just left a really good MMO for reasons that make my brain bleed. I was wondering if this were the place for me that won't immediately **** on my gamer decency?

Sorry, but judging from the info in your other recent posts, I do not think that EQ is the game for you.

Seriously ! I am not joking or being sarcastic..

Everquest is the best game to get into. It is still one of the best games out there with a good community. Like all other games there are some rotten apples but you will find that no matter what. The designers also constantly try to update the game to keep up with changes in playstyles and to help players especially those new or returning. For instance recent changes will make getting around to higher levels easier and less stressful. Click on link in my signature for even more boosts and help.

I'm going to be sarcastic, and give my usual; If you have to ask, then most likely the answer is NO. And asking for opinions on general forums is like asking if steak is good at a meat market. You'd get a wide variety of answers, normally, but being in a meat market, most of them will be of course it's good. So for most responses in this forum, the answer will be EQ is worth it; It's one of the greatest games ever!

Does that mean you'll like it, 100% absolutely not. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't it depends on you.

As far as worth it? Worth it how? What are you valuing the worth on ... cost, enjoyment, social interaction, solo-ability, the list goes on forever. When asking for judgement calls, you need to specify the criteria for making the judgements.

Now, non-sarcastic, I'd agree with what Hexeez wrote.

I knew I shouldn't have read this thread; Opinion questions without specifics or criteria for evaluation are almost always someone trolling to stir up crap!

The game is free to play. Give it a shot and see.

The real sarcastic response is:

"No, it is wise to invest your playtime into Vanguard immediately".

I tell people not to try Everquest when I tell them I play it. That is, I have yet to meet the type of person I think would be interested in it - namely someone who tends to play or replay old and older games, or someone who is very patient. I find the rewards from playing EQ are almost ephemeral, or at least, very very slow to develop. It really requires a lot of attatchment on the part of the player to their class, their character, what they have attained (gear, AA, etc) and the world... maybe not the lore, but the artwork and feel of the game itself. I recommend WoW to most MMO players. If they're over that, and they enjoyed the pace of Eve Online but not the space setting, and they're okay with grinding, and graphics aren't that important to them, then I would tell them to check it out, and I could talk their heads off about the game as I expect everyone on this board could. But for someone who plays Call of Duty on their Xbox, or someone who gets into Titanfall Beta for a week before going back to Battlefield 4, or someone who says they played WoW for a few months but never made it to max level, to them, suggesting they try EQ would just be really bad advice.

My son used to watch me play EQ when he was 6 and he got so interested I got him his own account. Then 3 of his friends got their own accounts. So for a couple of years all of these elementary school kids were playing EQ almost eery day after school (and homework, that was an incentive!) and as much on weekends as moms would allow.

But they've all graduated high school now and none play. Sometimes one or more of them will watch me play, and maybe feel some nostalgia, but there is no attraction for them. I tell them their old accounts are probably still accessible with their original toons but even that's not a draw.

It's interesting because I see so many adults who played "way back when" (1999-2002) who are coming back, drawn by the nostalgia, the fond memories and perhaps frustrations with everything else "out there" in terms of competing games. The kids, though, seem to have outgrown it. I think one big reason is they have grown up in a world of intensity, in terms of visual and gaming experiences, also a world where things are made easy for them.

What does it all mean? Beats me LOL. Just adding my 2cp to the question asked at the top: "Is this the place for me?" The only reasonable answer is give it a try and see.

Maybe or maybe not. The reason I said that I do not think EQ was for you, was because you had stated emphatically (in the Final Fantasy XIV thread - in their general section) that you do not like grinding, bad 'or challenging' quest dialogue and housing. Three common aspects of Everquest ..especially the first two.

Good luck in whatever game you decide to play.

Indeed. I too spoke without malice. I wish you nothing but the best with a new game search.

Free to play but it cuts into my EQ time. But I need to spend time with my real life friend some way.
i am hoping to get my friend to try EQ Next once its live.

Everquest will always be worth it because no game has such a draw. Yes it can be hard, there is a grind (though thats been lessoned alot) there is still quests that are dumb but you never actually need to quest. The player base depending on server is vibrant and there are alot of great people. Not many annoying snot nosed brats anymore.. mainly adults.. though there are a few that act like brats but thats anygame. The game is great if you want a challenge, if you want the easy routine.. play ESO or Rifts....

Long-time EQ player here (since 2000, though not in the last year). I just came off of a 4 month stint in Eve (steam sale, $5, WTH). I liked the game a lot, but gave up mainly due to the game not being friendly to a casual playstyle. Man, that game demands a lot of playtime if you want to excel! (Caveat: you could play casually if you want to do PI or production or trading, but those didn't interest me). So I guess the correlation between liking EQ and liking Eve is definitely there :)

There is absolutely no reason not to at least try EQ when it's free-to-play. Worst that can happen is that you don't like it. Big deal, it's not like you spent any money on it, deal, and move on. Why would you even need to ask?

I would really recommend at least investing $5 into the Silver upgrade. IMO the game is unplayable without at least Silver. a one time $5 fee isn't bad for the features it unlocks.

Unlike most F2P games with Silver you can really go along ways. I have a mage who I started from scratch and that is now 83 and still very playable with a Silver account.

Even with F2P it's a reasonable question to ask ("is everquest worth it? ") from the point of view of investing TIME. I've played a ton of games over the years, like many of us, and my biggest regret with games that turned out not to be very good was the waste of time, not money. And sometimes you won't know if the game isn't your cup of tea until you've invested a fair amount of hours playing it. That's why nowadays if I do start a new game, I go by the "two hour rule" at the start: if the game hasn't captivated me within two hours I seriously consider just stopping then and there. By no means do I have to have mastered a game within two hours, since no worthy game should be so easily learned, but I "need" to be completely intrigued by it after spending that much time for me to justify continuing. Yeah, maybe I extend the 2 hours to 4 hours, and add in some time reading other player reviews, but my point is there are two many good playable games out there to sink a lot of time in one that doesn't grab you fairly early on.

I take the same approach to books, especially fantasy and science fiction. If the author can't grab me in the first 50 or so pages, I'm inclined to think the whole book's going to be a waste of time. Life's too short and all that.

Ever hear the expression, albeit over-used, "there's two hours of my life I will never get back?" It does mean something, though!

All of these replies, are exactly why I came back to EQ, adult responses and adult reasoning,....that and I missed EQ, and the challenge that other mmos just do not possess..
