This race sounds promisingFollow

I was thinking of going for dragoon with samurai as a subclass as an elvaan. Would this be any good? Is there a better subclass for dragoon?

Elvaan shouldn't have as much str, but more agil and dex.

Im kind of glad this elven like race is different in that they are taller, and stronger than the elves we all know of.

This is particularly awesome because, I think an Elvaan Samurai would be the shizzle. So in about two weeks, see you on Fairy with my Elvaan Warrior, Kengo ;)

And the Galka are meatshields lol. :D

The only caster class that Elvaan are good as is the RDM.

You have to comapre the racial advantages this class has and its disadvantages with the RDM's. The RDM has access to decent armour and weapons which allows you to melee during fights, the elvaan are known for hitting hard so as a RDM you can actually melee, the RDM also gets a hp to mp ability which should work well with their high racial HP.

Overall, the only caster the elvaan are good as is a RDM, apart from that, they suck as WHM or BLM because those jobs cannot melee and elvaan will not have enough MP to do sufficient casting.

It's pretty obvious you've never played a caster. Elvaan has plenty of mp to do the job as a black or white mage. Since they game runs on HATE there is such thing as mp overkill. The biggest factor is the player. All the mp in the world won't save your party if you don't know to to effectively play your job. There's only so fast you can heal or deal damage before you get aggro and die. Besides you get 150+ mp in items in end game stuff and in low to mid levels the mind stat makes them the best healer at their level. Main thing is play what you like. No race or job is better then the next no matter what anyone says. Fact is all race/job combo's will get a party, friends, and have fun and that's what games are for, fun.

You should go dk/thief because thief gives extra dex and the dk has very low def but has high atc.warrior is pretty good but i recommend dk/theif.

Few things... First off Elvvans are indeed stroger than Gilkas. They are equal to start and get stronger. Secondly,

"Elvaan shouldn't have as much str, but more agil and dex."

This is incorrect. To take the warrior job as an example, Elvvans start with9 str, 7 dex, and 6 agi. Gilkas Start with9 str, 7 dex, and 7 agi.
At level 70 Elvvans have 74 str, 54 Dex and 50 agi. Gilkas have 70 str, 58 dex, and 54 agi.

The real difference is in vit and HP, at level 70 Elvanns have 1268 hp and 58 vit where Gilkas have 1409 hp and 66 vit. However, if you want to tank in higher levels as an Elvvan (or any race) you will probably be a paly and, without going over all the stats again for a pal/war (they work out to be similar ratios) the equalizer for Elvvans is MP. Elvans have nearly twice as much MP (221 vs 113). This is actually an advantage. Not necessarily to make up for the total HP, but rather, to hold aggro. As you know cureative spells pretty much draw the most aggro of any type of spell comporable for the level. The ability for Elvvan palys to cast twice as many curative spells means that they are much more effective at keeping aggro and, without the ability to stack taunts like you can in other MMO's, this is quite important to a tank. The additon of having the highest Mind (effectiveness of each heal cast) or any race makes Elvvan Pal/wars the ideal tank in FFXI.

"Im kind of glad this elven like race is different in that they are taller, and stronger than the elves we all know of. "

Actually, this game finally got it right =). Most MMOs borrow alot of the race mythology from Tolkien-esque writings (yess I know alot of his mythos was constructed on Norose folk lore but I'm not going there now =). In Tolkien's work the Elves were, infact, much sturdier and more phisically imposing creatures than any other race. In the Silmarillion (where I was a King of Elves ;) the toughest of Elves were able to kill lesser gods that had gone bad (Balrogs) single handedly. So, Square really relied on the "traditional" ideal of an elf in creating the Elvvan race, rather than that travisty, pip-squeek, High elf of EQ and the the elf of EQOA. GJ Square :D

To all those who complain about Elvaan not being higher in DEX/AGI...that's what Mithra are for. In FFXI, Elvaan are fighters, Galka are defenders, Mithra are archers/rogues, Tarutaru are mages, and Humes are all of the above (but not best at anything). It's all for game balance guys...

This document seems to be the best place to figure out what Main jobs go with best with certain Sub jobs .... your race will also make the difference depending on what style you are looking for ..... hope this helps

everything is possible here, galka mage, tarutaru warrior, just play whatever you like
#40 Dec 08 2003 at 3:21 AM Rating: Default
Well elvaan may be one of the most useless races in the game. Because of galkas 200 more hp for a small lose of 2-3 str. im sorry but the implentation of race that is simplely for looks is compeletly useless. Tarutaru have magic, Galka have melee, mitra are just as useless, and humes are for people who do not know what job to be.
#41 Dec 08 2003 at 1:18 PM Rating: Default
HELL YEAH!!!i agree with that.Galkas are the best, as the loss of 4 str at lvl 70 can be replaced by rings and stuff while the health difference is alot!Go Galka forever~
#42 Dec 09 2003 at 2:39 AM Rating: Default
The definition of useless is different for different types of players. To roleplayers or casual gamers, identifying with their character is the main thing. For a power gamer, the character could look like a tree stump as long as the stats are top notch.

This argument is endless and comes up with every RPG. I can't really say it's gotten boring b/c it was never interesting to begin with.

First, I am not an Elvaan, I am a Taru BLM. I was lurking this board and thought I could be useful.

Elvaan make decent enough WHM, especially if it's gonna be their subjob or they sub in some MP boosters. I've partied with enough to know.

For anything physical (melee) they would be either first or second in my book. If you equip some +dex/+HP gear, I would honestly take you over a Galka, because you get such nice damage. This is true for WAR, PAL, DRK, SAM, DRG. I haven't pted with any Elvaan rangers or thieves.

As a Red Mage, you can effectively carry out the melee aspect and the white magic.
<shameless personal plug meant as a joke> As a Black, I rock you. :-)

My usual party is an Elv.PAL/WHM, Gal.SAM/WAR, Tar.BLM/RDM(me), Any(except galk) WHM/X, Hu/Mit/Tar BLM/(WHM/RDM), Elv.DRG/X

That's an outsider's PoV. Notice though that only two races were mentioned twice, mine (Taru /panic), and Elvaan.

ud=you would
wud=would
neways=anyways
gd=good
wen=when
ur=your
What was so hard about that?? *goes back and checks typos so i wont be flamed at* hehe

But he's not typing it for himself, now is he? If he was, he shouldn't be posting it for others to read. Maybe it's just me being Dutch, but I never learned how to decode garbles like that. Guess the English taught in foreign countries differs from the kind I learned.

Sarcasm aside, imagine how bad it'd be for people who don't know English as well as I do to see stuff like that.
