Something I have been seeing alot is people picking spots and going AFK with a tank merc and having the merc basically solo mobs for them. Is this something that players are allowed to do, or something that could lead to a ban??

I have a couple ideas about this...
1) If you can go afk and your merc can kill it alone, how much xp can you be getting? even adding a pet, or a group of 3 players with 3 mercs and 3 pets...minimal xp.
2) If you are leaving for quite awhile, say a round of 3-5 mobs, they are probably only going to respawn every 15-20 minutes or so, again how much xp can really be had?

So, are they hurting the game? probably not.
Are they hurting your game play? again, probably not.

More than likely, the player went afk, with something real-life that had to be done and didn't expect to be gone as long as they were.

If you can find a GM on...if they have the time to investigate...they may boot the player from the game, as it does violate certain rules of conduct in the tos agreement that you have to agree to every time you log in.

The main place I see this happening alot if The Hole right outside of the Guardian of the Seal's room. Stuff does respawn fairly quickly and I imagine going AFK there for say 8 hours (long enough for a work or school day) could rank up a few AA's (more than if you didn't do it).

I have seen it in the Hole, also....mobs do respawn quickly, and you have some wanderers there. A monk took care of it himself, by pulling a huge train then FDing right at the AFKers...worked for me...Smiley: wink

I wish i could find the thread but GMs have said its perfectly OK for now for them to do it. Its pretty common especially in the hole. Honestly it just dont seem worth the hassle to me because i cant imagine it being more than 5 or so AA in an 8 hour period and you run a very real risk of annoyed people training you. Its technically not botting because theres no automation you're literally just afk so its not against the EULA.

Its not all that disruptive just annoying. I have read a few people say they just set up camp on top of the AFKer and in between their own pulls outdps the mercs and steal the kills. Have read quite a few that have trained them. i got bored once and in between pulls taunted the mob an afkers merc was fighting and used terrors to drag the mob and the merc far away so a mob would pop right on the afker. The merc vanished and went right to his master and taunted it off so that was no fun.

There are also some good rooms in Griegs for this to occur. I would often find a mage and pet afk in one of the side corridors off the gate room.

It would be fairly annoying.

I'm actually starting to get annoyed with mercs altogether. It pisses me off every time I'm told that no group in a hotzone has room, meanwhile, it's a bunch of groups with 3 people, and 3 mercs. It's like, "really? you couldn't just drop 1 tank merc to let a real live player tank in? Is the damned merc really that much better?". I'd like to say something like, "nerf higher lvl(60+) mercs!" but then people would call me an idiot.

Its probably 3 boxers. I know when i box i have enough to do without having to try and keep up conversation and be friendly. Nerfing mercs would really hurt this game. In fact i would say that Mercs are the single biggest improvement this game has seen since the initial population decline started. I know i wouldnt play anymore if they nerfed mercs.

The population may be booming for now but its still a PITA to get a group together for basic XP content. The typical gamers mentality has shifted so far away from the grind that it just wouldnt work anyway. Back in the day getting 6 people together and sitting for hours and hours in the same spot was typical, these days people just dont want to do that anymore. The way the genre has shifted people prefer to get on grab a task or quest and go finish it. So now we have mercs, XP grind on your own time schedule and not be bound by the schedules of others.

Its easy to say "nerf mercs" now but if you got your way you would be regretting it the first time your XP group broke early because you couldnt find a healer. While i do miss a good old XP group and making new friends i dont miss sitting in LFG for hours and i dont miss sitting with 4 other people hunting down a tank or healer, i dont miss being all the way in an XP camp and losing a tank or healer just to wait forever and eventually just break anyway.

I did it for a while to get faction in Lower Guk. When you leave your toon and merc there for a week while you are on vacation, the faction hits tend to add up. It works out to be about 1,500 faction hits depending on the room that you use. Of course, it also cost me about 70k pp for that time period as well, but at least I didn't have to actually "play" to get the faction hits.

I box, but I have been known to let the odd player into the group and pack away the merc...it depends on a couple things
-if they are past group/guild/friends
-my tolerance level for being told how to play
-and just whether or not I will be on for any length of time

I don't mind this at all as every time I zone into the hole, there are about 10 stone ward corpses rotting with rubies, crowns, and plat on them. I just help myself. Hey, who am I hurting?

I honestly do not think that mercs really changes the way the games player patterns have shifted over the years as it was in response to a serious drop off in available/active clerics in the group game. Before mercs I remember Clerics were hard to get in a pick up group (around 2005-2006)..sometimes people would beg and beg on general /ooc etc to no avail..Meanwhile 10 or more clerics would be parked in POK but would not respond at all to requests for pick up groups..though many were raid clerics who rarely do pick up groups.

By the time SOF was in full swing, it was almost impossible for people trying to form spontaneous groups to get a Cleric or Shammy if not within guild, cliques or real life friends in game.

The AFK issue I believe I have seen a few times though it never really affected me personally. But if it was infringing on me or others unfairly, a good train and drop aggro as mentioned above would solve the issue for all non AFK people hunting in the zone.
