Power stat on itemsFollow

Is there a write-up somewhere that explains how the power stat works? I had assumed it is essentially a "+mana" equivalent. When spells cost 40+power per cast, what good is having a max power bonus from items of level/2+1?? That is not even one extra cast of a spell!
