Soloing Shaman in need of some help.Follow

Hi all

I am looking at getting back into EQ. I used to play it back in the day, but it has been over seven years since I played last. Back then I had all kinds of time to play, however now days I have a lot going on in real life. There for I do not have large amounts of time to be online at any give time. This is why I will mostly be soloing.

I have a friend of mine that is playing an SK and I would like to play a Shaman. I never really played a shaman and it’s been a lot of years since I read much about them.

My goal would be to create a Shaman character like the ones I used to read and hear so much about back in the day. I used to hear that Ogre Shamans could solo things that most other class couldn’t back in Kunark and Velious.

So basically I’m looking for some help in setting my character for success at what I want him to be able to do.

Race: I am going to go with Ogre for the frontal stun and because their starting STA 127 and WIS 77 equals 204 before adding any starting points, which is higher then any other race that can play a shaman.

So I have my class and I have my race. Now I need to know what I should go for more STA or WIS if I want to be like those beastly soloing Shamans of the past (Kunark/Velious days).

Is HP King for a soloing Shaman?
Is AC King?
Where does Wis or Mana fall in the line of things for a Kunark/Velious soloing shaman?

Does it go something like this HP > STA > AC > Mana?

What items should I get or will I need?

Please feel free to post any helpful info you may have to aid me in this.

Hi and welcome back,

The game has changed/evolved a lot in the past 7 years. It is now a lot easier/faster to level a character to max level (90 soon to be 95.)
If youre playing a Shaman it would compliment your friends SK very well. Via melee buffs, slowing ,healing and additional dps(dots/nukes and minimal to fair dps from pet). However the Shaman is not the fastest class to level solo after 80.

You can now hire mercenaries (use "find" to lead you to them in Plane of knowledge). There are Healer mercs(cleric),tank mercs and dps mercs.

If you will spend more time soloing, hire a tank merc, journeymen tier 1 merc till around level 75 ish..as they are a little overpowered for pre 70's content. After level 70-75 or so the tank merc begins to struggle a bit against even con mobs. From here you would need to group to increase your falling rate of xp/hour as you level up. In the 80's purchase a cleric merc,it can provide your group with a 96% rezz and will act as a healer and cleric buff. Allowing you to dps more while your friends SK tanks the mobs.
By lvl 80 you would need to have stopped at a sweet spot and earned about 500 aas minimum to really be effective at healing and doing meaningful dps via dots and dd spells later on.

For a Shaman > Wisdom affects mana pool and skillup chance
For all classes > Stamina affects HP pool....Agility affects Avoidance and AC...Strength affects melee damage...Dexterity affects melee damage and chance to successfully hit the mob....I would concentrate on wisdom(increased mana pool, skillup chance) and stamina(HP pool) to a lesser degree.

Level 75 and up gear would correct any imbalances in stats from earlier on.

"Defiant" gear is available for all level ranges up till level 80 where many other options open up.."Defiant" gear drops globally from relevant level mobs and is sold in the bazaar significantly cheaper than on an npc merchant. This gear is better than most old world raid gear and will help you level faster till 80+ where the bulk of the population/grouping is at.

Hope this helps.

Forgot to add.
If you are well geared at the lower levels, you can stand toe to toe and tank while dotting and nuking the mob even as a Shaman.

In this case I would hire a healer merc(journeymen t1) for the cleric buffs and healing if neccesary. This strategy will become increasingly difficult around level 75-80ish but gladly all your melee skills(1hb,offence,defense,parry,dodge etc.)would be maxed as a result.

When you are 85 go to SOD expansion and do the "Earth theme" to upgrade the your J1 healer merc to a j5 merc..This merc can get you through group content at max level..the SOD progression link on this sites front page has the tasks/missions breakdown. You need not do any other theme to get the J5 merc upgrade.
For a shaman, AC will come with gear as you progress but you can do as you like to fit for your playstyle. I would prioritize "Wisdom"(mana pool) because the shaman usually is a busy caster in group.Though you could divert some free ability points to "stamina" for HP pool increase and/or "agility" which affects melee avoidance and AC.

Either way you choose, the difference re starting stats will diminish to near irrelevance with the power of stats on gear as you pass level 75, so there are no negative consequences later on.

With defiant gear, assuming you are not starting on the Time locked progression servers, you don't have to worry much about stats. I would put more starting points into wisdom and make sure your agility is above 75. (Forget what ogres start at.) When you get canni in the 40's its nice to have those hp from stam but in the early levels, all 5 hours of play time...) manna is important.

Read then re read the sticky threads about coming back to game and the "did you know...".
Read ythers excellent work on the wiki boards. Alchemy is changed, so look at eqtraders.

Good luck hope you have many hours enjoyment.

After level 50 solo, look at experience per hour vs fighting higher cons. You get more xp over time by slaying light blues vs trying to hunt dark blues. Be mindful about what expansion you are hunting in to. Kunark mobs seem to have less hps than Luclin mobs. I can kill 2 light blue mobs in Mines of Nurga vs 1 dark blue mob in Maidens Eye. More kills more xp.

Defiant gear is the way to go now days. Load up and get ready to have a fun time mowing down mobs!

Good Hunting

Hello all,
I also just came back to EQ. I have a level 66 shaman with about 650 AA. My main was level max at level 70, so I have been gone a bit. I would love to continue to play the shaman since I love being a support type player.
Now for my questions.
Should I try and get some of the new "required" AA's now with a merc before he becomes less effective, if I have to solo? Or should I try and get levels, then try to get AA'?
Is a Sony store bought mount worth it? I have read that the added HP's/mana/ etc isn't worth the slot usage. But for solo is it?
I have looked hard for an updated list for the new "most required" AA's and yet to find a clean list. Does anyone have a link?
I was planning on sitting in "the wall of slaughter" for soloing. Is there any other good spots?
Thanks.

To a grouping shammy HP's are king, this allows you much more canni-room.

That said, you sound like you will be mostly solo, so go for a good mix of stamina, hp and ac. Get a merc to beat down the mobs as you dot and beat on 'em, as was mentioned.

You can always put them away and invite groups together...or join groups... or play them in smaller groups... the possibilities are outrageously fun. (sorry I am stilted)

Good luck and enjoy ;-)
