Thank you for your helping me out.
Even though some of these questions seem very obvious, as a new player, I am stumbling along, learning as I go. I love exploring Norrath this way. But these small questions can also be frustrating. When I decided to post questions, I was really surprised at the almost immediate and detailed answers I received.
Thanks again.
By the way, you are totally on the money about Gloomingdeep/ Crescent Reach/ Plane of Knowledge path. I learned so much about the game just following the tutorials. I don't know how you did without them. I also did a lot of searching on the Forums. These are some noteworthy guides for players even newer than me! :

I think I've read most of your 5 (so far) posts ArchersGoon. Welcome to EQ!
This game has massively evolved from what it originally was. As a true newcomer it is probably worth doing the following:
1. Playing the Gloomingdeep tutorial right through. You'll be better geared at level 10 than my 50 enchanter was back in the day. If you use /open (you can make a hotbutton) and loot all the barrels, you will have more money than was possible years ago too. The tutorial quests do explain alot of how the game currently works.
2. Play the Crescent Reach newbie quest lines. This will eventually take you into Blightfire Moors and Goru'kar Mesa. You be towards level 45-50 and have a solid start in the game. They added this levelling chain (and the Drakkin race) much later, so it is the easiest and most lucrative of any of the levelling routes.
3. Plane of Knowledge has many, many NPC that can tell you stuff and things that will help you. By level 20, you'll want to find Franklin Teek and learn about hotzones. Even if you don't want to level fast, the quests connected to it are good gear for the level.
Note: this is just the gentlest way to get into this game, and the route that will most likely cross your path with other lower level players.
