I just got https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=78706 and I realized... I don't have anywhere to put it. What's something easy to get at 76 (Mage) to use it in?
Almost all named dropped gear in SoF drop a type 7 and a type 7/3 version of the same gear, slightly better stats than just the type 7 one. Should be able to either buy something in baz or pet tank named in Dragonscale or Loping and get something.
Also, it is my understanding that the pet focus items only affect when you summon the pet. You could put this augment on a piece of gear that you carry around, but only wear it when you summon a pet. Might be easier to find an inexpensive piece of gear in the bazaar to start using the augment immediately.

That is correct, and that's a great suggestion. Just remember to equip the gear each time you summon a new pet.

My problem is that I forget to put the "good" gear back on after summoning the pet.
