Hi Ya'll,
Looking through the chain items I noticed something, non-player crafted items are a lot rarer in chain than in any other armor type. So here I am a level 32 Thane on Midgard (pellinor) trying to figure out which is better: the level 25 (green) boots I've been wearing, or the level xx? (purple) boots given me by a friend? I don't want to wear my stuff out too fast and not have it as I level up, but I don't want to lose out on the properties of the better (and more AC) item...

Any advice?

I'd suggest you end up selling off the green items, find something that's yellow, or orange to you, and just wait for the purple item to be closer to your level, especially as a backup tank class, as you might end up with / having to get agro.
