I wonder which pet would provide the most damage in a group setting? I am learning towards either water pet for backstab, or monster summoning pet?

Water would be the most damage but in order to backstab you'll have to spend time positioning it. Personally i'd just stick with the air pet, stuns will help mitigate incoming dps to your tank and will allow you to focus on your DPS which is miles ahead of any pet you have.

I remember reading back in the day (when PoP was new), the low 60s Monster Summoning (V I think it was) was a good pet (probably the best), but that was short-lived.

As a tank, I prefer the Air pet for the stuns, they lower the mobs dps, help interrupt spells, can tank if need be, and are ok DPS. If you get good at positioning the Water pet would probably be better for a high dps, low mob difficulty group, but in general, I'm with Cilrail and say Air pet. Octavia's mage primarily uses the Air pet as well for both soloing and grouping.

I've been using my water pet at 62 since it's the highest one I have and have noticed that it will backstab the mob even when it is in front.

I was going to say exactly what Jaid said. I have never had to do any work "positioning" my water pet. Perhaps this is a game mechanic that has changed or something. Fact of the matter is the water pet is your best pet dps-wise in an end game group where you don't have any other concerns (like back up tanking in a pinch, helping to mitigate damage, etc.). If you are looking for the most damage you can do, use a water pet. It is also a not insignificant portion of your damage, contrary to one point made. That is why it is so important to tie pets to their masters for parsing purposes.
