I realize this question is opposite of what most want in a guild, but thought I'd ask anyway...

...I enjoy playing EQ "slower" than most and by that I mean I'm not into grinding through levels quickly and have no interest in raids. My play style is soloing or grouping with 1-3 friends. I enjoy trade skills and simply exploring EQ. When I played years ago for 7 years straight I was in two guilds during that time. Upon recently returning, I had no intention of joining a guild but was approached by a guild's leader who asked me to join. She had been very helpful to me, so I did. The guild seems like a nice group of people, but here is my dilemma:

Like the two guilds I joined years ago, most people (at least the handful that are the ones most active in guild chat) are leveling or being power leveled up quickly. One woman who returned to the game at the same time I did lost her former toon and was starting over. I met her when she was in the 20's level. In approximately 3 weeks this woman is now level 60. My main toon is 66. It took 7 years to reach 61. I do level slowly due to my preferred play style, but I think leveling is faster now.

My question is basically, are there any guilds in EQ on the FV server where most of the people aren't rushing to level and enjoy the more social aspects of the game, or is this the point of guilds in general? I am debating if a guild is really for me. Even though I am happy with the way I enjoy playing EQ, watching guild chat makes me feel like I *should* be "catching up" since the majority of guild chat is congratulating the levelers.

Decided to throw this question out there before making any decision to leave this guild or not. Again, the issue is not with the guild nor its members - I just don't feel like I'm contributing anything to it due to my play style plus the chat, as stated before, is mainly centered around leveling.

Thank you for any suggestions.

I don't have any suggestions for guilds on the FV server although I do have a much beloved level 40 shaman there. I used to play with a small handful of friends and we played, chatted, explored and just had a great time with no goals or pressure. I just wanted to add some support to your play style since it is similar if not identical to my own.

I have no interest in rushing to level cap and no interest in end-game content. To me the game is the journey and I take it as slow as I like. I agree that this puts us at odds with the way most people play and the goals of most guilds. I have been in guilds that supported this play style but they are hard to find and never seem to last long.

On the TLP servers I thought this would be markedly different. I rolled a new shaman on day 1 but within 2 weeks I was already 25-40 levels below most in the guild and found myself alone again. You do get a distinct sense that you have nothing to offer to the guild at that point.

It is possible to find people and guilds that are there for casual play, small groups, and social chat. I hope someone here can point you to some like minded people on FV.

Thank you, Samatman - your answer does sound very, very similar to my preferred EQ play style. Still pondering on leaving guild or not. At the moment I have guild chat turned off so I'm kind of drifting that direction it seems.

Please feel free to look me up with your Shaman if you would like to duo sometime. I have a level 36 Pally. I will usually be on my main - Terrillian - or my newbie toon, Czari.

I've been level 70 on my main for 3-4 years. Very slow sporadic play.

So I support your playstyle preference.

People congratulating in guild chat only have so much to says congrats too ---dinging a level is a really easy obvious one. If your successes are valued by your guildmates it is fine for people to have different priorities in a guild, but only you can make that call (i.e., if they are a cool bunch of people you want to associate with).

I feel much better knowing I'm not the only one who plays slowly and sporadically. I had not been on EQ for at lest 4 years and returned for the 45 free play days then decided to add another month. One goal I never reached previously was to become a Master Baker.

Thank you for your input, snailish. I just did a quick count of guild members currently active (ie. have played at some point this summer) and stopped at about 120 members and I was only up to the M's. Those 120 members were a small group compared to probably 3 times as many who haven't played recently - some as far back as 2009. Of the 120 current players (again, only halfway through the alphabet when I got tired of counting...lol) I would say maybe 20 at most of those are names I recognize via guild chat and some of those are alts of one person.

So, my current thinking is the guild isn't too concerned how active a member is and there are at least 100 people who have been playing since I began that I've never seen, so I feel better about staying and participating as I choose.

I'm away for a couple weeks now but I'll look you up, Azalysa, when I get back.

I haven't been following much of the recent news about FV (aside from the free transfers to it). Were there any changes in the ruleset or experience rates there? Was it affected by the server mergers? How has the population been with the 'free' 45 day extensions?

Back on topic though, if the guild you're in is that large with 100s of active members, there are sure to be a lot of people sitting on the sidelines just leveling up at their own pace, and probably by themselves. I've found that when you feel marginalized by not being part of the guild "A" team, you often just shut up and plod along quietly.

Sometime, when you see a bunch of names online you don't recognize, it might be worth asking in guildchat if anyone is interested in exploring a new place with you. Worst case is you get no answer, but you might just find that there are some like minded people you didn't even know where there.

