Would also say there's a difference between getting something to 99 and it being endgame playable, too. Overall, there's a rampant disconnect on virtually any game forum about what "everybody" does or can do, generally erring more toward the hardcore end of the spectrum. The likely reality is the people playing less than 10 hours a week are probably only going to have one or two 99s here and likely heavily focusing on one due to JP/CP nowadays. If you're not fortunate to have a good LS, your ceiling of progression is also both lowered and slowed (i.e. You're probably not doing Delve or Escha NMs).
Abyssea era progression was arguably more a result of excess. Wanted specific seals from an NM? Well, RNG being what it was, you could easily get enough seals for another job before you finished the ones you're after. Sometimes parties were built specifically to spread the love in this case, but it didn't always work out like that. Even then, having +2 Empy gear wasn't a guarantee you were set for a given job. Personally, I err toward favoring this style simply because not making this rare or out of reach makes more people inclined to share or not feel so defensive about chasing something specific. Unfortunately, this seems more the exception for MMOs than the norm, even though I'm observing trends here and there indicating that raids may not be the go-to exclusive endgame in the future.
