ok i made my shaman and got myself a merc tank, here is my two questions.

#1 Is there a way to make your merc tank attack a mob you target without you doing anything to the target first, like tell your merc tank to attqck, like necro's and mag's have a pet attack button?

#2 When i buff my merc tank with all my buffs i have, is there a way to see the buffs on my merc tank so i know what buffs runs out of time ect...?

Merc tanks will only attack a mob that has aggro. I do not believe there is a merc attack key as there is for pets.

Expand the merc box window and you should be able to see the buffs on it. Click and drag when you have the arrow keys on it. I can see almost all buffs on my merc, or at least I could when I was still playing.

I'd stretch the merc window also, but if you can't figure it out, you can always use the Target window and expand it. Below the target will be a target's target and below that will be the buffs on your target. If you don't have the Leadership AA, it will only show for group members, including your merc, but with the LAA, and 3 people in the group, mercs included, you can see NPC's buffs.

EDIT: Make sure the windows aren't locked (right-click on them if context menus is turned on in Options (Alt+O)).

I was searching this forum for a thread I began when I first acquired my merc, but for some reason can't find it. At any rate, the advice I was given was that learning how to use the settings on your merc is very important. I am a druid with a tank merc and iirc there is an "aggressive" and a "passive" setting. 99% of the time I use aggressive. It is a "bit" like the tank attacking a mob without me doing anything, but not in the pet type sense. You can't target a mob and then send the tank in, but if I get hit by a mob that appeared out of nowhere, for example, my tank is on it often before I know I got hit...lol. As a caster, I often stand at a distance from my targeted mob, cast some type of low-aggro spell and my tank rushes in while I stand back and either heal my merc or DoT, nuke, debuff, etc. That's about the closest we can get with mercs to your question.

I use the passive mode when I want to pull a mob away from other mobs. If I keep my tank on aggressive mode, he runs in and starts fighting after I cast, which can attract the attention of nearby mobs. (Thinking here of my experiences in Bastion of Thunder.) In that case, I put my merc on passive so it basically follows me around doing nothing, cast whatever on the mob (I have found that a GREAT spell to cast that doesn't generally create aggro from other mobs is the "Nullify/Cancel Magic" line. My Pally uses that in combination with the Calm spell to single pull from a group), pull the mob where I want it, then switch my merc back to aggressive so he can begin tanking.

Something I didn't realize was a GREAT help until recently is to use the group roles and mark yourself main assist. For awhile I was using a rogue merc with my pally before I switched to a wizard and, even set on aggressive mode, they often seemed "confused" - ie. they stood around and watched me get beat up. After talking to a friend who told me to make sure to set myself as main assist (I also set myself as main tank on the pally-main puller on the druid) so the merc knows who to assist - I don't have that issue any longer.

Hope that helps a bit :)

ok i got one if my toons to lvl 21, my magician and have a tier 1 Jman healer, up keep every 15 mins is 3 plat, now since im new to the the game im most of time keep up paying that 3 plat since aot of loot that been dropping for me by time i go sell i net around 35-60 plat total s 90% time np keeping up with the plat if i get low i suspend the merc and farm low mobs to get plat up alot higher faster.

Now this is what i dont understand my friend has his magician to lvl 23 he has a apprentence 2 merc confidence medum healer his up keep is around 5 gold, and NO his healer pet doesnt run away on him when he is doing multiple mobs at once , he isnt having any problems

Im still confused in the differencce of the app mercs tier 1-5 EXCEPT the cost up keep is cheaper than the Jman tier 1, a few people in game telling me dont waiste your time on app mercs no matter there tier 1 or using tier 5, well there upkeep is way cheaper than the jman tier 1 that also has a confidence LOW. As Apprencice merc 1 is confidence low, tier 2 is medium, tier 3 medium tier 4 high and tier 5 is high, so how does a Jman tier 1 confidence low better than a app merc tier 2 confidence medium, tier 3 medium, tier 4 high and tier 5 high?????

Yes i checked out all the info on here about mercs and checked the merc site on allkhazam that sony posted when mercs first came out, I do not undestand all that stuff, i have hard time understanding things due to my disabilty, BUT im now using a app 2 healer merc and loving the low cost upkeep compared to the jman tier 1 costing me more plat, im quessing the apprentice mercs may not have all the buffs than a jman tier 1 but my app healer i got only to help assist with healing nothing else till i get way much higher and then try to figure out the Jman tier 1, tier 2, tier 3, tier 4, tier 5 or they called ranks which i dont undrstand ithat part iether too, i read your post and link, YTHER,, but i just couldnt understand all you said about the merc, yes i do know how to cnntrol them depending on my playstyle, mobs ect.. thats not the problem i just cant comprehand the diff between a Jman tier 1 Low healer with my lvl 20 magiavn that costing me 3 plat to upkeep compared to now using app tier 2 medium healer. I trirft research more on the mercs for like mercs for dummies 101 rofl cause that the only way i can understand all that merc lingo like missions arc ect..... that has no menaing ot my mind i cant understand or comprehand., sorry

I honestly don't understand all the particulars re: the differences in the tiers of mercs either. I began using the highest tier-whatever tank merc for my druid and was quite happy with it for months, then I read somewhere to be sure to get a Journeyman level merc. I thought the highest tier merc I had was better than a Journeyman level just due to the name; however, when I looked at the cost of the Jman merc, both in price and upkeep, I was stunned at the difference.

I decided to get a Jman merc, based on what I had read. The Jman tank for my level 70ish (at the time) druid was an amazing difference from the other merc. It could mow down mobs much more quickly and could take more of a beating. I was happy with the former merc, but astounded at the difference with the Jman.

At your level, honestly, it may not make too much difference. As I said, I was happy with my Tier merc before I knew about the Jman. My suggestion would be to use the lower priced one if it works for you. Sometimes the precise specifics of things in EQ makes my head hurt - that's when I remember I'm playing EQ for fun and relaxation.

Oh, also - since we can now purchase an additional merc "slot" - if you still have the Jman merc, you could keep it, purchase one of the lower-priced ones and use it unless & until you come across an area you need the Jman. Just another thought. Hope that helps a bit.

I have always chosen a T1 Jman from lvl 1. Since price of upkeep scales with level, if you run a little short on plat, just go farm stuff that drops decent saleable stuff at your level then go back to questing.

I agree with you Friar Bijou, i been starting to do that on one of my lvl 20 toons, that is a SUPER idea, thank you very much and by far Jman 1 is a lot better, ive been trying all the app merc tiers 1-5 of each class compared to the mobs my lvl or 1 level above me ocasionally a red con and i have to say they did not compared up to a jman tier 1, so now on im always going to stick with jmen mercs
