I was just wondering if anyone who played 1.0 on a laptop could give me their specs (RAM, CPU, GPU etc) and relative gameplay experience (Graphical Settings, FPS, slowdowns).
My girlfriend is in dire need of a new gaming rig if we have hopes of playing FFXIV together. Her decent laptop that she played FFXI and the FFXIV beta on had a major hardware catastrophe a year after she got it. Then the laptop a friend from FFXI sent her got stolen when her apartment got broken into (along with her TV, PS3, games and the earrings I bought her for her birthday >.>). She is currently using my 5-6 year old work laptop which scored under 250 in the 1.0 benchmark.
I was planning on building her a desktop similar to mine, but I don't believe she would have the room in her current living quarters. I've been looking at prebuilt laptops and just as I assumed they are grossly overpriced compared to the hardware contained within. Even on Newegg I've noticed how their "gaming" laptops seem to use very underpowered GPUs and sticks of 4gb and 2gb memory in a dual channel system <.<. I guess I may look into building a laptop, but it sounds like it would be more hassle than it's worth.

I'd go with ASUS republic of gamers. I got mine when the 500 series was in, so I have a GTX 560M with 3 GBs of VRAM. 16 GIGs of RAM, 18 inch screen, i7 cpu with turbo boost all for 1500 at the time.
If you were to get a macbook or Alienware with those specs.... You'd expect to to pay 2-3k. For 1400 they give you integrated gpus, with a smaller screen.

As for performance, I scored a 4500 on 720p maximum and around 3000 1080p maximum. I expect you'd get better performance if you got the 680m version. This laptop is on my piano for music and video purposes. When hurricane sandy hit and I went to stay by my parents after having lost power, I was grateful to have the laptop to play on lol. It was my first time using it. I was able to run 1080p with everything max except ambien occlusion, in windowed mode. (1.23)

This would be the current one. The 200 dollar price bump is for the larger screen. It is QUITE noticeable. When I look at the smaller laptops they look so tiny now lol. The 15 inch one is really hard to beat spec/price.
I have to mention though, that the mouse pad is very sensitive. To the point that I find it annoying. I think it may just be me though. You can turn of the pad though and just use a usb mouse and you're ok! Oh and I would just unplug the battery and use it plugged in for longer sessions so you don't ruin your battery's lifespan. I wouldn't expect long playtime with this monster. You'll be lucky to get 2 hours running in turbo mode. Maybe one hour.

I just got a laptop off CyberPowerPC. this is what I got. It ran the benchmark on maximum without changing any options and scored 3700. On high, it got to 5000. Honestly, I am happy with this. With how much I travel for family stuff, laptop is just a better option for me, and I can't expect to get desktop quality graphics off of a laptop without spending a lot more than this.

This engine is very optimized. I bookmarked that for future lol. I'm in agreement, just hitting maximum gets you slowdowns where you don't need. Some people just make monster computers and negate that issue though :D. I'm doing zero upgrades on my pc. It ran 1.0 on max it'll handle this just fine. Getting x2 680s this time around doesn't seem worth it.
I've ordered a few Sager based laptops from Xoticpc. www.xoticpc.com / www.sagernotebook.com (xoticpc is a reseller that does some skinning mods). Sagers are amazing high-quality built machines. I've seen problems with some ASUS laptops as far as dealing with heat issues. I have a 4-year old Sager laptop with a NVidia GTX-M 280 and I can run the benchmark at 1080p on medium settings and score a playable framerate. I played 1.0 on it as well and it ran fine. It certainly isn't a desktop, but will provide a pretty good experience for a mobile machine.

My wife's laptop CPU hits 75c and the GPU apparently hits 100-110c. The laptop gets hot. In relation my desktop hits 60 (35% load) and GPU hits 65 (99% load) when playing.

The newer Asus has the fans facing the back. My lap is what I use hooked up to the logitech wireless keyboard mouse pad combo. I keep it on my 4th hdmi port for my TV and is on 24/7 (I treat it like a damn desk top) I can say I have no heat issues. I'm only familiar with Republic of Gamers though, the person above previously showed an Asus for 599. That, I have no experience with. The higher spec your laptop, the more heat it's going to produce. (Usually)

You need better cooling then, I don't break 60 on mine, but it does start to sound like an airport when all the fans kick on high
The gamming ASUS laptops witht he big screen have no heat problems. If you look at the back, they have 2 big fans that makes the laptop look like is going to take off at any moment. I love the look of the laptop but it is big and heavy, but it is a gamming laptop. If you get one, you will need to order a carrying bag from them since there are not many that will fit the 18" ASUS G series laptops.

Odd. I did this on my GF's laptop with all the settings cranked as low as possible and didn't anywhere near that.

Everyone pretty much confirmed my thoughts/fears with the prices of your laptops >.<. Honestly I was hoping to get/build her something in the $600-800 range, but it looks like that won't be possible unless I build a desktop. I did some guesstimating and we might be able to squeeze a desk into her room of we move some stuff around. Then we just need to figure out of we can easily get an Ethernet cable in there and prevent animals from messing with it XD.
I just built my gaming rig at the new year for $1035.

I'm sure I can run a similar build for her but get a cheaper case, and a HDD instead of a SSD, and downgrade the GPU from a 7870 to a 7850 or something. She doesn't care about being able to run it on max settings or anything so I should be able to work out something in the next couple months.
Edit: Plus she will be using this 19inch 1440x900 Hannspree (Who? I kno rite?) monitor I bought for $20 off my friend's mom so she won't even be running the game anywhere near 1920x1080. (I'll still need to buy a new monitor and all the ASUS love has confirmed which I plan on buying. :D)
