Average age of EQ players?Follow

#77 Dec 16 2012 at 6:00 PM Rating: Good
35 here, playing since a month before college graduation in 1999. I created Anaksuaman on Bristlebane the day before graduation, then didn't really have time to play until a few weeks after. I recall being relatively young even then compared to some of my friends back then, so I imagine most would be in their 40s through 60s by now.

Ok since there's some statistician in my blood...

I did a quick analysis of these posts and it looks like 31 people reported their age. (I had to ballpark a couple that were coy about exactness!) The average age is 42 and the median is 43. Median means the middle of a list of numbers. The mode (most common number) is 48.

The range is 22 to 69. The distribution looks like this (feel free to check my work!)

22 22 23 24 25 27 29 31 31 35 35 40 40 42 42 43 44 45 45 47 48 48 48 51 52 54 56 58 60 63 69

I know there are plenty of "older" players in EQ (me being one of them) but I didn't expect the average to be as high as 42. Of course, this is hardly a scientific sample and EQ players that regularly visit Allakhazam AND are inclined to post on forums would tend to be an older crowd, I suspect.

I would think an average player age in the 40s would be received with mixed feelings by Sony. The good news for them is that an older crowd would tend to have more money and therefore have more to spend on their entertainment. The bad news is most companies that market "general" entertainment like to see younger people in their customer base because it helps ensure future growth. Of course, 42 is hardly "old" and a 40-ish person has several decades of "entertainment pursuit" in their future, not to mention they probably remain on the upward path in terms of work advancement, pay increases and growth in disposable income. Plus as people age they tend to cut back on outdoor activities like rock climbing and scuba diving and be more inclined to enjoy activities virtually.... such as in a computer game!

Comments?

And anyone "passing thru" this thread please DO post your age! The bigger the sample the better!

I think you're exactly right with the average age being more representative of those that post here as opposed to those in game. But the average in game may not be so far off. I frequently see chatter in General about how so-and-so started EQ as a teenager. Those teenagers are now 13 years older making them ~30 years old. EQ probably has little appeal to young gamers nowadays due to the dated graphics so the player population can do nothing but age.

An aging player base isn't terrible. Harley Davidson has the same issue to contend with but they still sell bikes.

edit: Here's hoping everyone has a very Happy New Year!
