Returning after 10 years away, a friend and myself just got up to level 65 and want to work on AA's for a while so will go to 100% AA exp and just have fun in some of the zones we like.

We have Merc's and I "kind of" understand the progression to level them up, my impression is at 65 we might be able to do the LVL 2 progression but would need to wait until we get higher lvl to do the others...

So with that understanding, would it be better if we stayed with the lvl 5 Apprentice mercs with high confidence or have a lvl 1 (or 2) Journeyman merc with low confidence. We usually are pulling lower con mobs, and many times are fighting a number of them at 1 time...money does not seem to be a big issue, don't have a clue about later levels but we have more plat than we can spend atm...

I have read what I coudl find on merc, and if what I want to know is somewhere I missed, please direct me that way :)

I've been using the Journeyman merc, even though he's only rank one. I've had as many as 5 blues in a fight and haven't had him run off (though I have had times where I truly get swarmed and he runs, but I'm usually running by that time too).

Always, always, always, pick the journeyman mercs. They're simply better in every aspect.

Thank you! Good to know, thank you for the quick replies!

Oh, how hard is it to do the progressions? Just wait till we get higher?

I always use app5 because they are less likely to run and they cost half as much to keep up. My highest toon is 74 and haven't ran into any issues. I do hear at higher lvl its about impossible to do anything with APP mercs though.

Even a rank one Journeyman will run less than an apprentice 5. I have a friend who has the same misunderstanding. The app 5 may say high confidence while the J1 says low, but that "low" is higher than the app5's "high". Think of it a different way: The apprentice is just that, an apprentice learning his trade. The journeyman has been around the block a few times. It is as the poster above said, the journeyman merc is superior in every single way possible to an apprentice, which is why they cost more.

Is this true for Healer mercs as well? I just switched to Gold, and dismissed my long time and ever faithful App T5 healer to get a Journeyman T1. The thing is, she always see to be OOM when fighting, no matter what stance she's in. My App T5 seemed to be able to take on 5 to 7 light blues without running OOM, but this new journeyman will run from 100% to OOM on only two light blues. I am a 78 warrior with 600 AA's, good defensive AA's, and almost always go out hunting fully buffed from GL, so it's not like she's just burning tons of mana because I'm getting hit too much. And I am very good at keeping aggro off of her, so she's not burning it healing herself. Any ideas why she seems to burn mana faster than my App T5?

Hotkey the passive key from merc menu, also hotkey say efficient for cleric merc. You can learn to control them as they are very inefficient on there on. Let them cast there hot on ya and a regular heal as needed then press passive key. Press efficient again if needed. Try to keep them passive after the fight, as they will burn mana healing you even when u are like 98 % health Smiley: lol

J1 merc is a lot better than A5. Keep the merc passive on the pull, when they come in it is rare for a J1 to run

Good Hunting !

I'm playing 2 mages, one silver, one gold. Both L67 and both have cleric mercs.

The J1 gold merc is always running oom way faster than the A5 silver. I assume the higher tier one is casting bigger heals and buffs but I can't say I have really noticed. The difference is huge though, and I have been tempted to go back to the A5 on each of them.

Regarding the spells, at that level the healer mercs should be casting the same spells as the Tiered system starts at level 71.

For the mana issue, are both healers set to the same healing setting? I know that App. healers have fewer setting options. If the J1 merc is on Reactive, then yes, it will burn through the mana more quickly.
