Seasons greetings,
A tank class such as SK or Paladin might be for you. With a hybrid tank and merc you have a better chance of winning your own loot from named with the tank class. Though dps might be lacking for current content if you solo/molo with no dps class in the group. Three-four years ago I added an SK to make progression possible with my Necro main and Shammy(3 box)and have never looked back since.

Good luck.

Awsome tyvm, aye i was looking into sk and even tho there pets are alot level down compared to necro getting there pets on par, still nice to have a pet for any extra dps with my sk and merc healer even tho im not much a pet class player, i wont turn down a pet even the pet is low level, as stated still extra dps. Pally class checked out and looks nice to, still doing more research on the class but im looking more and more toward the sk, now i did try a shaman, its not that bad of a class to me just really not sure if its for me but they do have alot of great benefits just not sure how they compare to sk and pally so ill keep searching more and mor on all 3 classes to see pros and cons that can solo ( easy, fast, efficient )

I apprediate all the input, i do have to say so far my exp in game and here on forums chat has been 100% awsome an very nice helpfulness tyvm :):):)

You could also try a Shaman with a Merc tank. The slow makes them a lot more livable and they can grab aggro from you. You must use the HOT spells on the tank, otherwise you can use up a lot of manna.

SK can solo anything that is soloable, molo all which is moloable, and are a very good class to play in the solo game. However, their DPS is not very good so the fight will be long and they require a TON of AA and good gear to be able to do it. If you are in it for the long haul and don't mind putting a whole lot of time into your character then roll a SK. At lower levels they aren't that great but as you get to level 75+ with 1000+ AA they will start to amaze you.

SK pets are a manaless dot. Depending on what you are fighting you may not use them all the time (mobs with AEs, Damage shields, ripostes, etc).

Disclosure: I am a SK.

If you're low level, I would go with a Tank merc myself. Upto the 50s or low 60s, depending on zones you pick, they can solo most stuff without any help from you, even red cons. Healer mercs are pretty worthless till 40s when they get complete heal. Read the following thread for a more detailed explanation of this view of mercs: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=1&mid=1312843216120091891

You might also want to read the Merc Upgrade post at https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=1&mid=1312609276177414664 and the Merc wiki page at https://everquest.allakhazam.com/wiki/EQ:Mercenaries

As far as classes. Whatever is fun, which varies from person to person. Personally, I like melee / melee-hybrid classes, or ones that get into the melee action. Rangers fit my personality the best, as I like to explore, try to be a jack-of-all trades, and like the sneaky / hunter like aspects, although in EQ1, Rangers don't exploit the sneak / hunt as much as some other games. If you like to stay busy Bards and/or Enchanters are good choices. Bards are also very versatile. For tanks, SK are the most versatile, and get one of the game's best effects, Feign Death. Necromancers and Monks also get this effect. I can't really give strong points on playing the casters, as I haven't put much time or effort into playing those classes. Same with Paladin, but I did put some time into one, it just wasn't for me. Other than Pallies, I like all of the rest of the Hybrids: Rangers, Bards, SKs, and Beastlord. I also like all of the melee classes: Warrior, Rogue, Monk, and Berserker. Of these, Bard, SK, and Pally will be the best soloers, although Pally is often slower at killing normal mobs, they slaughter undead at higher levels.

From what you said you don't like, you probably wouldn't like Beastlord, Druid, or Wizard either, and may not like Enchanter. This leaves you with trying Bard, Berserker, Cleric, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Shadowknight, and Warrior.

I recommend just trying ones out, as you may not know until you play a class whether you like it or not. This is what happened to me with Shaman, which I assumed I wouldn't like, because I didn't really like Cleric or Druid (although boxing a Cleric is descently fun), but made one just to make potions, but couldn't stop at 25, because I like it so much. I think my Shaman has been stuck in the 60s for a while, 'cause I haven't gotten back around to leveling him again.

Hope this helps some.

I agree with lots that's already been said.

The game changes a lot post 60 so once you get there... getting there again is much faster. Don't be afraid to get quite a few classes into the 50s at least.

Tank mercs are super strong in lower content.

If you don't like casters you might want to avoid shaman, druid, cleric.

Beastlords are versatile as well (have versions of mana regen and slow, have a strong pet, have weak heals). I currently have a 55 beast which I just got a dps merc for and she's unstoppable in "appropriate level" content. I might have actually been better off with a tank merc so I could really push it (but I am newer to mercs and hardly playing that character...).

Beastlord would play fine with a healer merc too. Whereas shaman is more sit back and cast (thanks to powerful spells) beastlords really are built to fight right there with the pet (once upon a time playing pet cleric was popular for some, but I haven't seen that in years).

