I thought back in the day the top selection (Receive Guild) on the Options Menu - General could toggle guild chat on and off but it doesn't seem to be doing that so I'm probably mistaken. Is there an easy way to be able to temporarily toggle off group chat, please?
I currently have two chat windows set up - the main chat window for fights/melee/spells, etc. and a second window for chat from guild, groups, raids, etc.

The Options button is for Guild Invites. If it's off, you will never get the confirm dialog to an invite.
Options - Filters tab, is what you want to completely turn it off or any other messages.
But what I generally do, since I only turn off Guild Chat is when their are crappy long arguments about stuff, generally, political in nature, is right click on my trash window that is /chatfontsize 1 and most of the time minimized, and send the guild chat to that window, then do the same on my main chat when I'm ready to see it again.

I thought there was a toggle to turn chat on and off - thank you for refreshing my memory on where it is.
I have a separate window for guild chat and decided to just click the x on the box, thinking I could get it back from my main window but when I tried that I had to start all over with a new second window. Last night I just lowered the chat window below my viewing range...lol.