No you're not alone. my toon is lvl 82 and was 'born' in march 2000. She has all skills maxed, all tradeskills maxed and trophies, so don't feel you are solo in your preferred playstyle, mine is like you

Azalysa, what you are experiencing is probably far more common than you think it is. If your current guild is anything like it was back in the day, then I doubt any one would worry that you just wanted to "smell the roses on the way" and take your own time!

Sadly(imo)the majority these days do want to rush through the levels, but that is a little bit of the nature of the beast these days. I always say if someone wants to take their time, then that is fine, if they want to rush, then well I guess that's fine too - just don't be expecting me to PL you :)

I understand all the grats etc can seem a little daunting, but trust me, it becomes automatic after a while especially since all those achievements are relayed to guild chat these days. It is so automatic that my dear friend gratsed himself in guild chat this weekend, it was hilarious :)

A little tip on the Guild Roster, if you click on any of the columns at the top it will sort it o the column, making counting active members far easier (if you really want to get technical you can hit the dump button, which will put a file in your eq directory, you can then open this in excel or something)

As to other guilds on FV, apart from the raiding guilds, most really just do not mind at all. While you may not feel you are "contributing", it does not sound to me like your are taking advantage, or grasping or trolling or raiding the guild bank, or any of the other things that really would tick a guild (well me!) off

Safe journeys out there

A few recent changes have happened to Firiona Vie I am not sure when you are talking from but this year we have seen

Enhanced XP - 50pct bonus
8 Character Slots
Free Transfers on (still no transfers off)
Removal of bind point restrictions so they are like normal servers

As to the population, as a long term resident, I can say it seems very healthy to me. We have seen a lot of transfers on from normal and test servers and there is much more activity generally.

Just to put it all in perspective, the group I played with on FV left somewhere around 7 years ago. My last act at the time was to take the 100k plat I had and buy all the Flowing Thought gear I could find in the bazaar. I figured it was a hedge against plat inflation cause, you know, FT gear will *always* be needed. heh... yeah so much for that.

I didn't know there had been bind & exp changes, thanks for the heads-up. That's also great that the population is picking up! FV always had the ruleset I preferred the most and it might be a nice respite from the TLP solo grind I have found myself in.

I think I may just need to drag my computer along with me the next few weeks...

Would enjoy seeing you in game. Your questions have been well answered by egnaro but will add my thoughts:

*After I had been playing awhile years ago on the Tarew Marr (now merged with Drinal) server, I heard about the FV server. I was intrigued by the role play aspect so I created a toon there to check it out. At that time only one toon was allowed, players could only understand the language of their own race, and good races could not group with evil races, iirc. I saw language lessons offered in general chat regularly.

Now FV permits the same amount of toons as the other servers, Elvish is the default language (which can be selected from the menu by clicking the chat box), and all races can group. It is more convenient this way but from my limited past experience to the few weeks I've been on FV now, I personally found it more fun/challenging the way it was originally. I have no idea of exp difference. To me it seems just like other servers.

*As far as the population, I see a lot of general chat about people who played back in the day returning and choosing FV for the first time. I'm sure the 45 free days has something to do with people returning - that's how I came back. However, I saw this same chat on the Drinal server (which was what my original server, Tarew Marr, was merged with apparently), so returning to EQ is likely not specific to EQ. The population numbers seem similar to Drinal as well.

*The main thing I noticed that convinced me to transfer all my toons over to FV after creating a new toon to check it out is that the people overall seem a bit friendlier. In fact, I was invited into the guild that began this thread my first day in the tutorial and although I was debating on remaining in the guild, it was not due to lack of friendliness. I have now been on the FV server the same amount of time as I was on Drinal recently and I get tells from random people asking various questions so, again, I have personally found it a bit more social.

I spoke to the guild leader this evening with my concerns and she said she can think of 15 people offhand in guild who have my same play style and that the main thing is if I'm happy. She said I would never be a detriment to the guild (one of my questions) by not being one of the fast leveling/raiding types. The leader and several guild members have been very helpful to me in getting the parchments/runes from higher level zones that I need for my spells. In fact, the leader asked me to join a small group she was in tonight to help me gain another level. I ended up dying upon zone in due to not having invis on, so I decided to try another evening, but just an example of her reaching out to me which I thought was very nice considering all the tells, etc. I'm sure she gets.

