Part of the problem is that recently instead of getting thread reply spamemrs, which are pretty much invisible once banned, now we're getting topic creation spammers. They are coming out of India, and near as I can tell it's 3 or 4 people with access to the entire resources of an ISP. We can't ban their IP addresses because they appear to have thousands of them. The new poster topic rate limiter works, but they are manually making 7 or 8 new accounts to spam all at once. They get banned quickly, but our process to remove the banned topics from the display is a "per topic" process that requires 6 clicks of the mouse per topic to be removed, and presently can only be done by a few people for various reasons including the "Admins who have that ability can make individual posts or threads cease existing without any record whatsoever " so Management has decided to restrict the availability of that. Compound that with the fact that they tend to hit us at about 3-4 am pacific standard time which is when we have the least likelihood of having an admin online, and they have been very effective despite our countermeasures.
Improving the remove nuked threads function, or changing the way that the first pages of a forum segment display nuked content is in the works. Aside from that we're left with banning specific URL's, which they change daily, banning certain words, of which the ones they use most frequently are "kitchen, Magic, and ID" which could make communicating about other in game things difficult, adding some sort of Captcha requirement for new posters until they hit post 20 or so, which would kill our legitimate incoming newbie population which is already too small, or literally flying to India and beating these people upside the head with their own keyboards, If I thought I had a chance of actually pulling off the latter, it would probably be worth the trip. If it ever gets too barren in here and we don't seem to have noticed, PM me directly and I'll come clean them out. These idiots tend to hit every one of the individual forum sections randomly, so finding where the banned threads ended up after some other admin has banned the user sometimes becomes a challenge.
We'll get a countermeasure figured out for these ones. That or someday they'll get bored.
