Starting a new character on a Legacy serverFollow

#1 Jul 21 2013 at 12:35 PM Rating: Default
A have a legacy account, but my char developed only to level 20 Conj. and 23 Weaver. I quit out of frustration for high failure rate on crafting.
No I worry to start new char or even continue with old one on a server where there will be number of people with 50’s level crafters and millions of gil.
Do you think my fears are founded or baseless?

You can keep your legacy account and start out on a new server. Only 1.0 characters are locked onto legacy servers. Your account is free to make new avatars wherever you want.

Yea you can do both keep that character and just make a new one on a different server. If you haven't played the beta then starting over might be the good thing to do since it is a nice experience, and quick leveling to get you to 20+ again especially with a CNJ and instant queues for Duty Finder.

Even if you continue with your old character, you will be fine. Very few Legacy players have more than a couple Classes/Jobs at 50, leaving them several others to work on, not to mention the new Classes and Jobs that no one has yet. Gil wise, the market was "balanced" by the devs and all Legacy characters had their gil reduced down to 10% of what they had before. For example, if you had 1,000,000 gil before ARR, your character will have only 100,000 gil when you log in to ARR.

I don't think you will be at a disadvantage if you were to keep your old character.

I'd be more worried about having people to actually group with while leveling. During Beta Phase 3, I logged onto one of my old 1.0 characters on Hyperion and there was NO ONE (that's not exaggerating, literally no one) in Ul'Dah or anywhere near.

That's why they implemented the Duty Finder, which groups you with players across ALL servers. You will not be left behind due to not being able to run a Dungeon.

You'll be ok on a Legacy server. You should fear that hardcore grinder who hits the cap first on a new server, and has a monopoly on the market for a few weeks. Or a rarity of materials and crystals for crafting that make them expensive at first.

Really wish people would stop feeling inferior. There will be plenty of people available to craft for you should you ever need something made. Since there are many to chose from, you'll get a competitive price.

Ultimately, it's up to you if you want to start off feeling "equal" with everyone, and not stress that X person has more than you. Seeing as you didn't devote too much time on your character, you won't be losing out on much. All in all your fear is baseless (imho) and is something you're going to have to work on. You should do whatever makes you feel most comfortable. Good luck!~

I rolled on Hyperion as well and found it to be the exact opposite as you described. Lots of people everywhere doing all levels of content available. It will be interesting to see what actually happens after the game launches, with all the doom n' gloom surrounding the whole Legacy thing.

I think it's interesting that you both went on the same server and had opposite experiences concerning grouping. It sends mixed messages and confuses people/creates fears.

I can say this is likely your only chance to level with such a large group starting from level 1 with no help from anyone high level. If that interests you in the slightest, don't miss the opportunity. It will never come around again.

This is the eternal debate for someone in your position - legacy server or non-legacy server. Truth is nobody knows what will happen - I say go with your gut feeling and stick with it - sounds abrupt but good advice.

Well, yeah, there's the Duty Finder, but I really wouldn't consider it 'fun' being in a wasteland, just queuing up for dungeons to get social contact.

This is interesting. Maybe I just logged onto my char at a bad time then? I considered that, but just seemed improbable as there was no one. Not a just a few people, no one. Oh well, I'll still have those characters on those servers at release, so I'll be able to check it out again. I was just pointing it out to help anyone in case that would be an issue for them.

Sorry but this is a complete lie, Hyperion was heaving with people at every single camp, even when I was out at the more obscure locations I bumped into people! The only way no-one was visible would of been if you were still on the tutorial mission ;)

I worry about the legacy servers as well. I hope they allow a free transfer off when they allow it in six months.

A large number of legacy players could have rolled on new servers for the beta to play the new lowbie content and possibly recruit new players to their servers. Newer servers will probably have higher populations, but I think that there will be plenty of players on the legacy servers considering that there are fewer of them. I would wait until the open beta and then see how things are looking. I'm sure there are plenty of 1.0 players that didn't bother with closed beta and will be hopping on to see how the game is.

