Narrowed my list down but cant decide!Follow

Coming back after quitting when Luclin was "it" and killed Emp. I'm starting fresh wtih a friend, havent decided if I will eventually want to raid or not yet. Im stuck between 4 classes. Ranger, Necro, Bard, and SK. I'm wanting to come back to EQ for the grouping appeal so If any of these never get groups I'd like to know. I played a pally back in the day and I remember being kinda the guy to sit in back and just w/e. Bard always appealed to me but I don't know if I wanna be swayed away from doing decent DPS. Ranger sounds fun especially if what Im reading about them being badass with swords is true. SK always seemed like the outcast but theyre evil look, evil looking epic weapon, and abilities appealed to me tho i never tried one. Necro i played a bit and they always seemed pretty godly. Massive regen and a badass pet. DO they still go into skele/spec form? I just cant decide!

I have not been back long but my advice is play them all to about 55. It dont take long to hit 55 these days.

Edited based on better advice.

Getting groups is a lot more about the player than it is about the class played. If your style is "kinda the guy to sit in back and just w/e" then you won't get groups and you'd be better off with a necro.
All the classes you picked are effective soloers/moloers and rangers aren't anymore badass with swords than any other dps class. Rangers being hybrids need a lot of aa's and need to weave in spells to be effective DPS toons but at high level (81+) are absolutely godly at getting aa's via headshot. A really skilled and decently geared SK can get AA's at nearly the same rate but not everyone is skilled enough.
Ultimately you can try out each of them to level 60 or so and decide from there.
Be proactive in making groups too, don't just spam the general channel or sit with your /LFG flag up.

First off, throw away your preconceived ideas since your information is probably woefully out of date. I say that based on your comment about rangers being 'badass with swords' and SKs being 'outcasts'. That may have been the case back when the AA system was new (when you last played) but that is by no means the case today.

Today, the best grouping tank class is the Shadowknight. That's not to say the Paladin or Warrior "suck". They do not. But the SK's abilities and development options make for a very versatile class that can perform several roles that groups tend to value highly (tank and puller being the most obvious).

Bard is a class that is easy to play but damn hard to play well. Many people use boxed alt bards with a single playlist (song sequence) because the class is such an effective force multiplier. However, while boxing the class is okay and gets decent results, playing the class actively requires a lot of attention. Since Bards can typically do so much and fill so many roles, your song lineup will be extremely important. But if raiding is even a consideration, this is probably the class you want to play. You can never have too many Bards.

Rangers are extremely versatile and work well in solo, group, and raiding environments. That's been the case for years so the problem you may run into is one of overpopulation. It's a great class and everyone knows it so everyone has one (or so it seems).

Necros are very powerful, still. The only problem I think Necros might have is their burst damage doesn't really get good until later in life (70+). Burst is important in groups since many mobs won't live long enough to make dots very efficient. Pre-75ish, the game has inflated to such a degree that group fights that were lengthy when they were new (say, mobs in Crystallos) are no longer so the power of a Necro bleeds away as the fights get shorter and shorter.

Here's the bottom line. Follow Touchin's advice and play them all to 55 (not 50 since you don't get many of your better tools by then) or so then pick the one that's most fun to you. Good guilds recruit PEOPLE, not classes (because a good player is a good player regardless of what class they're playing and modern MMO raid forces need good players more than anything else) so your raiding life shouldn't totally depend on what class you are. Play what you enjoy most and everything else will fall into place.

I made a bard to start with because it was something I always wanted to play back in the day. My style of play was never sit back and hang it just seemed to be the way Pally was treated back in my days. I'm gonna play an SK as well, just because I was always intrigued by them. Ill play both and see which i like more to keep as a main but right now bard has been a ton of fun.

If you have the character slots for it (or you just wanna try on different servers), you can try each one out in the tutorial and then beyond into Crescent reach to get the feel. Most classes start "coming into their own" around mid to late 30's, and then again in the late 50's to early 60's. But it should be easy enough to level a few starter toons to see what you like before taking any of them into the 70's+. And it is a lot of fun too.
