In DIRE need of some help with single char lag issues...Follow

#1 May 28 2013 at 8:09 PM Rating: Good
Okay, I'll tell you as much info as i can about my problem with lag:

To start off with, specs on my PC:
- Win7 Home Premium SP1
- CPU: i7 quadcore / 860 @ 2.8Ghz-3.77Ghz
- 8GB RAM (more than enough to 2 bot)
- 64-bit
video card: GeForce GTX 470 1GB ram
- Virt Mem set to: 10kMB-20kMB
one C drive (500GB)

I have 2 EQ accounts, prob 14 chars bewtween the two and I have hughesnet ISP, not uber-fast...but not that slow: I do exp about 1-2 sec delay, (usually @ 1.25 sec on avg.) but doesn't normally affect my gameplay to a noticable degree.
Here's my problem...I have a 90 ranger on one of the 2 accounts I use. For some "unknown" reason I have had the same issue 2x before in recent months that I am having right now. Starting Sat afternoon during double exp weekend, i camped out to the char screen for about an hour. Nothing changed, no tweaks, no ISP loss, I didn't change or do anything to my PC or ingame to disrupt a thing. I logged back in to play in HoT CY, and *BAM*....massive lag --- to the tune of casting a spell and it taking 2-5 min to finally cast it! Almost as if my char was locked up..."You can't perform this command at this time"...spellbar wouldn't reset, couldn't cast, melee, camp, nothing. I camped out by using /quit. Relogged and same thing, mass lag issues. Shut whole system down, reset router and modem...no difference. This has been going on for 3.5 days now. The strange thing is, it is ONLY on my ranger char...no other chars on same account, nor the other account have had this prob.
What's the deal?
I have tweaked my in-game options to min CPU usage...nada. I have read multiple posts about lag issues in forums and tried a multitude of diff changes and still have seen no improvement on my ranger. I also tried logging in on that account on my wife's computer and it's the same thing. So it is definitely an issue with that char file, somehow.

Reinstalling EQ from scratch being a "last resort", (because of having hughesnet ISP, takes 8ish hrs to DL all files after reinstall, and using a handful of DL allowance tokens), are there any other ideas that i could try to fix the lag with this one char ingame?
I even deleted my char UI file and am going to try that, but doubt it will fix the problem.

Any of you out there had any similar issues like I'm having? If so, please tell me how you fixed it, please =)

Just to be absolutely sure it's nothing on your end, I'd rename your character_server.INI and UI_character_server.INI files out of game, then reload the game and character and see if it still happens. Try other zones as well if you haven't just to be sure it's not that zone (might be something with the zone file that only that character is using).

If it is just that zone, you try deleting the zone's .s3d or more likely .eqg and possibly .zon files, then doing a complete file scan to get new ones downloaded.

If none of that helps, I'd /petition with all the details you can give them. And possibly post in the official EQ Support forums performance section with your ticket number. SoE EQ Performance forum: https://forums.station.sony.com/eq/index.php?forums/performance-support.14/

Hope this helps some,

Yther Ore.

Thanks Yther.
How do i rename character_server.INI and UI_character_server.INI files? I just deleted both files then relogged....and it's still the same lag. Rename them to what?

It's all zones so far, have tried HoT, new Ferrott, GL, GH, pok....all zones seem to be same deal.
From what I've observered: it cannot be my ISP alone, since no other chars are having this issue. It doesn't seem to be anything with my PC, since I had same issue on my wife's PC, (only with this one char, no others)....and it doesn't seem to be a "ranger" issue, since I asked in ranger chat if any other rangers were having lag issues like me...none were.

So one of a few possibilities arise; somewhere I have corrupt files for that single char / in some way I got a /bug when I camped then relogged that day / or a number of other things I have yet to figure out, lol.

BTW, after I deleted both char_server.INI & UI_char INI files, relogged --- it's still taking 2-5min to cast a single spell and I cannot zone into pok for the lag popbacks won't allow me to get to pok zone click....so still stuck =(

Sounds like something server side with that character. Maybe some of the info is corrupted on their end or something causing it problems. Not sure, but a /petition and/or posting in the support forums should help out eventually. I doubt they'll get back to on the petition tonight but usually get back in less than 24 hrs, unless it's a holiday or something.

