i have this spell Dark pact lvl 6 (takes away your hitpoints to regen your mana, im level 16 atm and i keep casting this over and over and all i get is message saying this spell did not take hold, my alteration is atm good so thats not the problem, it does not require anything to consume so no problem there but it just will not take hold, so why is it not working and yes i have low mana when i try to use this so thats not the problem?

oh also i went to my guidmaster and all my spells ( alteration, channeling, conjuration ect...) is all iether above average or good so those no problems.

That message means you have a better buff that is blocking it. Most likely an Enchanter clarity or a clarity potion. See the following for a list of blocking spells: http://lucy.allakhazam.com/stacking.html?id=641&source=Live

To understand how to read the basics of Alla spell data, look at http://eq.zam.com/wiki/EQ:Spell_Data -- It also explains sticking and stacking to some degree with a better post explaining linked at the bottom of the page.

Yther Ore.

Dark pact is in the lich line. Most of the time Lich line is better than buffs others can give you. You've encountered one of the gaps (with clarity being better). The second gap is in the 40s and only a couple of levels wide when you can get KEI.

After that, I'm not sure if there is any more gaps.

Necros traditionally piled on the HP and HP regen gear to counteract the negative of this spell by the way. With defiant gear and cheap baz gear I haven't lost HP to lich in years. I am only level 71 though so maybe I'll get into a harder chewing (on me) lich spell soon.

You take less of a loss when sitting. This is why aggro kiting become the method of choice for necros (when regens weren't so easy to stack on with gear):

-tag the mob with snare
-keep you distance from mob
-keep piling on your damage over time spells. Ideally mem them in an order so they wear off in recasting order (as some mobs will need 2 or more cycles of dots to kill).
-while dots are ticking away damage, yet not worn off to need recasting you are far away from the mob and sit down. Therefore you are regenning more HP/mana while mob is thinking "you dare sit down while I am in pain? AHHHH!" and tries to chase you down.

If you can stand doing this on a mount (the freebie fast ones compell me to do it sometimes, though I prefer running myself) it is more efficient mana/hp wise.

This method is what allows necros to kill with very little true downtime, providing they choose camps suited to the skillset.

minor sidenote:

The lack of regen and xp nerf on TLP made the advantages of this method minimal (killing yellows/reds is pointless if they don't give more xp than dark blues) since regens remain hard to get there and hp/mana on gear is so low my necro spent tons of time sitting and medding. TLP necros dot cycle could kill a dark blue pretty good, but then I'd be out of mana and need 5-8 minutes to regen. Balancing lich with lifetaps helps a bit there, but not fun for me. By PoP it will even out a fair bit on progression though --since by then in game history aggro kiting was well-entrenched (it wasn't originally forseen as a tactic by the devs. They saw fearing and root-rotting).
