The Materia is made from gear that have been spirt bound to you, you convert that into materia but you will lose the item, now you need carbonized materia to meld it all togather with the gear, this im still working on that ,the game kinda explained to me that the dark matter you can gather has a chance of being carbonized materia when gather it, idk it didn really make sense to me and couldn find any, i will have to try again next weekend. Thats all i know so far, materia quest is at lvl 19.

I found some carbonized matter in Middle La Noscea. The description said it was used to attach materia. Dark matter is a different thing. It's used to repair gear.

Oh nice, yeah i read it wrong lol, did you find it gathering? or off a monster? i was lookin for a hot min and couldt find anything!

I found it while mining -- it was in a rocky outcrop in the northern part of the zone. I was level 16 miner, and I think I had about a 65% gather chance. There was also level 3 dark matter.

Cool Thanks! when beta is back up next weekend ill be heading over that way! got a lvl 14 miner pretty close to lvl 15,

Turn stealth on so the Wild Jackals don't snack on you too.

I still haven't touched crafting & gathering yet. I'll probably want to get into that soon. At least for the materia system and doing my own repairs. Tired of seeing all those empty materia slots on my gear.

I picked up Weaving(lvl16), Mining/Botany(lvl 5). Before I logged out the last thing I made was the highest level recipe in my weaver book and it was still extremely easy. Leves and first time craft bonuses made leveling a breeze, even faster than my Conjurer actually. All I got out of it for wearing was crafting/gathering gear. Most of the gear I picked up through questing was either better or identical so far.

Making anything once you have the recipe unlocked is easy, between Ready Hand and the durability refill. It's the HQ gear that people go for. HQ Gear stats are basically equivalent to items several levels higher, so they will always be better than quest and vendor gear.

Maybe I missed it in the thread, but everyone keeps mentioning crystals. I noticed that all I had available on miner were shards. Do crystals come from higher level nodes? The ones right around uldah didn't drop them.

Also, what do people think about gathering classes? I have to say I got pretty bored of just running in a tiny circle for 30 minutes to get mining from 1-5. Does it get better at higher levels with more abilities to use and more space between nodes?

I did Weaving (lvl 20) and Botany (lvl 16) this past weekend. The materia melding quest doesn't unlock until level 20, and you can't get the grade 1 carbonized matter until I had botany to at least level 16, because the matter is in level 20 trees. I found them right outside Aleport near Limsa Lominsa. I was able to collect lightning, wind, water, ice and earth shards from botany at that level. I do not recall ever seeing fire shards. Weaving uses a TON of lightning shards. One to make the thread, one to make the cloth, one to make the actual item. The best place to get them is east of camp black brush outside Ul'duh. The level 15 vegetation is among the cactuars that are on the hillside.

I would usually stop once an hour, go there and farm up 150+ lightning shards then head back to the weaver's guild to continue. AS far as materia goes, weavers can only attach materia to items that are made, or could be made with weaving. You also can't attach materia to items that are higher level than you are. IE; as a level 20 weaver, I couldn't attach materia into my THM's level 21 gear.

Hope this info is helpful :)

It's the crystal shards that are used in crafting. We're just not calling them shards.

It's also worth noting that each piece of gear indicates what level crafter is necessary to meld materia to the gear, so there is no guesswork involved (luckily). It's intuitive as well, like Mathisyn described: the only crafters capable of melding materia to gear are those capable of making the gear itself (with some exceptions, I'm sure, but I haven't seen those yet).

This.

My fingers are not interested in typing out "shards/crystals/clusters" every time I say crystals.

However, actual elemental Crystals start showing up at ~level 30 gathering nodes. Have not seen Clusters yet.

I'm going to have to amend my previous statement. Just re-got Botanist back up to 16 and... the Carbonized Matter and Dark Matter have been moved to Western La Noscea. The 4 tree circle that had them and the Wind/Ice/Earth shards is gone as well. Still not the same zone as the Mining ones though.

As far as Materia and Tradeskills go, does this mean you have to have a craft leveled to a certain point to attach materia to gear? For instance, If i want to attach materia to a level 20 sword i would need to be a level 20 blacksmith to be able to do so? Can you attach materia to other peoples' gear? This system seems backwards from most MMOs and "jewelcrafting". It seems like everyone would level their crafts just to make use of their sockets. Which in turn seems like it would either make crafting much less lucrative or completly alienate more casual players that don't want to waste their time farming 10000 crystals and synthing 5000 thread, 2500 cloth, and 1000 items just so their gear can compete.

Maybe I am missing something. A bit more clarification on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

If you examine another player, you'll noticed two greyed out buttons that say "Affix Materia" and "Repair." They don't seem to be working at the moment, but I assume that's how a tradeskiller can work on someone else's gear.

Woot :D thanks for the clarification Rava you are the man/woman XD. That is actually pretty awesome. It leaves plenty of room for profit as a craftsman.

I had another question that I would appreciate it if you answered about materia. I think I recall hearing something about having to combine materia in 1.0, is that still present in ARR? Is that how you get X Materia II/III/IV/V? Or is the level of the materia based on the level of the gear? Level 10 = Rank 1 materia, 20 = 2 etc?.

Or are both true? Thanks for the info on everything, I can't wait to pass it on to my friends and others that wish to know :D.

I wasn't playing 1.0 when Materia was released, and I don't have any 20+ gear to convert, so I can't confirm anything about Materia yet. I have not seen anything about combining materia yet, but that could easily fall into the "not working yet" category.

I tried out leatherworking for the sole purpose of materia melding for my lvl 20 PUG.

Up until lvl 15 LTW all the materials can be purchased at the guild merchant but soon after that I struggle alot to find the mats. There was a need for metals, minerals, animal hide etc. Most of the stuff cannot be purchased at npcs. I really enjoyed it.

I did finally get LTW to lvl 19 but then I found out painfully that the catalyst required to meld could only be found by miners and botanist with none on the markets. Also, the crafter's level has to be higher than the gear they are trying to meld materia on.

The market is going to be needed big time. There is so much cross over in materials. I don't think anyone would want to level all the necessary crafts. If you're starting up at the launch I highly suggest getting together with a varied group of crafters and gatherers or else you'll have a hard time raising your level.

I actually planned on doing this in phase 4. I was going to make a LS where all of the HARDCORE ZAM crafters could mingle and possibly help one another out with cross craft materials. I will probably make a post about it in the coming days and see who all is going to be a hardcore crafter at launch. I was wanting it to just be for those that are going to take their respective craft to 50 before doing much battle content.

It could also greatly benefit everyone else since we would be able to produce higher quality gear at mats cost. Not to mention free (at least in my case) materia melds for gear. Tips are always appreciated however :D

Oh and cheaper repairs... probably at the cost of dark matter.
