I was waiting for a new FF MMO for years and years, but by the time it finally comes I find myself looking for a gameplay experience which is expressly not based around menial tasks that involve no real thought (ie. the vast majority of quests, monster grinding) and more something that has the depth to be stimulating.
I loved FFXI, but looking back, the things I liked about it were the lore/characters, the storyline, the immersive world to explore. Unfortunately, though I did it anyway, the vast majority of my time spent in the game (ie. the XP/LP/gear grind) was just not fun for me, simply because there was no mental challenge. Okay, maybe it was a little fun, but there's surely a limit to how many times one can level up or get a new piece of gear and still be thrilled. At the current point of my life I feel I'm too busy to spend time on a game where most of it is this kind of zero challenge filler, so I'm not sure what to think anymore... I can't be the only person to feel like this.
tl;dr give me a big budget sandbox MMO where I can make a kind of cute character (EVE gets an F here)

I feel exactly the same, myself. I want to like XIV, but I think best case scenario will be that the leveling is quick and I can experience most of the game in a month and then leave it like I did with GW2. I just don't even have the time to throw into an MMO in the midst of my own projects, at least not one that doesn't inspire me or challenge any of my views about game design.
There's always that MMO with the FFT gameplay to look forward to, at least.