Any class you find fun is the best one though. Mercs make all of them soloable within most content. If you haver higher/harder content goals then you probably need to look beyond soloing anyways.

I have had success with a Paladin with tank merc. I never used aything else for a merc with him from level 1. (Currently 76/650aa)

SK had better DPS, true; I just like/love the fact that I can buff, heal, cure and blast the undead to smithereens all whilst doing modest to good DPS.

The lack of a gate spell for pallys is criminal, but that's another story.Smiley: tongue

I talked to a friend last night who played everquest for last 10 yrs, he brought up a few things that he thought was important for a person like me who loves to solo at my own pace and adventure around checking al the old places in the game and new places since changes. #1 having the Gate spell be best for me so when i travel long ways to places i dont have to spend hours running/mount all way back to a pok book portal, especially if in a dungeon, you work hard to get to the end to kill what you need too then now have to backtrack out if dont have a gate spel BUT when if you have the gate spell bamm you just gate back to your soulbound point in PoK #2 he talked to me about playing a necro or magician class so i have more to my advantage, a pet, yourself and a merc ( your very own 3 person grp/party) So he got with me with my magician and necro classes showed me that i wasnt playing the correct way to get the full advantage of my battles, so he tod me something about both classes, ideas of how to play them which i did not know when i was trying to play them befoe i talk to my friend lol. Now i love playing the necro and magician but atm i love the magician alot more than anything else now i know how to play one lol, TYVM everyone for your advice and help, im sre down the road i may have more questions but for now all is good, i wish my frind played more but he has moved onto ther mmo's but i know ill make friends here in eq and my friend that hep me last night is always a phone call away if i need advice or info f cant find it here :):):)

oh btw i checked out the SK class, looks very nice but i notice they dont get gate spell that disappointed to me BUT i may still try one tho, my friend was no help with me on SK since he never played a sk .

In today's game the gate ability isn't as important as it used to be. Gate pots are pretty cheap and there are a lot of other ways to get a gate like ability. You can also get an OT hammer https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=473 which will port you to The Overthere zone when it procs. Want to gate out? Just go up to a mob and hit it with this hammer and it ports you to the OT. THen take the PoK book which is like 300' away to POK. Simple to use and simple to get.

Gate potions are player made by shamans. Usually some for sale in the bazaar. EDIT: They're called Philter of Major Translocation but there are also ports to specific zone potions available as well.

The hammer weighs 25.5, which is the maximum any game item can weigh. WR stands for Weight Reduction. WR bags are rate as a percentage of weight reduction. 10% used to be the cheap and common bags, but today, it's not too hard to get 75% or better, even at low level via quests, and 1000% cost around 4,000 to 5,500 platinum either from players or from a merchant. The easiest high WR bag to get at low level is the Ore Hauler's Haversac from the quest Gnollish Tools which you can get at level 20, for a 75% WR bag. This would make the hammer weigh 25.5 * (100% - 75%) = 25.5 * 25% = 6.375 while carrying it in the bag.

You can buy a 100% WR from Marfen Binkdirple in Solusek's Eye (Sol A) who sells Bag of the Tinkerer's for 5250p +/- depending on Cha and Faction.

You can find most bags listed in the post at https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=1&mid=1274313531160609034

you can also click on "return home" before you login. So as long as your deep dungeon crawl ending is where you feel like logging for the night... no worries on travel.

Also, once you get to higher levels you can get the "origin" alternate advancement (AA) ability which is a gate-to-home-city ability.

How you like to fight is really the better way of trying to guess what class will be a nice fit.

Necros excel at solo kiting. Mages are better at letting the pet tank and dropping big nukes on the target. Necros don't really need a merc to do 98% of what a casual player would be doing ---I say this as a person that held off on buying the expac with mercs for 3 years since I didn't really see the advantage. Now that I have mercs... my necro lets the cleric buff and then suspends unless I am trying crazier things.

Mages and Necros are 2 great (if not the best) solo classes. Not as gear dependent to feel productive either (especially compared to melee types). However, if your (the OP) preferred playstyle is melee you won't be meleeing for xp much (Yeah I can tap-tank for AAxp in hotzones and melee on my necro, but that's more of an oddity of my current overpowered-at-level-71 status than a practical approach for necros). So it really comes down to how exactly do you want to play?

Mage class im begging to ike aot now that i know how toply it for my level range, i love the necro but i HATE kiting in all my mmo's i play so i stay away from casses that requires kiting to kil the mob, if my necro, myself and and a merc cant solo mbs without kiting then ill pass on the necro class lol sorry just cant stand playing a class that has to kite to mae my easy kills.

Shamans and druids can root/rot instead of kiting. Just saying. Mage is pretty awesome however.
