and found this on the eq forums:

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/posts/list.m?topic_id=180219 (says the same thing)

You are correct and that is what is at the end of that link I posted it just doesn't say 9.0c anymore until you launch it.

Tnman, right click on the shortcut and run as admin. Any change there?

I had this error on a reinstall on a fresh system and the above link worked for me on win 7 x64 so I am not sure what your issue is then but I would recommend searching the EQ forums "by post date" to see if there are any other ideas out there.

You're correct. EQ needs DX 9.0c. You can install that on your computer alongside DX 10, and the game you launch will load the correct one it needs.

If your still getting problems,

A quick fix is to download the Direct X file alone: d3dx9_30.dll and extract/move the file to your Everquest folder or win/sys 32 folder...All of my accounts use that method ( in Everquest folder on 3 different computers with diff versions of DX) instead of d/loading another newer or backdated version of DX. I had the problem on 2 of my computers with DX10 when I initially loaded EQ on them. Same error message when starting the game...

Everquest on starting up, only searches for the file to allow any newer DX version to enable the video card to the game. For some reason the d3dx9_30.dll file is not included on all newer versions of DX like DX10.

I had downloaded the file free from DLL-files.com ,but the one file you need is available from other sites also.

Good luck.

Just allow it do do the default or make a folder on your desktop and put them there. It extracts the files to a temporary location so that it can then run the install. You can delete the folder after it is installed.

I don't think that's correct. If it's the patcher, it puts the files where it's located. If you put it on the desktop (not a short cut but actually on the desktop) then it will put all the EQ files there too.

Put the file in a new directory. Do not put it in c:\program flies. EQ has trouble running from there on certain operating systems. Make a new directory on your C drive called games or applications or whatever you want to call it. Under there, make an EQ directory. Then put the patcher file in there. One other thing, right click it and make sure it's set to run as administrator. You should be all set with that.

Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8109

When you hit download it might come up with a box that says save or run or something along those lines depending on what web browser you use. click save and let it save the file whereever the default is. after you hit yes or ok it should download the file and give you a run option. Run the program and it should pop up a installer for direct x9.0c. just hit ok to everything and let it install. that should be all you need to do.

As far as DirectX problem:
Download from here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

Save it somewhere easy to find (My Documents or Desktop for example). Right-click and Run as Administrator. Restart after complete if not prompted to. This should fix the problem.

If you're having problems after this, and it's not dx3d9_30.dll missing, then it's related to something else, and some more details would help. There are a number of issues with EQ and newer Windows versions (Vista, 7, etc.) but mostly have to do with security settings. One of the most common problems, is the game being installed in the program files x86 directory. It's often better to install it somewhere outside of that directory, like c:\games\eq as an example.

After getting it installed and working, you may need to change folder permissions in order to be able to install map files. The following link is for Vista, but Win7 should be very similar: http://www.vista4beginners.com/Change-permissions-take-ownership

Not talking about eq I'm talking about the directx installer which extracts the setup file to a temporary location.
