I didn't read your entire post, it was far too long for me to read through :).
One thing XI did do right was the social side of things, most things you couldn't solo and as you said - Downtime. There was a lot of down time from seeking to waiting for something... but that was also XI's problem.
As a gamer I don't really want to spend all day not getting anything done which looking back at XI I think my game time reached 600 days? 800? I cant remember.. one thing for sure was a good portion of that was "Downtime". Not through choice, it was through Seeking... it was waiting 1 hour for an event to start.... running around looking for NMs.. running around or waiting for people who got killed through agro or invis/snk wore off. As much as I do miss some of it, I think it was too much.
One thing I like about the coming XIV expansion is the fact that it will provide new areas with new challenges that even a level 50 could easily die just to agro. BUT it's not the entire game or most high level areas.
As for Hard - Try Coil in XIV... T9 I am currently learning and I must say it's hard not to make a single mistake that could essentially wipe everyone. I think XI's comparison would be missing that one Stun that would AOE heavy on an entire Party.