If you deleted them out of game, is the same as renaming them, just can't restore them back. In windows, just click on the name, to highlight it, then press F2 and you can edit it. I usually put a _0 at the end or _Original or whatever, so I know which one it is. If you were still in-game when you deleted them and /camp out it would of resaved them before closing, so basically did nothing. You need to make the changes out of game, so the game doesn't resave them.

Sounds like you did it correctly though, without seeing the details.

I was hoping it was something like a bad texture or model in one of the zone files, or one of the general equipment files, that we could narrow done and restore. Sounds server-side most likely though, and you should seek out EQ tech help to narrow done the problem. They may want DXDiag/MSInfo report, and you can get the instructions from https://help.soe.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/28973

Yther,

Yes, I did delete both those files out of game, then restarted comp and re-ran EQ patcher and logged back into that same account / same char...with no positive results. Camped and tried diff char on same account and no lag whatsoever. Yes, it does sound like a single char problem on Luclin (my server). I will try to do a /petition in game on that char in a few min, after I try your rename char files...can't hurt, right? Lol.
Thanks for taking the time to read and post on this thread =)

IF and WHEN I get this problem resolved, I will reply to my original thread with the results so that future problems like this, by others, may be quickly thwarted.

Might be the log file. It's per toon and in a subdirectory within the EQ directory. If it gets too big, things can slow down. Can also see if turning logging off helps. I know it makes a difference to frame rate on raids. Check the log file size and also type "/log off" in game. If it's really big, just rename it and EQ will start a new one.

when you make changes make sure you dont use /quit and log off nomally for the changes to save.

I saw this posted in https://forums.station.sony.com/eq/index.php?threads/highend-pc-and-still-lagging-hitching-dreadful-long-zone-times.200060/

Hello,
This may be a longshot but if your still having issues and you normally experience 1-2 sec delay (and 1.2 secs average lag during better times), that equates to 1000-2000 millisecs on your ping meter ingame or an average of 1200 msecs (1.2 secs) when near its best...That is serious lag for EQ imho. Especially if you are boxing and have the mercs out.

The fact that it happens on your wifes computer also may be that the common isp or network that both computers share, has a problem.

Im in Trinidad ,West Indies (a long packet route that the data has to travel) and play on the Euro server and still average 150-175 msecs (0.15 - 0.175 sec) of ping on a 5.0 mb per sec d/l,1.0 mb per sec u/l connection = My connection speed is half the worlds average according to "Speedtest". While thats with three separate computers if 3 boxing. Having only one computers load on the modem does not even noticeably decrease my ping as opposed to three computers logged in to EQ.

This on an old Dell XPS 600 desktop with windows xp and two newer HP laptops with marginally better pings. On rare days when its slow or an overhead line gets damaged, I would be in the 500 milli sec range and boxing my SKNec/Shm becomes almost impossible at times.

Just in case all else fails you could try playing on yourself or wifes computer from a higher speed connection and see if it helps. As I dont think you could effectively play at anything near 2000 ms of ping.

Good luck.

1000-1500 ms ping is my personal limit, and by 500, I'm getting pretty annoyed. However, I've heard of people still playing with over 2000 ms pings. They say it's hard, but solo not bad, in groups you're always way behind. /shrug No way I can stand it over 1500 even solo.

Yes, I could solo my necro at the 500 msec lag range, even up to 1100 which is the worst I've ever seen here, but boxing or grouping, forget it..I end up loggin out in frustration, knowing EQ withdrawal effects would soon follow lol.

I Hope Mordwar gets through.

Hughesnet = Satellite Internet.

1-2 seconds is a normal ping for that.

