Any combo well played. This question has been debated over the years, many times on this forum. Do yourself a favor and search the forums for previous discussion.

Druid/sk
shaman/sk
monk/shaman
mage/mage

And many many more.

I have been considering Necro/Ranger.
This idea came from the idea of the necro aggro kiting while the ranger just shoots at the mob

There is no "best" 2 or 3 box combo. With the addition of mercs virtually all combos are valid and extremely efficient.

Some things you need at higher levels are:
1 tanking
2 healing
3 pulling or some sort of crowd control

Tanking can be handled by any one of the 3 main tank classes OR a merc OR a mage pet. Healing can be handled by a cleric, druid, shammy OR an healer merc. Pulling/CC is still the responsibility of the player, some choices are Bard, Monk, necro for pulling, enchanter or bard for cc.

The only thing to keep in mind is that if you use a mage pet for a tank you cannot have any melee toons in range of the mob or they will become the default tank.

Given that info you should be able to choose 2 or 3 toons based on what classes you've played in the past and what you enjoy.

Personally I don't enjoy casting classes and have 2 3 box teams. Team 1 is war/bard/shm with 1 healer merc and 2 melee dps mercs. I also have a 2 mage, 1 wiz team with 1 healer merc and 2 caster dps mercs.

imo the one class you always want to have in a duo is a Shaman. They're just a force multiplier for any group in which they're involved. But heck, people are doing Mage / Mage with two mercs and plowing through content, so... yeah. I mean. Do whatever you like. But imo a Shaman is the #1 class to have around, if one of you is willing to play one.

I have been 2 and 3 boxing for a while, though dont use a lot of sophisticated methods. If you use 2 machines for 2 boxing, that is fine. If one, then need to get into ISBoxer as follow becomes a little problamatic.

As to characters, I have a cadre of characters, and find a caster/tank type as always the best combo. I start them in pairs, leave the mines immediately, get mercs, then die to return, and do all the quests in the mines and you level quickly. Getting to about 50 is not too bad, and then the going gets slow. Using higher characters does help, but levelling more than 2 levels a night is tough. From 65 on it is really slow.

My main combo is a DRU (82)/RNG (83) with JV mercs. I do ok in Old BB and Kith but FOS gives me problems with the names, as they rapidly aggro onto the DRU, and summon him, so goodbye DRU.

i run 2 90 mages the beter mage has em 11 and runs earth pet outher runs water with argo sords on earth and mewipe on the water the em8 water pet never pulls argo. mages get fade and memwipe pet if u use thows and ther down can alwhes coth pull. i pull back and hit 1 key witch sends pet and makes gargol then 86bolt nuke to the 90 spear. by the time the spear nuke hits gargol repops. i repeat the same key on bolth mages 1 mage has over 6k aa outher 1 like 1700 aa i can run jist 1 t5 merc and keep pets up but i like to run 2 from time to time coz mercs are dumb and jist stand ther and die

I haven't boxed in a couple of years but I used to box a mage and an enchanter - both had mercs - one cleric and one tank. Worked really well. I usually boxed my ranger with a shaman and their rogue and tank mercs. That worked well too. Seriously, any combo works if you learn the classes well enough and learn to adapt.

My favorite combo was monk and shaman. Monk can get singles and shaman can slow them, making most mobs tankable for a monk. Just make sure the shaman doesn't get aggro. And with shaman buffs dps is pretty good to, and they have a great heal over time. But like everyone said, any combo will work now with mercs. It's just a mater of figuring out the best strategy for that combo.

Honestly it would likely be a toss up on xp gain depending on the classes you pair with merc(s).

If you're looking for a duo to be self sufficient on healing and tanking both, you're likely to be sacrificing dps and/or utility. Letting a merc take care of the bulk of the healing or tanking makes it easier for you to focus on dps/pulling/utility which could realistically make enough difference to gain what xp you lose sharing with mercs. Not to mention this gives you the added potential for targeting more difficult content with mercs on your side.

Since you mentioned a tank/priest combo, I would offer the suggestion of a Shaman and tank. Shammies can compensate for the weaknesses of merc healing while being a huge boon to your other toon. Shadowknights make for very nice combo with a Shaman if you crave a really dynamic twosome.

With all that being said, I agree with the idea that you should go for the classes that you find enjoyable to play. The ideal setup of toons won't be ideal if they feel like a chore to play, and it simply isn't worth it when so many duo's can be successful.

Edit: Seeing now that you already have a paladin, I would say that if you enjoy playing it you should feel no obligation to ditch it for another tank class.

I've always felt the best 2-box combo (best class to play, etc.) is the ones you have the most fun with.

As someone else mentioned, with the addition of mercs, any combination is very good now.

i play shm (main) and mage and they so ROCK hard,
shm can slow .
can cast hot (overtime heal) and the slow (counterbias ) who proc also a stackable HOT at lv 90 it about 12,000 per tic heal average (with the right aa's.you don't even need a merc usually.
growth buff who is more hp than reliance and unity combined.

lethargy agro buff to keep the agro on pet all the time, even if you cast twincast dd right away.
aa root to keep a mob rooted for 3 min.

heavy dots from shaman,2 group heals+ one heal.
always have the best buff (reliance from merc and unity from shaman ).

well that's from level 86 + ...if u want a combo who can rock hard all the time this one is.......

i played a shm/monk when both were lv 85 and over 2k aa each, and i changed for a mage and it was my best move.

i even got 2 mages now (both with minion 8 pet focus ) since i was xp maxed ,both are level 90,,one maxed aa other one at 2800 aa's,but the shm/mage combo is much tougher than when i play 2 mages.and i don't have any pulling problem with the coh pull combined with the aa root or regular root.

anyway, play the class you like the most since the mercs, open so much possibilities........

If you enjoy your pally, don't hesitate to simply pair it with a shammy instead. They will make a plenty powerful duo as well.
#20 Jul 27 2011 at 4:27 PM Rating: Decent
well pally if u want to play him combined with shaman (any melee type fit well with a shm anyway )is not bad,but will lack on pulling...........
instance like pit of all fear (or many other one where you can agro a bunch of mobs ) where slow / root /coh is very easy,or with a shadowknight pulling, you will struggling at higher levels because of the pulling part with a pally (i don't play one but they not used to pull much imo ).

sure at lower level you will have no problem, depend what is your goal, play only for fun,not needed to get max toughnest or your boxing ect.

anyway getting a toon (boxed or not ) to lv 70 like your pally is pretty easy now specially with the mercs....

what server you playing btw?

Paladin/druid is a good combo, but one of the first I mentioned way back when is druid/sk.
I added my paladin to a druid/sk combo (played by a long missing poster Kajolus) and there wasnt much we couldnt handle in the kunark zones.

Jon,
Not that the combo you are touting isn't a great combo...but the reason you could handle anything that came at you was the experience and quality of player you have become...the average wannabe boxer or newbie4236 player will never experience that feeling of:

'We just did that!...YEAH'

Just sayin'

P.S. missing that feeling myself lately, lol.

Public note, Always plays a Druid and Sk as part of his rotating trio.
I would agree that playing with Kajolus and a few others, including Always, made me a better player.