That is *exactly* how I enjoy playing EQ - having my toon being "well-rounded" and I really enjoy trade skills as well. Out of curiosity, are you in a guild, or have you been in the past, and did you have any of my concerns re: others mainly focused on leveling? (Another example is a member who began a new toon yesterday and as of tonight is already level 48!!! The woman I've mentioned who was in the low 20's level when we met is now level 75.)

egnaro wrote:

It sure seems like rushing to level is popular. I found a bit of advice in a Druid leveling guide that said to not level too rapidly as one would not really learn their skills well that way. I guess if someone already had a toon that was leveled more slowly and he knew the game well that alts might be different, but (also imo) since different classes are generally chosen, I still think what I read is good advice.

Now do I sound like the kind of person that would ask for power leveling? *grins* I've had at least 4 people in guild specifically offer this to me. I'm probably puzzling them when I thank them for the offer but decline.

Thank you for that tip - I've had fun looking through it now that I know about the sort feature.

My main concern was not having anything to contribute in the way of helping others level or joining in on raids but the guild leader has now put that to rest. The guild bank seems to always be full and I heard an officer ask in chat the other day if people would please go look for items their alts could use so they would have room for more deposits. I am very conscious of only taking what I can use from the guild bank and deposit anything I can to help out.

The new gear types is a learning curve for me. I worked so hard for my full Elysian outfit prior to leaving and now it is like newbie attire compared to the new items. I feel for you re: buying all the Flowing Thought gear to bank.

Sorry this is such a long post. I decided to answer everyone in one post rather than a bunch of smaller ones. Again, your posts and encouragement have been most appreciated and encouraging.

Hey there! I play on the FV server myself. I have a variety of toons myself and prefer to actually slow down a lot. It seems that grinding makes the game more boring to me. I love the questing/tradeskilling aspect of the game better than going out there and actually grinding my head off.

If you're in need of company, I can usually be found on Gooshy or Jaccy (I do have lower level toons, if you need a party member). =)

Hi missjackie :)

I agree that grinding is extremely boring - at least to me. As someone said within this thread, for me the journey is the fun part. I've been having a blast the last few days farming a bit of plat by killing giants all around Norrath with my main and remembering that in the "olden days" we had to have a group or two to kill one. I made a visit to Crystal Caverns this morning to pay a visit to my "friends" the Geonids and pick up some gems there.

I would love to duo or group with you. My toons are:

*Terrillian - Level 66 Woodelf Druid (Main)
*Azalysa - Level 36 High Elf Paladin (Haven't played her in quite awhile so a bit rusty on how to play a Paladin)
*Tsari - Level 33 High Elf Enchanter (Never grouped her for crowd control but in a duo situation I could likely handle that)
*Czari - Level 20 Woodelf Druid (Created as a test to see if I would enjoy the FV server)

Do you belong to a guild or know of any small, family type guilds on FV?

I will add you to friends list and look forward to chatting and/or playing with you.

I just left the guild a few moments ago. I sent the leader mail, thanking her for inviting me to join and all her help. I stressed that this was a personal decision and not reflective of the guild.

Samatman said it best:

Samatman wrote:
I've found that when you feel marginalized by not being part of the guild "A" team, you often just shut up and plod along quietly.

When I first joined I was active in guild chat. I was always well-received, but as I have stated, the chat of this group is centered primarily on people offering to PL others and "I want at least 5 levels today" type of chat.

It came down to weighing the positives and negatives and, for me, the negatives unfortunately outweighed any positive benefit other than access to the guild bank but, imo, that is not a reason to stay. I was most appreciative of the items that were most helpful for my toons, but also made sure that I deposited at least as many items as I withdrew.

I could have stayed and just done my thing. I spoke with the Guild Leader personally the past two nights and she assured me however I wished to play was no problem. She even asked me to join a high level group so I could "gain at least a level" one night. I said ok since she was reaching out to me, but I ended up dying before I could even begin in the particular zone, so that was definitely not fun.

If anyone knows of a small, non-cliquish, family type guild on FV who isn't into a lot of raiding and is more casual in play style, I would love to check it out. For now, my EQ life won't be any different except that I can't access Guild Lobby and my name isn't on a roster.

Again, many thanks for your posts, encouragement, and thoughts on this matter.

Happy Hunting!

So just when I thought my guild situation was at least temporarily suspended, I was journeying through Norrath to gain another year for my original toon, a High Elf Paly created before I realized High Elves aren't the best choice for this class. She does not venture out much since I discovered the Druid class, but since she was my "first" - I bring her out now and then.

Thinking the Tower of Frozen Shadows would be an ideal place to level, my new tank merc (hey, low-gear Palys need all the tanking help they can get...lol) and I mosied in - to immediately fall into a pit teeming with every manner of undead known on Norrath. I was applauding my foresight in purchasing a (very expensive) gate potion as I watched my health bar reach 1% as I poofed out. Whew!!! Close call.