Also, I'm sure the population on legacy servers will be more stable than on fresh servers. There will be a huge influx of new players and then a drop off after a couple months, regardless of how well the game does. Legacy servers probably won't feel this quite as much as the new servers will. A lot of the new players will be friends of legacy players and less likely to drop the game early on.

Personally I'm rolling on a fresh server. I was unable to play 1.0 until a month or so after servers went down and I've never played an MMO at its launch. I would love to play with the high concentration of committed legacy players on the legacy servers, but I want to experience what it is like being there from the beginning on a server. That coupled with all of the exploits and bugs that allowed a portion of legacy players to quickly level all jobs and amass max gil with minimal effort makes playing on a fresh server a no-brainer.

I know a lot of people are saying that the economy will be balanced on legacy servers, but I don't think that it will be, not for a while at least. Even with a 10% reduction in the amount of gil everyone possesses, that still leaves plenty of gil to those that would potentially corner the market on certain goods. Sure you might not have to pay 100x the price of some lowbie item, but you would still have to pay more than it's "value". In WoW I've seen players with large amounts of Gold be able to dictate the prices of items to insane extents.

I guess I could be wrong to some extent and underestimating the amount of players that will be in the position to input items into the economy. I suppose that with a large amount of players having every craft capped it would be pretty easy to find LS/FC friends that could make you gear for reasonable prices. The choice could simply boil down to something such as that, and for a lot of people I'm sure it does. I know if I had any friends on legacy I probably would have rolled there.

It's not polite to call someone a liar unless you have something to back it up. And since there is absolutely no way you can prove what I experienced, don't you think it would have been better to call it a misunderstanding rather than a complete lie? I mean, I can definitely see the benefits one could get by fabricating something like that, but I tend to take the high road regardless.

I created a character on Hyperion and Gridania was packed, tons of people running around. On the flip side, when I logged on to my legacy on Ridill the cities were ghost towns. It may be that since Ridill is going JP there just wasn't anyone on the times I logged on.

Yeah, I was only on for about 5-10 minutes or so. I didn't go anywhere except Ul'Dah and it's outlying areas. Got tired of looking for people, so logged out and went back on my new character on Diabolos. Like I said, could be that I just came on at a bad time when everyone was on a posse ride or something.

i recommend you start on fresh new server with other people, economy will be new and not tainted, everyone will be level 1 which is exciting in itself and it really feels like brand new game if you take it in that way.

the person that said only a handful of people were all capped that is a lie or false information, at least on my server alone more than 50% of population have almost all class maxed if not all after all the abuse with power leveling/etc that was allowed and used + abused.

You have to get through the opening tutorial in order to have other people appear.

Thanks for being respectful about it and not calling me a liar, Gnu. Appreciated. Thinking back now, I'm not sure I did go through the whole tutorial. I thought you couldn't even leave the city until you finished it, but I could be wrong. With that said, I'd still recommend a new server if you're starting fresh. While the level sync is intact, I can hardly see too many high levels focusing on running low level dungeons. They'll probably be more focused on higher level content (and the gear upgrades they provide), which could cause a lack of participants for lower level content. Just my take on it.

EDIT: Disregard the above. Forgot that the Duty Finder was cross server for a second there. Still though, if you do, I still wouldn't look forward to having an abundance of players to do content with outside of Duty Finder content. Here's to you having fun, no matter which you choose.

You can't go outside during the tutorial quest. You can barely look in the wrong direction without some NPC calling you back. You probably were just off hours, or maybe logged back in after a server crash or something. Personally, all the servers I tested (I made a LOT of new chars) seemed packed.

Look at my sig... I played that much and i only have about 3 million gil (which will become 300k)

This does not mean that people don't have MILLIONS (a guy in my LS has about 200 mil...) but this guy is an outlier in a 50-ish member ls. He is a minority in a population of minorities.

OT but related, did they do the gil conversion in P3? How about the obsolete items to gil? Just wondering because I don't remember how much I had when I quit.

Yep, they did... ;_;

Most of our gear is obsolete too. AF > Materia items now since the materia was all turned into dust and not tradeable until P4.

Additionally, they nerfed the heck out of Darklight armor and any items like White Ravens that are unobtainable. Really, the only advantage legacy has is levels.
