Daoc hands down.

Ive played both and i will state now that if you want to get anywhere in FFXI its impossible to solo. Even if you become beast master to advance in game after lvl 50 with lvl breaks and such it will take tons of group work.

FFXI is purposefully designed to force gamers to group.

Mean while i played DAOC and took Necromancer from lvl 17-48 solo, which would be impossible in FFXI.

solo in DAoC is very possible, and rather easy for several classes.

still best to find a big population server, and get in a nice guild with a good alliance for those times when you need info, or just feel the need to group.

you will not want to solo in the rvr areas very much though. you will be fodder for the zergs, and individual groups out there.

If you don't like grouping, definitely cross FFXI off your list. The way the xp system works and the way the monsters scale up you're forced to group past the mid-teens. Beastmasters can solo at a slow pace, but I've still heard by the 60's they almost always set up a duo with another beastmaster.

DAoC, yes it's very possible to solo all the way for certain classes. Though if you want to do any of the Trials of Atlantis stuff (which is hard to get by without in RvR), you tend to need to group.

If you really like going it alone though, why not look into a game built around single player?

No it depends what job you pick. If you pick the monk you can get to level 15 with in a week depending on how much you play soloing. And when you get your advanced jobs some just sluaghter npcs and can take even matched hands down, so i would say final fantasy 11 because if you ever get tired of soloing joining a party will be very easy unlike dark age of camelot. I have never seen a ghost town in final fantasy 11 but i have seen a few in dark age of camelot.

Have you even played FFXI? Monk is easy to solo to lvl 15, i did it but then you have 15 lvls until advanced job that you cannot solo.

Also there is no NPC killing. And besides Beastmasters there isnt any jobs out there that can kill EM mobs for measly 72-100 xp/ kill. You can, i know my Paladin can at lvl 45 but its a battle that takes all my HP and MP and requires me to rest for 5 minutes afterwards.

Solo is not a viable option in FFXI like it is in DAOC, Necromancer, Cabalist, Enchanters, Bone Dancers all can solo no problem. FFXI has Beastmaster and even then you have to group to complete all mandatory quests after lvl 25.

Naw, doesn't sound like he's played FFXI past that. Even matches (yellows) start eating anyone besides beastmasters for lunch. Heck, decent challenges (blues) become impossible for most jobs. Mobs are just so singually powerful in the game and have so much hp, even in a full group you have to stick to a single mob at a time.

It's not like DAoC where it's balanced where a group is often pulling whole mob groups in order to gain xp bonuses. I mean it's common in DAoC to pull 3+ reds or even purples at a time without a sweat as long as everyone's working together. In FFXI, pulling two mobs is really really bad, though survivable if your Bard/Black Mage/Dark Knight/etc. can land their crowd control and/or people start popping their 2-hour reuse abilities. Pull three and your Black Mage better start casting Escape fast else we're looking at a wipe.

LoL,

I'm turned off on FFXI already and never even seen the Box.

Even the Druid class in Hib can solo to 50 in DAoC. Just don't expect a peeps to be over joyed to group with a Nature spec'd druid.

Each class in DAoC has a solo spec. and you can always respec at level 40 once you have a good network of DAoC friends built up. All it takes is alittle research on your part and there are tons of class guides available here to help you out.

lol, as rvr is to DAoC, grouping is to FFXI, if you don't like grouping FFXI isn't for you, but grouping is where all the fun is.

Having recently quit playing DAOC after about six months and starting up on FFXI, I'd have to say DAOC is better, although more tedious when it comes to PvE.

The conning system is much better. I don't know what it is with FFXI, but the check system is just horrible. Monsters vary wwaayy too much in strength from what I've seen. DAOC tells you what con the monster is to you as soon as you target it. It also tells you whether the mob is aggressive, neutral, or friendly. Targetting is much more simple, and when you're fighting a monster, it's a lot easier to switch to another mob if necessary. It's a better battle system in general, but as I said, very tedious. I got two of my characters up to level 50 and pretty much had my fill of PvE.

Bhodisattva's post is a little off. Necros happen to be the best PvE class in the game for solo play. Any other class, grouping is quite necessary in order to level up QUICKLY (in caps because it's an operative word..). With most tank/archer characters, you have to have someone that can give you endurance (endurance is what you use to use weapon styles..As opposed to FFXI where you can just sit there and auto-fight, if you're not using a weapon style in DAOC, you're not doing **** for damage and you're going to die in most instances.). Healers are also nice. Healing or buffing characters tend to lack the physical brunt to do their own killing (most of them can't use weapon styles), and as such will kill very slowly without some sort of help. Magic using characters can do well, especially if they're a pet class, but they tend to run out of MP quickly, and it takes a loonnggg freaking time to get your MP back in DAOC.

