Worst expansion spell system ever. 14 expansions ago, and they haven't done it that way since, so I guess it was obvious to them as well.

I don't know... "no matter how far you have gone down the wrong road --turn back" is a lesson SOE has never learned?
-some (mostly sadistic) will say the research system implemented and retrofitted with TSS fixes spell acquisition issues in EQ. Play any game made since EQ and then go back to EQ it only makes the EQ design path seem more bizarre.
Simple fixes for old content spells:
-put a trade-in quest npc like the Kunark spell quests that function this way, for PoP
-put all "hard to obtain" 1-65 spells also on Ldon vendors.
-put all "hard to obtain" 50-70 spells on DoN vendors.
-put all spells onto caster mobs of the appropriate levels in old zones up to the era the spell was from (i.e., level 40s Velious spells would also drop off level 40s Velious mobs. Having them be more common on named or difficult mobs (i.e., seb jugs is a good example) makes sense.
-Load up TSS mobs with spells as vendor loot. Why invent new mob pancreas to sell for peanuts... just put spells and useful items from old content into newer stuff as the price point required. At least the spells stack...
-Put notrade versions of the spells on really goofy out of the way, possibly behind odd faction, vendors. This would be a nice in-lore way to make some old stuff matter again.
I'm sure there is more possibilities instead of "pay a researcher" or "learn to love research" :)
