hi eveyone, i ben reading on paladin class forums and alot of post, well 95% is like 2004-2009 i read that paladins has loswets dps of sk and war, since all the changes to th game, revamps ect... is this still true on paladins being bad n killing non undead mobs or should my best bet is go shadowknight?

Warrior class has no interest t me, just pally or sk, ill be soloing with healer merc, so please be very honest with me which is betterroute to go pally or sk? Thank you very much for your time and advice and hope to hear from you all

Tanking - Both are very solid tanks at upper levels and both are relatively weak at lower levels.
Travel - Sk's offer the ability to go pretty much anywhere in the game with invis, invis to undead and Feign Death.
Pulling - Sk's are better pullers overall but if the mobs are lullable then it's pretty even.
DPS - SK's will likely get the edge here but it's really not significant and there are a lot of undead in EQ at all levels of play.
Healing - Both have very good passive and active healing abilities, sk's through lifetaps and reverse damage shields and pallys through their heal procs
Mitigation - against stunnable mobs a pally will take virtually no damage. Sk will take virtually no damage if they have their epic click running.
Agro - Both top notch agro generation

I'd give a slight edge overall to the SK based mostly on travel ability.

I can't speak for SKs much, but owning a pally as my main I do feel that I do have the lowest dps vs the other tanks.

But at that cost, you do get to have skills such as Lay on Hands, Divine Aura, Stuns, AA Proc Heals, you're pretty much a beast against undead once you have maxed slay undead/weapon affinity.

I know its an underused class, probably the least used imo, but it does come with great reason.

I just came back admittedly, so I'm not the best defender of Pallies, but as long as you can find some undead and have a healer merc, you're okay for soloing.

I realize I'm coming in late to this dance and you chose a SK, but in case you want a Paladin alt...

...a Paladin was my first created character back in 1999 when I really didn't know ANYTHING about the game/MMORPGs. I enjoy soloing so after about level 26 I created a Druid who was one of the best soloing classes back in the day. The Druid is my main, but when I returned to the game after an absence of about 3+ years and saw the mercs, I dusted off my Pally and am enjoying playing her again. I began with a Rogue merc for dps but several of my guildies recommended using a wizard and the difference is amazing!!!!

As a Pally (now level 60), I figure I can keep myself "spot-healed" and keep healing potions available.

Just my 2c on the topic. Smiley: smile

Play both. Though I have to say I retired Jonwin when I stopped playing 2 accounts, and I had also tapered off playing Winjon the paladin on my second account. Paladins do not have feign death, but rooting and stunning a mob can be effective in making a withdrawel. Truth be told now, I stopped worrying about deaths quite a while back.

The Pally Lay on Hands is helpful if a fight would be "doable" with just a bit more time and, yes, the rooting and bashing/stun helps a lot. However, now using a merc, having time to make a getaway is a bit easier, although not so much on the Pally since I use a wizard.

I'm with you though - I really don't worry much about deaths.

You've made your decision evidently and it's the right one.

The usefulness of paladins have been hurt a lot by the "improvements" made in recent years to make the game more palatable to Wow-type players and to enhance solo-ability. The paladin 90% rez used to be very valuable back before mercs and the corpse summoning NPCs in the guild lobby. Pally stuns have their uses (altho EQ tends to make a lot of mobs unstunnable) and LoH has situational value but none of this comes close to the utilities provided by an SK. The only effective time a paladin has notable dps is against undead and there are just not enough undead mobs in the game to make this really a significant ability, IMO.

I'm sure other players, especially those who are highly invested in a paladin, would argue differently. Just consider, though, well-geared highly-AA'd shadowknights can solo practically any mob in the game that CAN be solo'd. That can hardly be said of paladins. And in group or raid situations, again with the exception MAYBE of some highly specialized encounters, SKs (and warriors) have it all over paladins.

Heck, I'd love to hear some reasoned arguments in favor of pallies---enlighten me...anyone?

There are all different types of players in EQ as well as play styles. I'm a casual player who enjoys the journey instead of racing to the "end game." My preferred play style is solo or with one or two friends. I'm allergic to raids and statistics about what weapon has the best whatevermabobs make my eyes blur and head spin.

When I first began EQ in 1999 I knew nothing about MMORPGs so I read the descriptions of the various races and classes. I liked the idea of playing an elf and, since there was a choice, of course I wanted to be a "high" one - not having the slightest idea what that meant; it just sounded good. lol

After reading the classes available to a High Elf I chose Paladin solely because the description was close to my RL belief system. Again, I had no earthly idea what a Paladin did really, nor the pluses/minuses of playing one. I just felt "sympatico" with the class.

Around level 26 when my Paladin was crawling along, weighted down by her heavy armor and extraneous coin and spending a small fortunes on SoWs, I created a Woodelf Druid who became my main.

Fast forward to the present. I am very satisfied with my two EQ characters and have never regretted either choice. The Druid is now level 80 and working on AAs. The Paladin is level 60 and just obtained her first Holy Steed.

I play what I enjoy and would personally never choose a race/class solely based on how "powerful" it is. Your mileage may vary. Smiley: wink

Interesting and worthwhile comments. I started EQ in 1999 and I "hung out" with a couple of paladins quite a bit in our early days. We'd duo and explore creepy dungeons like Unrest, Dalnir, Kaesora and Nurga and then some higher level dungeons. When the sh*t the fan the ultimate escape was my druid's evac spell but the pally was the first line of defense and between their stuns, LoH, heals and overall fighting qualities we were victorious against many packs of nasty mobs which frequently outnumbered us greatly. So I have fond memories of the fighting skill, boldness, bravery, nobility and tenacity of the Everquest paladin.

And certainly in terms of RP and game lore any "good" player is gonna want to hang on with a pally over an SK any day! ;)

I really appreciate your reply, Sippin. My main point was to play however it makes one happy. Your comments on your early days in EQ brought back fond memories. Smiley: smile
