I quit the game when the level cap was 65 and the general rule back then was to get to 65, then collect your AA's. When I recently came back, I was faced with a collection of very gimp chars in the 55-65 range. My first goal was to gear them up and without PP that has been a relatively onerous task.

Next weekend, I plan to farm AA's until my eyes cross. My poor Pally can't kill anything alone, he must have a healer. We won't mention my War, he is pathetic. My Necro and Wiz on the other hand need nothing at all to plow through mobs. Class balance, rrriiiiiggghhhttt, lolol.

I you don't mind a suggestion... I would recommend NOT farming AA during the double XP weekend, but rather going for regular XP (100%).

During my 2011 return (I've retired about 7 times, LOL), I was actually meticulously tracking my AAs on my mains, and discovered at the end of a double XP weekend that I had made FAR less than double (maybe about 50% more). What I was able to piece together, along with some testing the next double XP weekend, is that the bonus XP you get for having a low AA total does not get doubled. And that low AA bonus is even bigger now than it was then. So I would recommend that you put it all towards regular XP for the bonus weekend, and then do your AAs once it's over. You will be AMAZED how quickly the AAs fly by when you are just starting them. The current system gives a 1000% AA XP bonus when you have 0 AAs, and it linearly declines to no bonus at 4000 AA.

My mains are currently racking up AAs in the mid 80s, but next weekend, I'll switch them all over to regular XP. Then back to AAs when it's done.

Tat

PS - obviously, it goes without saying, if you're over or near the 4000 AA cutoff, then it doesn't matter.

Also no bonus for quests (at least for Lessons of the Devoted and XP Potions) going to all AA. You still get the bonus if apply the quest xp to regular xp though; another AA bizarre-ity. The server-wide bonus may affect quest xp going to AA, but I haven't tested it out, or if I have, I have forgotten what the results were. :P

Knowing me, I'll probably do nothing until the last minute, then spend an hour or two at the farm trying to rake in some xp on an alt or something.

Firstly, I appreciate ALL the suggestions you can make!! I didn't know about the difference in XP and how it is applied. It just seemed that the last double XP weekend, the weekend close to when I returned to the game, that I was seeing a lot of extra AA's on that weekend. My 65 Necro just dinged 340 AA's this morning. My 55 Wizard is in the 120 range and the gimp, now 67 Pally, has less than 100. My War has 16, lol, at 61. With his rather poor weapons, those kicking snakes are chasing him to the zone line.

I'm afraid if I level these chars more, then they will be at an even higher disadvantage vs their level of mobs. Hmmmm, what to do, lolol.

Yes, you very definitely will see more. Just not double. As opposed to regular XP, which will be double. If you're not an efficiency nut like me, you probably won't care about the difference, I just wanted to point it out :)

As far as leveling without getting AA's, and that making it harder to XP, there is some validity to that. And that's also HIGHLY class dependent. On a Warrior, for example, the AAs make a huge difference for soloing. For a wizzy or druid (mainly any casters), not so much. Casters depend much more heavily on the new spells they get as they level.

Also, for soloing, especially for chars that are just getting going again, you will do much better fighting low light blue mobs. The XP/mob will be less, but you'll be able to go through them much more quickly, and for something like a warrior, you'll take much less damage, so there will be less downtime.

I have relatives coming in from overseas and some of them are staying JUST for the four days around the weekend. This seems to be the bane of my EQ existence. I estimate that about 80% of the time whenever Sony offered a bonus XP weekend I either had out-of-town relatives visiting with us who it would be rude of me to ignore while playing computer games ("No way you're leaving your cousins, who don't even speak English, with me for hours while you play 'that game'!", quoting wifey here since I'd do it if it was just me!), or work demands had me going in extra or dealing with vital work at home, or I myself was on vacation out of the area and having no easy access to a game-capable computer. When I was a heavy raider it would make my eyes bleed to hear from guildies how much XP and AAs they had earned while I was "away from game" for the duration of double-XP time.

