Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley "can't wait to see" EverQuest Next on Sony's next-gen console.

EverQuest is one of the longest-running MMORPGs in gaming history, and Sony Online Entertainment is planning to continue its flagship series with EverQuest Next, dubbed "the next generation of MMOs." Announced earlier this year, Next is due out in 2014 for the PC and Mac--and possibly the PlayStation 4, SOE President John Smedley teased in a recent interview. Speaking about the next EverQuest with GamerHubTV, Smedley said that he "can't wait to see it on the PS4."

This isn't a confirmation, of course, as Smedley is quick to say. "We haven't announced, technically, that we're putting it on the PlayStation 4," he stated. "But it's fair to say that we're a Sony company, so I say that with a smile on my face."

Hence why the combat system in Next appears to be supper fast based etc.. This is to appeal to the Console gamers who would die if they could button mash like crazy. Imagine trying to play a game on console like Skyrim and hitting X and then waiting as your guy auto attacks and just hitting Y or anothe rbutton every now and then as the timers run down. This is one thing I can see being a good thing or a bad. It will probally draw less EQ 1 players then it will from other games as they will dislike that way of thinking.

The videos I have seen of EQ Next seems like it is eq meets Disney. I feel like it will be eq 1 # 1 eq Next maybe #2, eq 2 # 3 and Vanguard # 4 I think should and needs to realize that people want a game just like eq 1 with bug fixes, updated graphics, less power leveling more about the quest, missions and socialize aspect of the game.

Yep, cjguy. From what I have seen and read I have ABSOLUTELY NO interest in EQNext. The action is too arcadey and to me at least, it looks lie they are following in the moldof all the types of MMO's that have come out since WOW's success. Just too much like the others. Now, I am not one of the grumpy old men who think it will suck if it is not punishingly hard with stiff difficulty, etc. but it just looks too far off of the EQ mark, whatever that is. I should just shut up I guess. We allhave opinions but currently I have zero interest and will not be playing it unless it proves me wrong and ends up being a desperately needed breath of fresh air for MMO games. And it just doesn't look like it is to me. Looks like another watered down experience throwing out a few changes they think are innovative to the formula every uses to build their MMORPG's nowadays. I could go on a long rant about on the rails guidedby the nose progression that makes alts an exercise in tedium, but I have done it before and am almost sure to do it again, but that is for another thread. And by golly it is hard to type rants on this tablet, so I will REALLY shut up now lol.

Sorry for the typos but its is too much trouble for me to correct them from my tablet without my keyboard dock...which is lying too far out of reach of my hospital bed right now, :)

No interest in EQNext here either. I sincerely hope it does well for the franchise but,,,,

I just cannot see how any veteran EQ player in their right mind, will abandon his or her well developed characters and all those years of work and sacrifice to jump into another "version" of EQ.
It might be a temporary sideshow for EQ players like how RIFT was for some EQ players that I know. As when it launched they temporarily spent more time there than in EQ, then slowly but surely the novelty wore off and by six months or less they were back in EQ full time, on their alts and all...just like before the new game came out.

EQ Next needs to cater for a new crowd, not EQ's player base. Because most EQ players that I have talked to and read about on forums like these, ain't going anywhere...and I am glad for that and the continued well being of EQ.

SoE hasn't shown they understand "Legacy" (or investment in character if you will). They also (in the past) have insisted on being super-shiny and ahead of the system curve of the wide-ranging playerbase (both EQ2 and the adopted child Vanguard [to name 2] launched with high system reqs to enjoy the game).

How to honor Legacy? Port my characters into the new game, onto a server with the same name so all my old friends are there in theory. Even if this means distilling the character down to a series of accomplishments (level, aa count, titles earned, epics done, etc.). Maybe my decade old enchanter has to be reborn a slightly different class (since they didn't keep the same classes for EQ2, certainly don't expect that in Next)... Give me some unique skin "legacy only" armor options, including the old epics. There tons that could easily be done with it so that my character's journey continues as it were... (I might even be tempted to play something like a warrior class if I could use classic enchanter looking gear and wield the chanter epic 1.0... in other words all my work lets me stand out in some unique way, also known as value for the investment.)

I totally agree that too many of the newer games rely on a silly-easy/boring led-by-the-nose levelling path. I'd rather spend time doing good quests that give me something worth accomplishing than 500 quests that replace the same 5 armor slots every 2 levels.

Agreed about not being real excited over EQ Next and, really, the only other MMORPG to hold my attention for any length was City of Heroes (which was far enough removed from the fantasy genre to not invite EQ comparisons in my mind). But I can't imagine a major studio making another game really like EQ; people wanting that level of play are a niche audience these days and studios want sales.

Didn't they already do this? Perhaps if more console gamers actually played it, it would still be around?
