What are you going to be soloing and how? Undead and using nukes and dots? Normal mobs and letting them die on DS and Reverse DS, while HoTing yourself? Some other mob / tactic?

Most of your spells will be alteration, including rezzes, heals, hots, cures, pacifies, fears, transport, and some others. Primarily buffs are abjuration; nukes, stuns, undead dots are evocation; and summon spells are conjuration. Divination is miscellaneous sense type spells.

You definitely don't want Divination or Conjuration, and it's unlikely you'd want Abjuration unless you were going to be a buff box. So your pick is Alteration (about 75% or more of your spells), or Evocation. Personally, I'd go with Alteration no matter how I played, since heals are your primary focus, and making them better only improves your performance, and gives the benefit to the widest range of spells.

There is no real alternative. Alteration. Later on use aa points if you want a second one.

A cleric's job is to heal, and buff. Alteration does taht, saves manna, and reduces your fizz chance.

1hb and shield are weapons for the long run as well. My 78 clr does have a 2hb skill of 200 however. Mostly from groups when I wasnt healing. )

Fizzling a nuke will rarely kill you.

Fizzling heals will.

Fizzling and running oom in the group game will get you known for the wrong reasons.

The spec question is a good one, but most classes truly don't have a debate if you concede the primary role expected of you and the weight of the spell balance as done by the devs.

So I agree completely with Jonwin and Yther, and your choice.

There is a choice, I did a lot of soloing with my cleric up to the lower 40s back when the level cap was 60. So its been awhile so you might double check to see if this is still possible. Due to soloing and casting damage spells my cleric specialized in evocation. There were several levels of the spell(smite) that I loaded all of on my spell gems and would chain cast them, so to speak. I found at level 40 or so it seemed that soloing a cleric was just not worth it to me anymore but I needed my specialty in alteration. So I did this... https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=711
Make !!!SURE!!! you cast nothing but heal spells after you do this so your alteration is the FIRST skill to hit 50. Now you got a heal bot.

aye i specc alteration and with aa's i'll use my 2nd spec choice as evocation, atm im lvl 41 and using jt merc tank, we both just plowing thru red cons with np, but i also have awesome gear, all my stats are maxed out for my level, all my spell skills are maxed out as well, and so is 1h blunt, dodge, offense and defense maxed out. I am having the most fun i ever had in an mmo and i been playing mmo's back to the beggining of when computers came out and started playng M U D D over the old baud system, some of you youngsters will not know about the early days of M U D D ( first mmo type game) ask your parents to explain them to you, rofl, the good old early days of computer online playing, M U D D way it was and started the mmo's, good old late 1979-1980's and ever since then i played every single mmo ever made, yes im old, im disable and homebound so my world is online gamming, but i have to say Everquest is a BLAST :)

Agreed kraetor, EQ was my first MMO and I loved it right from the start. Since then I tried EQ2, WoW and several other popular ones and it just seems like none come close. Still tossing around the idea of returning to the game. Easy to see this game will never die but can't for the life of me figure out why SoE doesn't put more effort into attracting more new blood. I have my doubts that the F2P promotion will have a very big effect but hope I'm wrong.

Have priests always spec'd and I just don't remember it or is this something new?

I don't think I ever played a WIS caster past 20 and that was years ago.

Yes they do, the first skill to reach 50 will be the specialization skill and for the cleric that's usually alteration for the healing spells. Guess the respec quest is repeatable though, for some reason I was thinking it was a one time deal. That's a good thing though, allowing a little more forgiveness on a character build.

I'm absolutely sure you're correct. It's been a long time since I played and, for whatever reason, I always associated spec'ing with INT casters.

Wis casters get it later at 30 instead of 20 for Int casters, maybe why you didn't remember.

That could be. Also, I guess there was less threads about what a cleric should spec in vs. a mage or necro.
