DAoC is set up to play both individual and group encounters, and has more than enough content to do both equally well. You can hone your skills as an individual player, as you wander the different locations looking for monsters to kill for experience, or you can take on larger and stronger monster mobs with a group, gaining experience and leveling faster as you search for bigger things to fight. (player versus environment encounters or PVE)

You can also choose to participate in what is called 'rvr' or realm vs realm combat in the battlegrounds fighting against 0ther player characters from different realms that are your enemies. (RVR) Dark age of Camelot has one of the best RVR systems when it comes to realm warfare.
