Some Ideas for FishingFollow

Obviously there is troubling news about fishing and while we don't know any absolutes yet, the general sense we are getting from Yoshi can't be interpreted in any way other than it's going casual. On this thread I am hoping for constructive criticism towards the future of XIV fishing...

With that said, I hope to come up with some ways we can suggest on the Beta forums to make fishing still worth while (in the event out suspicions are confirmed .)

My first idea is this:

It's obvious they want to move fishing away from the RMT trade because they are collecting all day and then flooding the market with craft items/crystals/fish etc. To combat this, why not offer a wide range of gear/items/etc that can be gained only my catching fish or other objects that are obtained via fishing. Then with those fish or other items, you turn them into an NPC which give you access to a wide array of RARE/EX items... (a la Lu Shangs except this time, it can't be traded.)

This accomplishes two major goals.

A. It keeps fishing a vitale part of the game

B. It eliminates the incentive for fish bots

In order to accomplish this however, they must also make whatever is caught out of the water Rare/Ex. To accomplish this, I was thinking you have some item in the water (similar to the boots and pots that were caught in XI) that in this instance are traded to the NPC. In XIV as an example we call these items "Sea Relics" or whatever they want to call them... They can even add lore behind them, for example, they are relics of the old world lost to the see during the last apocalypse. Now some antique guild is out to collect them, in exchange for rewards... Of course these are rare, and should only be caught maybe 1/30 casts (or whatever their balancing team decides.)

Anyways here is my first idea... please let me know what you think! Once I refine this idea a bit more I'm hoping we can collectively put our voices together on the beta forums to save/improve the trade we love :)

I think it's great that you put the time in to come up with a constructive post about this. However, I really think it will be much more beneficial to wait and actually see what fishing is like when it's playable. Since we don't really know anything about the actual system, other than that it will discourage RMT and be more relaxed, I'm not sure we can really think of ways to improve it yet. I'd say maybe hold off on this, and revisit it in open beta when fishing goes live and we can see what it's like. You do have some interesting ideas though.

I agree with everything you said... I mostly made the post so I have something ready to go if the fishing system looks less than desirable upon release. I like to plan preemptively in everything I do.

I am mostly hoping to hear the communities thoughts so that we can come up with our idea of the "perfect fishing system."

I do understand though, that it's criticizing something that doesn't even exist yet... However we do have information to work with.

We know thus far that:

A. The .dat files show the near elimination of fish in crafts

B. Yoshi has heavily hinted at fishing be a "for-fun" mostly type job.

I didn't even really see it as criticizing, just you taking a stab at how you'd like to see the system implemented. There's nothing wrong with that; it's actually commendable. We will know soon enough what it's like, and I think this could be a useful tool once we do have a clear understanding how the system works. As to point B, I'm hoping that the "for-fun" aspect of the class is fun enough to compensate for it's lack of interrelation with the other classes. If they do it right, it could still be an excellent standalone class that is engaging and entertaining.

Heck, I'd love to see regional fishing competitions with prizes at the end, maybe even some leves where you fish in certain areas, pull up a monster, and have to defeat it on a different class. Or how about if they had "Deep-sea fishing tours" that left from LL that went all over the place and you could reel in massive fish-beasts... maybe even as part of a team. All that could be done while still keeping the RMT out and making it a more casual, for-fun class.

I could see the viability of fishing if it went to a ra/ex, bound type system.

The one big area for debate would be the quality and usefulness of the items you would trade fish in for. Too overpowered, and fishing becomes mandatory for everyone. Underwhelming, and no one would fish except the diehards. Ultimately, the balancing of the rewards might be more work than implementing the system overall.

I do like the idea, however. Very inventive.

The best bet would be to make the items similar in strength to the company gear sets. That way if you don't want to fish, you're not really missing out. On the other hand, if you do fish, you get some pretty nice options to choose from.

On the whole, I think this would be a very viable idea to implement.

Thanks for the replies everyone... feel free to add your own ideas.

I love the idea you suggested in the last paragraph Bartel. I think that would be absolutely amazing... They could be like 20 minute events or something like that!
