if not what else can we try? we used to play World of Warcraft and people uploaded the updates to sites like rapidshare, megaupload etc which would be perfect as we can just download that at uni.

It would still do a file check and maybe download about 10% of the files that it usually would, but works fine, at lest it has the last 3 times I've tried.

It's not a perfect install though, there might be random errors such as sfx missing so be warned.

That method should work just fine. As a previous poster said, it will force a file check but shouldn't download much of anything except the most recent crc check data for the files.

Personally I use this method myself during a reinstall. Backup the entire contents of my playonline folder to another location then install fresh from the collection 2008 dvd and simply delete the new playonline folder and copy over my backup. After a 5 minute or so file check you are back up and running.

You can also export your FinalFantasyXI key from the registry and import again after copying the backup folder. This will put your FFXI video resolution and some other settings back the way they were.

Keep in mind if you use your own folder it will contain some account login data such as your playonline ID and possibly stored passwords so make sure you remove your ID's from his playonline when you fire it up to do updates and put his information back in.

Forgot to also mention that your macros are stored in those folders so you may want to dig around and copy his USER folder from "Program Files -> PlayOnline -> SquareEnix -> FINAL FANTASY XI"

Setting up all those macros can be a real pita.
