I always thought you did because they are related quests, but I have been wrong before...not often though!!!
Yes, you have to do all of the quests in the series starting at level 7. They tell a story over the series of quests.
Two handed and polearm users have to spec those lines for styles, and slash, thrust or crush to improve (lessen) varience in their damage and I think base damage.

You have to level slash up as well as your 2h to tighten your damage variance.
Starting from level 7 you get a chain of "Traveller's Way" quests, they lead you into your epic, then here's the kick for ya. It depends on which realm your in whether or not you have to train in 2hs to use a two handed blade. If you're in Midgard, you don't, slash covers all your basic skills to cut with a sword.
If you're a pansy Alb, you need to spec 2 hand.
If you're one of the elite and proud Hibernians, you need Large Weapons.
