Why is ToA needed in order to install Catacombs?Follow

One of the reasons I never picked up Trials of Atlantis was that I was never at the level for it to be of any use. My highest character on Merlin was a 39 Ranger but then my old guild moved to the coop server and I then stopped play. I'm looking to get back in DAoC(really enjoyed my time when I played and got used to it) but I have the original along with the SI expansion. I actually have the Gold Edition that was released. Why is ToA needed in order for Catacombs to be installed when it comes out?

Is it because the new graphics engine builds off the last one and can't be installed over the SI version? Or do they simply want to make you to buy ToA?

I can see why SI would be need for ToA since you had to go to the SI in order to get on the boat to Atlantis, no matter what realm you were on. Is it that you have to go to Atlantis in order to get to the Catacombs in the new expansion?

Or am I miss informed in needing to buy ToA in order to get the latest expansion?

Thanks.

As far as I can tell from what they have posted on the Herald, the SI engine is the only requirement - and now they are giving away the SI expansion free to people with an active account, so all 14 of the people still playing the game who have passed on the retail expansions should be fine (just kidding on the number :-))

I can tell you this. I ordered a copy of ToA online and in my lack of patience tried installing Catacombs without it. The Game does in fact run, although it nags me for my atlantis key. I do notice this, I can create a Frostalf in the catacombs generator, though I cannot go to atlantis with him. My wife tried installing the Catacombs engine with her DAoC/SI key and it refused to run at all, had to go back to the old engine.

Just an insight from an impatient individual...

If you don't have ToA installed, you won't be able to go into the ToA zones =\

You need ToA because of modifications they've done to the code, for graphics, the engine ect.

To Happyman, I am curious what version you had installed before you installed, and also you said your wife tried to install the Cat. engine. Was it the download patch engine or the full expansion? I am curious since everything official has said you have to have ToA installed to install Cat. I am asking since I am in the same boat (no pun intended) as Blue, I am in no hurry to get into ToA, but would love to use Catacombs to get there :) Thanks to any and all for answers

The graphics expansion of the catacombs engine off of the herald is very good, and they have one for both SI and TOA. I didn't know they had this, so I rushed out to buy copies of TOA for both my GF and me, and now we just ended up getting the cat engine online. I still want to get catacombs for the content, but I'm still playin around in TOA and NF. But I must say Ir eally do enjoy the updates that TOA offered as far as items and graphics!

If you do get TOA, make sure you don't make it a grind. Too many people have made it all about raiding parties to go get loot. Last time I went on one, my GF's cleric was killed when she went LD, no one would help her get back to where we were. Then when she finally got there, she was killed again and they just left her on the ground until AFTER they rolled for loot, at which point, she just released and they never noticed. Lame. Don't let it become like that for you if you get TOA.

Hmm,

I upgraded a few within the last week, this is what I noticed:

I can goto ToA, make ToA toons, I just can't use the ToA client. Since I hate the Catacombs client so much, I might just add ToA key just to avoid the Catacombs client when I do ML raids and such.

So, from what I have seen, not having ToA, but upgrading to Catacombs, all you lose os the ability to run the ToA client, which I like the most for ML raids.

I still RvR with SI.

I read somewhere else that if you have ever had TOA activated on your account, it doesn't matter if you have it installed on the computer. So my question is now, is there someone out there who never went beyond SI (with or without the cata engine patch) that installed Cata and got it to run? I am in the same boat as you guys, don't need TOA right now but want cata to play with friends..... Thanks in advance

And now an update based on my experience: Toa crashed on the second disk during install. So I just popped Cata in and once it was installed it wouldn't let me get into anything without the ToA key. I could launch the old link with just SI and it worked fine, but if I tried to launch the new one with Cata it wouldn't do anything without the key. Got lucky and got Cata for $20 and ToA for $10 at the local EB store.