The actual partying system on DAOC is much better as well. You don't get kicked in the *** nearly as hard for partying and not being this super efficient well lubricated machine. Like for instance, most of the newbie parties tend to evolve by being in the same place at the same time. You might not level as fast as you were solo, but unless the XP is REALLY bad, you're probably not going to even notice a difference, plus you'll have this guy to talk to while you punch the buttons. Also, powerleveling is a lot more rampant in DAOC. I've gotten people from ~25-38 or so in a day by PLing them with a Champion.

For solo characters, Albion, you definitely want to go necro. Minstrels are good soloers too, but seriously, best character in the game for PvE is Necro, hands down. It's silly to choose something over it if you just want a PvE character. For Hibernia, Champions or Wardens tend to do best as solo artists. Wardens are verrryyy group compatible as well. Champions are the best PvE tank in the game. Light specced Mentalists can do decently as well, but it requires a lot of knowledge on how to play them correctly. For Midgard, you're probably looking at either a Bonedancer or a Spiritmaster. Bonedancers are great for solo play, but can get a little scary sometimes. You have to replace their equipment often (this depends on your spec..I'm not getting into that because there's a billion different opinions on how to spec your character). Spiritmaster pets are pretty cool, and they have something called PBAE magic that does a ton of damage, but requires you to be within melee distance of the target pretty much.

For FFXI, red mages are pretty nice when it comes to soloing, although they get expensive as hell down the line. It should be pretty easy to get one to 30 though, since they get parties a lot and for the first 20 or so levels you don't even have to party if you don't want to. I'm not promising it won't be frustrating at times, but like I said, you don't have to party if you don't want to. :-P

I've got to say though. If you don't plan on ever joining a guild or whatever in DAOC, I wouldn't bother wasting your time. PvP, the game's main selling point, is NEVER 1v1. Not any of the good stuff anyway. You're generally going to be looking at 1-3 full groups (8 - 24 people) for the fun stuff. Even most stealthers at least duo. It helps a lot to be with people who know what they're doing and you play with regularly as well.

I don't mean any disrespect to McHecker on this, but TOA is highly overrated for the most part. It's kind of the flavor of the month excuse as to why so-and-so is beating the **** out of whoever. There are a few skills that TOA can give characters that are highly useful, and some of the artifacts are good, but for the most part, it's fluff. Overall DAOC is a very balanced game. People that lose often either don't understand the dynamics of their realm's group compositions or just don't know how to work together well enough. I know in my old guild we could generally take two groups of albs or mids with just one group of our guys. It wasn't because hibs are overpowered, or we're all TOA'd out (we aren't..The guild as a whole is like ML6ish officially, or was at the time..I was ML2. :-P), or cheated (we pride ourselves on not using radar. ;)), but because we all worked together, and we were good.

Anyway..I've succeeded in making myself tired, so I'm going to quit ranting. :-P Have fun reading.

alright seriously its DAoC. I played DAoC then quit for bout 6 months. Then i played FFXI it bored me to tears. There is almost no way to solo. Now im back to DAoC and having so much fun. No idea why i left it. My lvl 34 druid cant solo greatly but this is because he is a healing class. Many tanks chanters necros can solo easy.

Hi there. Ok ive played daoc at launch and was bored, so i left to go back to EQ and others. When ffxi came out i played it too and LOVED it. BUT it is not a soloing game. do not let anyone tell you otherwise. im sure there are some areas maybe that you can solo IF you have the perfect class for it. i had a 42 whm/blm and many others and its just not possible and still enjoy the game. I only left the game because at 42 there where no english speaking people to play with anymore =( and you have to group!

now back to daoc. my friends played daoc from launch and have never quit. so recently(3 weeks ago) they convinced me to come back. and MAN am im glad they did. i have a bonedancer on percival and ive solod almost the entire way to 43. the only times i grouped was because i wanted to and could. Make sure you have at least the SI expansion, it really makes the game 1000 times better. DO NOT pass up on RvR in the battlegrounds! its what makes DAOC DAOC. for soloing you want either a Necromancer, bonedancer, or a friar. there are a TON of classes that can solo in this game easily but those are just cheap =) soloing is a cake walk with those.

in closing =) try daoc it has it all! soloing, grouping, rvr, pve, crafting, questing....all fun. there is a reason people always go back to EQ and DAOC. because they are the leaders in MMORPGs.

have fun,
dz