Thanks for respones all!
As far as hughesnet ISP, we've (wife and I) been playing on it for about 5+ yrs now and have both 2 boxed (4 chars total) and haven't seen a huge difference in lag effecting our gameplay. Unless server is packed (like 2x exp weekend or 30+ ppl in same zone - then we exp popbacks quite a bit), but pulling or casting seems (to us) relatively fast and in realtime (minus the 1-2 sec delay).

On that note, I do travel a bit and have played EQ from laptop using other Wifi or broadband ISP and the ms falls between 100-200 ms all day long. Looting is instant, no delay pulling or casting...but where I live the ONLY 2 choices for ISP are: dial-up (no way in HELL I'd ever go back to that). or... Satellite ISP = Hughesnet. No broadband or even DSL is avail here, they won't run the lines to us, even tho 1.5 miles away they can get highspeed broadband.

This is off original thread topic a little....
We have the HN 9000 modem with the oval dish that came with it) - but are actively looking into upgrading to Gen4 equipment. Just wondering if anyone out there had HN9000 hughesnet and then upgraded to Gen4 recently?
If so, I had a few Q's:
1.) can you see a noticable diff in lag (delay?) our ms is currently running on avg. (1500ms- 2000ms per char when both 2 boxing)....
2.) does EQ still not fall under Fair Access Policy rules? (I know EQ does not bite into that on HN9000 system, for that would chew all our DL allowance up, if it did)
3.) what does your avg. download/upload speed test with Gen4? (our HN9000 currently tests from 3Mbs-5MBs DL / 0.04Mbs -1.0Mbs UL) --- kinda crappy IMO from what they advertise DL/UL speeds to be.
Any other additional info you have about Gen4 would be appreciative =)
Just wanting to see if it's worth the upgrade to Gen4 or not?

Log files can get crazy big and I'm sure opening a file that big (I just checked mine and it was over 1GIG!!) can be a drag on a low-resource system. Logs are very useful so I'd consider just renaming your log file so EQ opens a new one next time you log in. Should take quite awhile to get huge again.

To update this information and status.....
Somehow, someway....my (massive) lag issues have vanished. I had 2 SOE tech support emails recommending certain possible corrupt file loc's to be deleted. I tried the advice from the first email to no avail, the lag problems actually worsened. Instead of taking 2-5 min to finally cast a spell, it was well over 5min. Zoning was impossible because every time I'd turn or move to a ZL - a few min later I was popped back to where I was before I moved. So I got P.O.ed a while and finally camped out...after it taking several minutes to finally recognize that I was trying to camp out.

I decided to try once more before waiting on any further assistance the most recent SOE tech support and see if the lag mysteriously vanished (like previous times before when I had the same lag issues on this same char), and TADA.....it was gone. So it was nothing else that I did or tried to fix since logging off yesterday night. I had turned my PC off for the night and didn't do anything on it till this morning...no fixes, patches,DL's,ISP reset - nothing...turned PC on, logged in on account with my ranger and all was normal again. The only possible explanation is that SOE happened to do "something" while trying to fix the login errors and ppl missing all expansion and lvls yesterday...?

To answer a few comments from others...
Hughesnet ISP has always had a ping (ms) from 1k-2k....whether I play one char or wife and I bot 2 chars...so we get the same ms ping playing 1-4 chars total....and have never had mass lag or delay (unless weather or high winds play a factor). I know some of you find it near impossible for me to say I can effectively 2 box with my wife, also 2 boxing and not experience ....LOADING PLEASE WAIT... messages every other pull...but from the time one pulls a mob until it "actually" pulls the mob is only about 0.5-1.0 ms delay, so almost instant, in our known EQ universe. The only issues we have with lag killing us is lag-spikes (which everyone exp from time to time), or when a zone is loaded with ppl...say 40+. That's when we start seeing lag affecting our efficiency and response time. When we went from dial-up to hughesnet, it was like going from B/W TV to HD. A world of diff, but we managed to overcome the 0.5ms-2.0 delays in a matter of days playing.

On broadband HS I'm sure anything over 500ms would be like us having 3k-4k ms...equiv.

Thank you ALL for your insight, knowledge and help / advice trying to get me back in the game.
So far, so good.!!!
