Do mercenaries upgrade tiers?

Doing something like No Heroism Without Fear, do existing mercs automatically upgrade or do I have to dismiss and purchase new ones?

Apparentice to Journeyman. Is that what you mean? If so, then no, you'll have to dismiss and buy journeyman.

Or do you mean do they gain levels as you do? If by levels they usually level as you do but sometimes have to be suspended and then brought out again.

Actually, no. Between Journeyman tiers. I have a Tier 1, and after the quest can get higher levels. I guess the same thing applies, though. Dismiss and buy a new one.

Ya they won't auto upgrade through the tiers. Did you do the heroic character quest to get the tier 5 journeyman merc?

Yes. I did https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=7485 No Heroism Without Fear (finally....)
Interestingly, I dismissed my Tank merc afterwards, I forget the exact contract but it was a special or reward, and when I went to the special merc merchant I didn't see that one available again for purchase. However, I had a confectionery dps merc I hadn't dismissed - I was able to buy another cookie as a tank.