Next stop - Castle of Mistmoore. As I was traveling there I get the "You are low on food" message. Are you kidding me? I had *just* arrived at the dread Castle. Making a mental note to make sure I always have enough provisions before adventuring, my stay in Mistmoore was brought to a jarring halt as I pulled a blue mob - no problem for me and my trusty merc, right? WRONG! Due to hunger fatigue I hadn't realized it was a blue NAMED con. With the "Run away, Run away" refrain from Monty Python and the Holy Grail ringing in my mind, I made a beeline for zone.

Hungry and bruised, I limped home to Felwithe when a voice hailed me from some unseen locale. "Hail, Noble Knight!" Standing at the Felwithe merchant, I quickly looked left and right, but no one was around. As I was pondering this, the voice spoke again. "Our guild is looking for a Valiant Knight and would like to offer an invitation to you." Thinking that now my hearing was askew since I have not heard that the services of the Devoted Knights of Norrath are in high demand, especially one of my relatively young years, I spoke into the air, hoping it would somehow reach the originator of the mysterious voice.

####

That is how it happened that my young Paladin, as well as her elder sister Druid, joined another guild. Upon my questioning of "the voice" I was told this guild that was established in 2004 on another server but recently came to FV. It is a small, family-type guild that does not raid (on this server) but instead is involved in casual play and groups. MY KIND OF GUILD!!

Something that I find interesting - in all the years I have played EQ, past & present, I have been a member of now a total of 4 guilds (2 from 2000-2007 & the recent 2) and never asked to join any of them; I was always approached and invited. I see people in the General channel seeking to join guilds regularly and yet it seems I just go about my business in EQ and receive invitations from guilds. The ironic thing is that I am quite happy exploring Norrath solo or perhaps with a friend or two, but there are benefits, even for my type, in guild membership - provided it is a guild that "fits" me well.

Just an interesting update "twist" from my original post. ;)

I really enjoyed reading about your exploits. In fact I got so lost in memories of exploring and close calls with death that it wasn't until you mentioned the merc that I remembered this wasn't a years old story from days gone by, or even something from the TLP servers.

It also made me remember how it is that you can play for hours, accomplish exactly nothing, but still have the most amazing time in a game world.

Thanks for posting your story and congrats on finding a guild that suits you perfectly!

One unsolicited comment. Try a dps merc instead of a warrior, see if it makes a difference in surviving.

I agree with Jonwin. If in modern gear... paladins are very hard to kill under level 65 if facing appropriate content. But, dps is not the best.

At 70 my brother's undergeared paladin was still hard to kill (he was a chain stunning type) but he took forever to do stuff. He did make the mistake of doing no AA prior to level 70 though, and then trying to tank 70-75 group content. I would call that an invitation to poor results.

DPS merc might just boost it (your DPS) up to be very effective.

Another thought: are you using skinspikes (a damageshield) potions? Usually someone is selling them in baz. Even the ones for level 10 are overpowered vs. higher level Kunark and old world content. I solo tanked a rogue to the high 40s with skinspikes and temperance in a very short time.

Your playing on Fironia Vie (with its different nodrop rules), so you could ante up for some Damage shield clickies too:

blazing vambraces

or

Coldain ring #8

note that ring #8 is overwritten by the skinspike pots so don't pay a premium for it. But depending on your cashflow, it could be worth grabbing. Note that speculators will have either of these priced very high, but if you watch they do come up between 5-20k on occasion.

Edit: clarity of a sentence

..........I had help here with a merc question and saw your post. My recent guild exp was a complete disaster as we had different agendas. I should have queried more but the guild turned out to be most interested in blowing through content in Underfoot expansion then the Thule expansion. When I asked in guild chat for help with some SoD progressions........(tumbleweed quiet). I withdrew from the guild after a number of ignored requests. The guild had the top crust of players and if you weren't ready to wait a year or two, play ever day for many hours and hit every raid...well, you were pretty much ignored. Oddly, as in this forum with Yther and Snailish, the best help I have ever had in game was due to people that I had never seen before. Just random acts of sharing and kindness on their part. That kind of reminds me why I have loved the game for so long. You would be in game, newish zone for ya, all alone when some player comes by, saves your *** and leaves you all buffed without so much as a word. That is a true MMORPG spirit. Help when you see the chance. Way too many too busy big shots these days but the game as I play it still is a thing of wonder. And just a thought for Azalysa, do what a friend and I did............form your own guild to enjoy guild hall and guild bank. I named my guild The Cosmic Utensils on Rathe server.

