I know that... but it's not polite to say so. You're the guy at the second wedding whispering to the groom that he spent to much money on Cake 2.0.

Yes, this is what I mean. You won't relive the first time your fighting mobs and some friendly person comes up to you and asks if you need help. You wont get the same feeling the first time you fight a dragon solo for a quest. The reason why I cant enjoy any other MMOs is because the second time is just not as ejoyable as the first.

While there is some truth in your words i don't agree. Every time i start an MMO and planning to be committed to it, its because i got excited over it. My first truly commitment came with wow. Now i had played other ones but wow was the first to blow my mind. After i did everything i could in wow and got bored the next one to truly get me excited was Eve online. I will never forget the first time i managed to get a new ship or the first time i killed someone in a 1vs1. What i am trying to say here is YES i will feel the same excitement about ARR if the game gives me what i am looking for in an MMO game.

This antagonism feels random and out-of-place... Of course we won't get the same feeling. The virginity has already been taken.

I doubt many FFXI vets really think 14 will be as magical as their first mmo (ffxi). You can still enjoy new mmos but it will never ever be the same as your first mmo, you will never recapture the magic.

My first few weeks on FFXI were amazing, I mean utterly amazing and I was completely lost in this amazing world. South gustaberg was awe inspiring, later finding north gustaberg which gave me great and long lasting enjoyment to explore. Finding a tunnel area filled with quadravs which genuinly felt like finding somethign hidden and special, or the first trip to Valc dunes. I've played lots of MMOs with much more detailed and wonderful worlds than FFXI and it's still just not the same, you become jaded and see the game as just that, you know how it all works and it's just not special or awe inspiring anymore. You can enjoy the games but you treat them as you treated your last mmo when you were grinding levels or gear. it's not an experience it's just carrying off where you left off in another world. You see amazing things in new mmos and you look at them and comment how great it all looks, then carry on grinding quests or mobs. Your first mmo you get lost in the world and it's not about just grinding to cap or getting gear, you never really get that feeling again.

Your first mmo is like your first love, the first time you have ice cream, the first day of school or college or whatever. You will never have that first time feeling again, so if you're expecting that you are going to be dissapointed.

Guess I'm just desensitized from being exposed to too much Internets so Kachi's comments about orgasms don't seem to phase me much; "just another day cruising the information super highway", I tell myself. Now if we're reliving the nostalgic days of FFXI I'll say the day that I got my very first cape as a level 7 Red Mage. I toss it on, wait a couple seconds and turn to my roommate (who was a self-proclaimed guru of 3 months) and ask, "does it show on the character?". He says, "no, but you now have +1 more defense than you had before!". Groovy! I decided to challenge the strongest mob I could find and got my butt handed to me. As a result I de-leveled and couldn't wear my spiffy cape.

Sure it wont (most likely) give you that "OMG AMAZING, ???? in my pants..!" feeling you had the first time you tried FFXI (Or any other MMO), but just like sex; it stills feels pretty good and exciting. I see my previous MMOs like ex-girlfriends, sure I had sex with them, but that doesnt mean that my new girlfriend a ka FF14 wont be JUST AS exciting, and if I'm lucky, perhaps even more!!! :D It might be even more amazing than the first time! :D

...oh right and here is a kitty cat to Raise my rating :3 (\___/)

I dunno, the first time I beat Galaga on the Atari 7800 was pretty damn awesome. I was six or seven at the time so I'm not sure how orgasmic it was, though.

When we were kids, my dad purchased an old Asteroids arcade machine. Unfortunately, we never realized that it was not a game that you can beat. God, I don't even know what my high score was. Like most games from my era, I didn't figure the score was the point of the game. I thought it was just some meaningless number that went up until you got to the end. Smiley: frown

Hmm not necessarily. Stepping into XI was an amazing experience, that's true, but when I stepped into Ragnarok Online it was also that same amazing experience from the atmospheric music to the cute anime isometric-psuedo 3D design,2 years laters I discovered Maplestory with my cousin and stepping into it was also an amazing experience due to the fact it was a side scrolling MMORPG, something you never seen before. It was fun, cute and also had some pretty amazing music in places Of course you had to spend money so for the full experience, so I never played it for too long however that "one time amazing feeling" works quite differently for MMORPGs. So while I get what you're saying, it's not fully true that people were basically jaded after already having an amazing experience...it's more:

"Well I stepped into WoW, did my ****, now I'm moving on....hey this MMO looks cool.."
"Well I stepped into Rift, the game felt just like WoW so I couldn't really get into it because I've already burnt myself out on WoW...hey this MMO looks cool!"
"Well I stepped into Knight Online and it felt exacty the same even though it's older than Rift..hmmm..let's try..."
"Well I stepped into Space Cowboy and yet, it still feels exactly the same..even though I'm flying a ship and driving a tank...lets keep looking.."
"Guild Wars 2 **** yea! Now this is what I'm talking about! -1 month later- well I'm bored as **** now, this feels pretty routine and not even interesting routine..lets try"
"SWTOR..Star Wars by Bioware, how can they **** this up? Feels exactly the same as WoW with worse PvP..lovely.."

When you look at it like that, then you look at FFXIV, logically you'd assume to get that amazing feel you got from XI because XI was an amazingly designed FF game in an MMORPG setting. It wasn't a perfect game, but you think Final Fantasy Online, you'll jet everything right back to XI not because it may or may not have been your first MMORPG, but because it was an actually well designed and great MMORPG by Squaresoft/Enix that stayed true to the Final Fantasy name and you obviously wanted to feel that with FFXIV. You get jaded quickly when you play numerous MMORPGs that all feel and play the same, but you still get that "amazing feeling" when you step into MMORPGs that try to do more than just fit the mold to make money.

This might be a personal feeling. Lots of games are initially impressive, but become dull later on. Then the other side of the coin would be that some games are initially dull, but make up for it later on. For example, when I first played SWTOR during closed beta, I was really excited that so much was going on around me, but by the time the game officially released, I was beyond bored with it. Every time you got to a new planet, it was even more dull than the last, plus, there was TONS of backtracking. WoW, on the other hand, I played initially for about a month in 2005, I was a Dwarf, and anyone who remembers Dun Murough before cata can tell you just how dull questing was initially. When I came back to the game in 2009, I got a chance to play on Azuremist Isle and I saw how much of the game's presentation had improved. From that point on, the game sort of fed me cool stuff in small doses, so rather than getting everything rammed down your throat in the beginning, I got a little as I went along, which generally kept me a bit more interesting.

XI was a unique case, because the atmostphere was a bit different. Initially, your starting city can be intimidating because you have no idea where anything is, plus there are arbitrary limits as to what you can do since airships are closed off to you and crafting guilds are more or less useless to new players. Going out into the world was just as intimidating too, because you essentially went in blind, and the areas were so vast, nothing about progressing your dood was obvious.

I think all of the games offer something unique in terms of experience, but since the majority of 14 fans are migrants from 11, they almost expect or feel entitled to a similar experience. I think that the OP is right, however, your first will have the most profound affect on you as an individual, and will usually end up being your basis for comparison.
