Let's talk about some of the zones a little deeper:
Toxxulia Forest is a newbie zone often bypassed by players in the past. Tehutibloodstorm's
detailed post from 2001 makes a strong argument for why this shouldn't have been the case (nor should be on a future progression server). The simple fact of it was, if you wanted to group, the masses were elsewhere. Level 1-10 I have done here (on last progression) and it was fine.
There's some odd quest rewards tied to the zone, none of which I have ever done, many of which I wonder if still work/exist:
Kerran Fishing Spear ,
Kerran Fishingpole (third item ever put into alla btw), and possibly one of the rarest quest items in the game
Erudehide Tunic .
They also retrofitted some Legacy of Ykesha questing into the zone with the luggald flesh quests (
evil and
good versions).
Toxxulia got revamped for The Buried Sea (?) expac so Kerra Island is now a part of the zone. The ingame default map is colourful, but reasonable. You have PoK access in the north due to Erudin Palace and in the South for the heretics of Paineel. The Luclin Spire for Odus is also in this zone.
_____________
The Warrens is one of the best zones in the game period. I preferred the old Kobold models to really make this place scary, but even in the modern look it is still a great place. Hard to solo at level (in era gear), challenging for groups and xp creeps from 5-22ish (though you'll be gaining it slow in the later teens). Before armor dye and stat-inflation made it all useless, The Warrens had armor looks people wanted. The weapons still look really good but are not "good" by even Luclin standards (keeping in mind that the Warrens was added to the game before Luclin).
Too many cool (well more fun/goofy than cool maybe...) drops to list, but here's a few:
Ultimate Hammer of EQ? ,
dog's sad stick ,
tasty! Current map is okay, but not great. There are many named in this zone, most of whom (maybe all) are only found in one location. Some of them might have placeholders, but you generally see a lot of them up if doing a fast run through on a higher level character. Another benefit of the Warrens is that you get faction ups with both good and evil Erudites in here. So more city access, and (more importantly to most) you can get a Paineel key which allows you to buy your key to the Hole.
_________
Stonebrunt Mountains isn't a zone I have done much in... it's actually pretty large. It was the 20-25 hotzone once upon a time, though reportedly the north end of the zone can take you into the 30s. The Kejak village has always intrigued me... and has actual references to the Vah Shir made by NPC. There's a bunch of quests there, I've always thought
Wakizashi of the Frozen Skies would be cool to complete.
The map I have for this zone is accurate for the topography, and some labels.. but hard to look at. I ran through here a lot to go to Gunthak (before they put the weird PoK book on a boat in). Running through more of the zone with my Druid's track up yesterday had me thinking I had missed out on an interesting hunting spot.
________
Gulf of Gunthak is the first of the actual Legacy of Ykesha zones. I remember when people would say "don't go there until level 40"... low 20s with a merc is probably fine, mid 20s in modern gear I have done solo (on the right class). There's a lot of camps here, and the vendors in the lighthouse so it is a contained progression if you want it to be.
One side of the beach is undead, the other side (with all the niflicks) is live with the occasional crossover. The tunnels are another spot you can hunt, people training through made this deadly in the past (ask any enchanter that needed to kill the mobs in there for the spell quest). There is odd loots drops off named and the LoY spell quests for most classes happen at least once here. There is a triggered event in the one dead-end cave, and the shanty town before the dulak zone in. I haven't actually been to the zone lately, but have spent a lot of time there in the past (without having done it all). You can also get into Nadox from Gunthak.
______
Dulak's Harbor you have the fun of killing pirates! And bar wenches...?. Solid loot drops (gems, heavy weapons of no use but cool looks). All the LoY zones drop wierd charms (since charm slot was introduced in LoY), one I have done the quest for several times is
charm of the brotherhood (if only most of the guild was Dwarves...). The Luggalds in the hidden caves are nasty, especially the boss fellow.
*Most of the LoY zones have at least one triggered/scripted event. Nadox has Inny for example. Loot itemization (especially for caster focus) really catches up in LoY in contrast to Luclin. Much of this stuff wasn't done much at the time because any guild partway into Planar Progression was getting better stuff than the LoY loots. But approaching this content as we are now (smaller groups, casual fun) there are challenges with reward. I'm not sure how high level a group will need to be to handle the Torg mines event for example... as I think it was raid levelish in difficulty.
**The Buried Sea zones I can't really say anything about except that I have kited some crocodiles along some beach and it was killer xp.
***I didn't detail about the
Hole , because I have really only used it to complete the enchanter epic and done the occasionally done some dabbling for xp near the entrance or deeper in the one tunnel. There are quests out of the Hole I have always wanted to do
Shiny Robe of the Underfoot ... but it's the kind of the thing that would be cooler on a progression server before dye hides the fact you have something extremely rare.