Drek (86 Warrior) and Jond (86 Druid)..............(now starring T-5 mercs !!!!)

The saga continues...

After being in the new guild a few days, I had one of those "hunches" that something wasn't quite right but I couldn't put my finger on it. I had not been welcomed and introduced to the guild in guild chat as I had been in my prior guild, but different guilds have differing "personalities" so to speak so while I noticed that, it didn't particularly bother me. I did introduce myself, twice, as the two toons were guilded, and as another poster alluded to...crickets chirped. Ok it's a much smaller guild and only 5 members were currently logged in and they could be in the middle of a fight/group/etc. so again...no biggie.

As the days passed I noticed that no one spoke in guild chat. One of the issues of my former guild was the core group who were constantly congratulating each other, but no guild chat was more unsettling for some reason. I never heard another word from the GL, despite sending mail asking a question re: an instruction on their website.

I planned on sending mail to my former GL because I really respect her and I didn't want her to think I left that guild specifically to join this one. However, as fate would have it, I was standing at the entrance to BoT when who should ride up on her magnificent warhorse and greet me? Bingo! My former GL, before I'd sent a message to her. She "looked in horror" at my new guild tag and as she is not the type for sour grapes, that was another "confirmation" to me that something was a tad askew, at least for me, in the new guild. She was on her way to a group so we only had a few moments to chat but that encounter combined with other (to me) odd things about the new guild cemented my decision to leave it. I did send notice to the GL thanking her for the invitation but explaining that since my Paladin was the toon that the guild wanted, the average level of the guild was 70's, and I rarely play my Paladin as I had originally stated, that this toon would not be leveling up to be of any advantage to the guild.

I am not a "guild-hopper" so was a bit distressed at being in two guilds in a relatively short period of time. I did want to explain how I happened to join the second guild to my first GL so I sent a fairly lengthy missive explaining everything, including what had prompted me to leave the first guild. Ironically, being in the second guild and seeing the comparison made me realize that I had truly been in a quality guild in the first place and the conditions under which I left really involved only a tiny handful of people and my own personal issues.

Several days went by...This evening I was relaxing in Cobalt Scar trying to skill up in 1H slash as well as loot some gems when I was greeted "through the air" by my first GL. Bottom line, I gained an understanding of why I felt "unsettled" in the second guild. I wanted to ask if I could return to the first guild but felt a bit chagrined over the whole episode when I heard the words, "Are you ready to come home?"

I am in a guild that suits me perfectly - the original guild. It was a case of not knowing how good something was until there was a stark comparison. I am grateful to have been given a second chance.

Bet you didn't see that one coming. *winks*

Hi Jonwin & snailish!

Thank you for your recommendation re: a dps merc for my Paladin. This is going to sound like a really dumb question, but how does a tank merc differ from a dps. Would a dps merc be similar to a Rogue, Berzerker, or Monk?

Of my toons, the Paladin has always seemed the most "vulnerable", for lack of a better word. This is likely due to switching to the Druid very early in EQ and not really knowing how to play a Paladin well plus my penchant for primarily soloing. I am so used to casters with the ability to quickly gate out of a bad situation plus their various buffs. The Paladin also is the most undergeared which I know makes a difference. I was intrigued, snailish, by your comment that Paladins under 65 are hard to kill - but you did add the caveat of appropriate content and they don't have good dps.

Thank you as well for advice on the skinspikes potions and the various gear to look for in the bazaar. Now I'm excited to make these changes/additions and take a "test drive" with the Pally. :)

Hi, Huemanzee!

I'm sorry to hear about your guild experience. I think many times it's a bit of trial and error to find a guild that "works" with our various play styles, expectations, etc.

The guild had the top crust of players and if you weren't ready to wait a year or two, play ever day for many hours and hit every raid...well, you were pretty much ignored.
YIKES! That sounds like a full time job to me!!

I couldn't agree more and this spirit is what makes the game fun for me. When I played years ago, I enjoyed perching myself in an inconspicuous spot in a newbie zone and buff lower level players as they were struggling to kill the snakes, rats, and bats. Ah the memories of running to the guards with a pack of snakes, rats, bats, and usually skellies on my tail. Now with an population of 70+, mercs, 2-boxing, etc., sadly much of that fun is missing. I did offer buffs in the Guild Lobby several nights ago. Only one person responded, but even that made me feel good.

The kind people who have answered my questions in this forum and who I may never see in game really do seem like my EQ "family." Many thanks and appreciation to you all; I have learned and re-learned so many things that have been a tremendous help to me.