The one time I was home sick during a double XP weekend I did drag myself out of bed prop myself up by the computer with a 2-day supply of drinks, food, tissues and meds and played as much as my achey fevery brain would permit. Got probably a good solid two hours in before wife found me passed out drooling on the keyboard with one of my toons having lost 10 levels in a death-loop. Kindly, she put me to bed and then moved my toon to a safe spot.

However she left him in-game and the rez timers all expired... /sigh

Haha,

Murphy's Law strikes again !

I'm not quite 80% unlucky but I seem to have unexpected visitors and phone calls more often, with people in the mood to chat when I want to be short and concise... during double xp weekends.

Next Weekend I am hoping to level my 88 Mage to 90 and gain a few levels on a couple lower alts..Then get a couple LOD sessions over the coarse of the weekend on my main crew for some AA's.

Just a reminder here for you folks with LotD access, remember to burn it the morning prior to double xp weekend, so that when you log in on double xp weekend itself, your LotD timer will have reset and you'll have two lessons to use up in one play session.

I plan on AAing my necro/pally combo a lot. I got them to 75 and have been taking my Pally down to Ruins of Illsalin where lobby buffs and last year's fabled weapons make short work of the spiders in sets of 2s and 3s. Pally is at over 1200 AA now and the Necro is around 500 (she's just not quite as fun as the pally) so they've got quite a bit of work to do before sending them on to 80. And yes i DID read the advice above about levelling.. that is probably very wise. But I want to milk the 75 content before moving on to 80.
on a side note, I really enjoy playing casual alt characters that take their sweet time AAing and being twinked. It's such a good feeling going around at-level content without a healer merc, kicking *** and taking names!

I plan to save up max tasks this week and pop them for the extra NORMAL EXP they give. P.S. make sure you have bag space for the rewards.
i plan to farm some PP - because levels will cost PP.
I plan to only work on NORMAL EXP during the double EXP weekend.
i plan to clear out my bags to hold my new levels of spells so when I grind non-stop during the DOUBLE EXP i am not having to stop the fun and run to get new spells.

•From March 8, 2013 to March 17, 2013 Rare Mobs and Faction Gains/Losses will be dramatically increased. Grind faction and get loot!
This week I plan to work on DON progression due the the faction stuff - my sk I still cant get it to change to good side progrss yet still need faction. bummer.

I'm kind of burnt out on my wizard (level 93 with 4591 aa's), so currently working on a mage. She's pretty fun so far.. and the double xp will give me an excuse to play her more. :)

I just came back from a 8 year break myself last Tuesday.
The timing could of been worst ;)
I managed to farm solo by three boxing about 100aa per char and a couple of levels (69->71, 66,67->69)
What killed me though was the price of buying all the spells. Before leaving I had about 40k (which was not bad but not insanely much either) and now I'm down to less than 5k. So leveling wont do much for me until I get more plats. I need to look into the hot zone quest from what I read.

Any other suggestions?

Also, are there some anniversary things I can participate at those levels?

Thanks,

Mkai

If you have not done it yet try this one https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=3068 . It will give you a 10 charge pot of double xp. It took me a little under an hour to do it for my mage.

Welcome Back,

Yes, Buying spells for three characters simultaneously could draw down 40Kpp very quickly.. I rather the hunting route for earning platinum, so I'll give my two cents for what it is worth..

For characters in the mid to high 60's till the low 70's, Dragonscale Hills has the best of both worlds... Decent XP as well as very good loot (mainly for 65 -75 characters) and also good vendor fodder. A lot of the drops from the named in this zone (and there are a lot of named in DSH) still sell in the 5KPP+ range in the Bazaar, so its a decent way to make some plat while levelling or earning AA's in the 65-75 range..after DSH goes light blue.... Loping Plains will get you to the low 80's and many AA's can be farmed there also..

Other than that, the hotzones "Sunderrock" and "The Steepes" have good xp at your level range and decent vendor fodder but the drops from the named is not near as good as DSH...so less plat per hour but better xp than DSH as they are hotzones..

But of course there are many old world favorites also ,such as Acrylia Caverns (xp poor at 67-70 though) for very good vendor fodder and the Hole (usually camped on my server) etc.

Good luck and enjoy..
