I have bought 4-5 computers in my time playing mmos, mostly EQ --I could easily have gone mac for classic EQ). I haven't heard of overcrowding on Ak Abor though.

So what people really want is today's eq stripped down of mudflated content. Closing off Luclin (PoP or whatever) zones isn't hard to do. Going back and removing all the content that was retrofitted onto the old zones is a nightmare of programming time. Shutting off ooc regen, disabling PoK, etc. might not sound like a lot of work but add it all up the "special conditions" often cited as making a classic server = more work than an expansion with very debatable rewards for Sony for the efforts.

I don't oppose a classic server, I just don't forsee it happening.

Now, the above is a bit of a raincloud perhaps. Speaking more optimistically here is what I think Sony could do that would please many players:

Create a new server that is level-capped. 3 months at 50. 3 months at 60. 3 months at 65. Open to regular transfers at that point (either merge it away or merge one of the so-called dying old servers into it --whatever Sony's internal metrics and wisdom tell them makes sense).

But, at the 6 month mark when the cap goes to 65 open up another server with the same rules. This way the folks that want old-school eq get a continous cycle of servers where this is the reality for a while.

Edit: Ak Abor does include Luclin and PoP, so I should clarify that to not misrepresent.

There was a poll? Personally I think that whatever poll this was... the majority of the people who would support a classic eq are no longer subscribers and never would've seen that poll.

They arent going to make a classic server simply because people want them to, they will do whatever makes them the most money. If you really want to play EQ classic then go play on one of the hundreds of EQ classic emulator servers out there.

i think a cool idea would be to make a classic server and release the expansions on the dates their were originally released. so in essence your doing eq over again except all the stuff is there so they don't have to mess with as much. Of course then youd have to wait 4 years for froggies but hey:P people keep complaining about the good ole days of eq and heres a way of doing it. not sure how feasible it would be though.

It's already been necro'd so I'll throw in my 2 cents.

That's the problem, people don't seem to understand the concept of nostalgia. Even if that petition did hit 5K signatures, I'm willing to bet more than 4K of those people would go right back to their normal servers after a week. That's a huge investment on Sonys part with zero payoff.

Bingo. It's called Shards of Dalaya. Go Google it. It's as close to original EQ as you're ever going to get.

I've been around here long enough to know what I just did. In this case, I feel it's warranted.
