Never played EQ before? Welcome and I haven't met a true new-to-the-game person in a long time.
Suggestions...hmmmmm. You didn't mention your class - doing some reading on that class on the forums and how to play it would be one of my first. Do the quests in your starting area to start getting some coin and equipment. A bit later on hire a mercenary, the type depends on your class.

As most people would recommend, and paraphrasing Jonwin, read the stickied new and returning players thread at the top of the forums, then reread it, and read it again. :) Server would help get specific, as the TLP (Time-Locke Progression) servers are a bit different strategy / route, as is the PvP (Player vs. Player) Zek server, an the Roleplaying Firiona Vie server. Class also would help give some specific information / advice.
If a normal blue (PvE, Player vs. Enemy) server, it's fairly straightforward to start. Do the Tutorial (button on the character select screen to login there, if under around 13th level). After it, (around 10-12th level), and after getting some gear there via drops and quests, you can leave through the tunnel to zone to Crescent Reach which is a hot zone (temporary experience bonus zone) at the moment. It has lots of quests and drops to upgrade your tutorial gear. By then you may have specific questions which can be answered in detail here on the forums.
For now though, that's about it, other than I'll edit in some links to EQ dictionaries and glossaries and such, if you're unfamiliar with MMO terminology, and EQ specific terms.

1. Don't be afraid to spend extra time in the tutorial looting barrels and building up some cash. Crescent Reach begins a levelling/quest trail that will take you to level 75 pretty efficiently. Currently most of this trail is hotzoned for extra experience too (so there will even be others in the zones).
2. Give a few classes a try. You'll get the basic play mechanics for soloing by about level 20 (if you don't use mercenaries) which for some classes is "I can't solo". Most classes really solidify after 55 or even 65 once the real serious alternate advancement abilities (AA) kick in.
3. In today's game it is nothing to abandon a level 75 character with few AA and start over. Anything below that is easily replaced (as painful as that is to say as a player with no characters over level 75).
4. This games is insanely vast. You can spend years doing almost no levelling. You can spend weeks on end grinding experience, you can race to level up and mostly raid. Do whatever you enjoy... there is no must-do playstyle.
Read the sticky posts at the top of the forum, then reread them, then play for a few hours and read them a third time. Ask for help in game, Don't do trade skills until you find yourself enjoying the game, or needing items you can make.

In my opinion, and maybe due to doing so many research papers, I believe giving credit is very important. Sometimes in general conversations, and rarely on forums, I'll mention that I heard or what not without giving specific names for the credit, but at least being sure to note it wasn't originally from me, and hoping someone who remembers the source will mention it.
