By the time you could live through Beta in FF VII, it almost wasn't worth it anymore
Wear a ring that nullifies or absorbs fire damage.
I loved enemy skill materia in FF7. Mighty Gaurd, White Wind, Magic Hammer, Beta, Trine, Magic Breath, Aqua Breath, were all great (Mighty Gaurd especially, Protectra Shellra Hastega).
Some useful things BLU might get in FFXI:
Sleepga (Trap, sheep, and Mandragora Family)
Dispel (Wyvern [AoE], Dragon [AoE], and Eft [cone] family)
Slowga (Spider and Demon family)
Bind (Antlion, Orc, and Walking Tree family)
Blindga (Antica and Antlion Family)
Paralyga (Tiger and Wyvern family)
Defence Bonus* (Antlion, Crab, and Crawler family)
MP/TP Drainkiss (Leech family)
Drainga (Ghost and Skeleton family)
Stun (Yagudo [AoE/single], Weapon [AoE], Orc, and Quadav family)
AoE Damage (Scorpion, Crab**, Orc**, Yagudo**, Goblin/Moblin, Lizard, etc. Family)
Big Single Target Damage (Orc, Pugil, Spider, Scorpion, Dahmel, etc. family)
Various STAT Down effects (Bat, Morbol, Mandragora, etc. family)
*: Self only, not sure how BLU works, but might not be able to learn such things.
**: Has an additional effect. And many more I can't think of now, but those are the useful ones that came to mind. You have to think outside the normal EXP mobs sometimes. Mostly because you don't exp on those mobs because of said abilities.
EDIT:

Steelshell (stoneskin)
You can't be paying much attention to those crabs your fighting if you think that stoneskin is of any use. It blocks, typically, about 20-50 damage. It's a joke. Clearly Crabs have **** for MND.
EDIT2: posted a more complete listing
here.
